when you see Monty Panesar listed as a possible BBC sportsman of the year and yet he can't get into the team ahead of Giles

Fletcher you stupid twat!

What I find ridiculous is the "panel" which advises Fletcher on who to select for the team. The "panel" consists of Trescothic (say no more), Flintoff (obviously), Strauss (not that experienced), Collingwood (still a Test rookie) and fucking Gerraint Jones :shake:

No wonder Chris Read can't get into the team.

Should only be the captain from the current team. Absolute crap that he calls on other players to help advise on the squad.

I mean, why not use some of the old hands that can't play anymore, or ex-captains. Seems bizarre that players like Jones, Collingwood and Strauss would be anywhere near an advisory board. I mean, what real test experience have they got?

The obvious question is this

Will any of these players drop themselves if required? :shake:

I think the selectors should have the final say of which Fletcher is one. They should take the opinion of the captain in writing and then discuss it between themselves.
Anyone can pick a bloody squad, these selectors are getting off lightly. THey ough to be picking the team.

It's only cricket that has selection by majority, it should just be the coach/managers job to select the team, the capt to capt on the field, endof.

I think the captain should have a say but not a veto. He should be able to say who he wants in his team but it should be left to the selectors to make the decision.

I don't think the other players should have any say in it whatsoever.

Agree to an extent, and I would go one step further, IMO, there will always be a bias if the capt has a say in who is selected, close friends would be hard to drop, take that responsibility away from any playing member is the best way.

Selecters should pick a squad, the manager selects the team from the squad for the particular match, the capt catpains on the field on the day.

You could get a player who the captain doesn't gel with or who is obnoxious to the captain. It's different to football as in cricket your captain makes crucial selection decisions on the field such as bowlers and field placings.

I dont think its the worst thing to have players as part of the committee, but this should be the captain and at worst the vice captain, the rest shouldb t be involved. Especially as in this case, one cant seem to handle playing the game at all and the other is not assured of his place in the team.

Panesar should be playing, as he has the ability to win matches, its not a popularity contest. so it doesnt matter if whoever it is doesnt gel with the others as long as he plays well that is the bottom line

We had this problem a few years ago, which is why the coach and captain no longer have the final say in who plays.

Monty should be in the team no questions asked!

Read scored more runs in the weekend game than Jones has all tour probably.

This is where personal opinion comes into it instead of focusing on the players current form.

Something wrong with English sport when you get such a poor list of candidates for Sports Personality.

Good news for English cricket!

Adil Rashid has been called up to the England A squad to tour Bangladesh. This 18 year old lad is a Yorkshire leg spinner who broke into the first team towards the end of last season.
I think he could be the answer to our spin problems in this country if his talent is properly nurtured.

Here's his profile:
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/244497.html

He can bat a bit too, 114 against India U19 plus 8 for 157 in the same match.
6 wickets on debut against Warwickshire.

He just needs to add a bit more variation to his bowling but there's plaenty of time for that. He's got 2 years ahead of him to perfect a sharp turning perfectly pitched leg spinner, then he can work on variations.

There are a lot of very good young players around at the moment, Bell, Cook, S. Broad, Rashid.

Totally different class. salisbury had no consistency whatsoever basically because he was a medium pacer who decided late in his development that he was a poor medium pacer who could turn his wrist over. So he took up leg spin.
He was never the real deal.
Rashid RIPS it across the wicket. He has so much potential and in the right hands he will be a world class spinner. The sooner he gets a central contract the better for England. I'm not sure I trust Yorkshire with his development.
You will see it Dan ;)

It is a shame indeed. Maybe with Warney retiring England should sign him up as a bowling coach :haha:

I forcast he will be playing for England before the next Ashes Test :jaw:

Well they couldn't stop him if he wanted to but there's no money on earth that could tempt Warne to help England IMO :haha:

The good thing about Adil being at Yorkshire is he'll get plenty of bowling in. Their squad is decimated for the coming season. Hopefully he'll stay injury free.

so whats the deal with you and cricket? You done much in the game?

Not much. I'm a bowler and played a bit at a local level for 3 seasons. Now I just play for my cricket club down the road at a very relaxed level :) I just enjoy the game, there's so much to it plus more respect for officials and decisions, more sportsmanship and a good social side to the game.
Doesn't match football for excitement very often but it's a happy contrast :)

I've been learning leg spin in the office though
