Juve ends their interest in Mascherano.

Benitez cleared for Argentine - if he wants him

    Jan 3 2007

By Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

JUVENTUS have ended their interest in West Ham United's Javier Mascherano - leaving the path clear for Liverpool to move for the midfielder.

But Rafael Benitez has not yet decided whether to press ahead with his attempts to sign the £6million-rated Argentina international.

Mascherano is seeking a way out of Upton Park and has made just seven appearances, playing only six minutes in the past two months.

Representatives of the 22-year-old recently held talks with Italian outfit Juventus after being ruled out of new West Ham manager Alan Curbishley's plans, but the Serie B side have now ended negotiations.

Benitez remains keen on Mascherano but, with Bolo Zenden closing on a return to fitness and Momo Sissoko targeting a February comeback, the Spaniard will soon have ample midfield resources.

There is also the significant obstacle of whoever signs Mascherano having to request special dispensation from FIFA, with regulations preventing the midfielder from playing for another club this season after also appearing for Brazilian team Corinthians.

Mascherano signed a four-year contract with West Ham on transfer deadline day in August, but he and compatriot Carlos Tevez have failed to impress.

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender James Smith has joined Scottish First Division side Ross County on loan until the end of the season.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

        From The Mirror.

WEST HAM now look likely to hold on to Javier Mascherano until the end of the season after Juventus today confirmed they had pulled out of a deal for the Argentine international.

Juve's sporting director Alessio Secco confirmed that the Italian club had ended its interest in the World Cup star after it proved too complicated to complete a deal for him due to the player being owned by investment group MSI.

"That [Mascherano deal] will not be possible," Secco explained to La Stampa.

"We have pursued this until the day the market opened, but we have had to renounce because of the complicated contract situation."

Settling a deal for him to come in the summer would be nice.

FOr the price thats been mentioned, i'd love to see him signed, i'd also like to see Tevez singed.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

            * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

If this bloke is so good, why don't West Ham use him?

I can't understand when the media says that Tevez and Mascherano have been two bad signings. Mascherano hasn't been given a fair chance and Tevez has played as a right winger.

Tevez is one of the best central strikers in the World IMO. It's just to play him on the right.

Attitude of Tevez could possibly be questioned, but i agree, with the right handling, he could be a world class addition to a side. Ferguson for example would have him doing a Rooney role and give him total freedom if he had him.

Probably because he signed for them at the wrong time. He need time to settle in and West Ham couldn't afford to give him that time after starting the season in a very bad way.

But surly if these two are "World Class" players, they need time to settle in the team? (like Bellamy did)

West Ham are fecked and I don't think they have nothing to lose by giving the lads 10 games in the first team.

Actually thats a good comparism. Rooney is stronger and with better shooting, but still, there is something that reminds me of Rooney in Tevez.
