How did GH do in the first few years?

Against the top clubs? United, Arsenal and...would you say Chelsea? Werent under Roman's rule back then, so i suppose it'd be Leeds.

I ask because obviously Rafa hasnt got the measure of these sides yet, and i remember Houllier had a few failed attempts at Man Utd certainly, before sussing it and recording 5 on the bounce against them.

Sometimes, for a foreign coach especially, it takes some failures before you get to grips with what's required.

Anyone remember how Ged got on first few seasons in these clashes?

he did ok against arsenal and chelsea although chelsea weren't the power that they are now. It took a couple of seasons to get to grips with the mancs. I don't agree that he hasn't got to grips with them though, my belief is that this season they have been better than us. Last season we were better then the mancs in the league but got undone in the last minute, and we outplayed them in the cup. We hammered Arsenal at home but could not finish until late on We have also got the better of Chelsea a couple of times, and in 90minutes in cup games they have yet to beat us (6 games).

Yes his record isn't very good against the top sides, but we've beaten all three of them under Benitez at one time or another.

Houllier had an excellent record against the big clubs, it was our record against the other teams that let him down.

This is how I remember Houllier against the bigger clubs! Prior to his arrival United had the wood on us, but I remember he had a good run against them. One other team that we were losing to prior to his arrival (not a big team, but a big game) was Everton. He had a record against them that was better than any previous manager.

Having said that it was against the lesser teams such as Bradford etc where we came undone.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

Poor against United at first then a good run unbeaten before ending 50 50.Think it was 50 50 with the Arse.I seem to remember nearly always being beat at stamford bridge with a few draws and home wins against them and think we did quite well against the blue****e
