ROBBIE FOWLER was today handed the role as 'mentor' for Liverpool's new boys.

Rafa Benitez sees his experienced striker proving an inspirational figure on and off the pitch in the season ahead.

The Anfield boss says Fowler has a presence at the club which will be channelled to positive effect on recruits such as Craig Bellamy and Jermaine Pennant.

And with the Reds' 'new' number nine already showing glimpses of his class in the opening pre-season games, the wisdom of keeping the 31-year-old for another season is already evident.

"When we signed Craig Bellamy and Jermaine Pennant, both mentioned how Robbie was a player they loved watching for Liverpool when they were younger," said Benitez. "He is someone they look up to.

"With Robbie, we have a player at the club who is already a legend for the supporters and some of the players, and that can be a positive influence, particularly on the youngsters we have here.

"They look up to Robbie and admire him and he will enjoy helping them as much as possible."

Fowler has looked sharp in the first two friendlies of the pre-season, turning creator for both Bellamy and Craig Lindfield to hit the goal trail.

He'll be hoping to maintain his form in tomorrow's clash with Kaiserslautern, in a game where Jermaine Pennant is expected to make his debut.

"Robbie has played very good games so far," said Benitez.

"His movement and work for his team-mates have been really good. He is still trying really hard in training and working with Pako (Ayesteran). He knows there is still work to be done on his fitness, but we're happy with him."

Liverpool's English World Cup contingent, including Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Peter Crouch, will be given more days training before being considered for selection.

Apparently he has been brilliant with the youngsters who have just come in from the academy - telling them they're good palyers and advising them as to what to do as well as making them feel part of the Melwood set up.

A class act.

You know I really had my doubts when the news filtered through that we were going to sign him...I really couldn't understand it...Not that I doubted his abilites before but because he was so ineffective while playing at City that I honestly didn't think it would work out.

But I underestimated his love and passion for the club. A true red. I hope he stays on for many years...

I was over the moon when he came back, he scored important goals and showed his passion for the club. He wont be a regular starter next season but his main role is off the pitch. He's the example for the younger lads in the dressing rom. Rafa understood that very quickly and deservedly offered him a contract.
Legend.

I'll never forget what most forums were like when we signed him. I doubt there is a player in the world that could of created so much hype. Not even Henry or Ronaldinho IMO would of created so much buzz around the place.

Expect him to play the Morientes 'in the hole' role this year, more so than the lethal goal-hanger he used to be, except better than 'Nando ever did it.

There was plenty of tears shed that day - not be I might add, I'm a man's man.

I hope Robbie hangs around Liverpool for a very long time. I can think of no better striker coach!

You are so right. My wife won't let me forget the night he re-signed. It is indeliably etched :)

Best bit of business we've done in years.

That's the great thing about him though ryan. If his starting position is within 25 yds of goal then he has a chance.
So the fact that he is in the hole vs leading line don't seem to make much difference to me.

Other than the fact that his hole play ( :) ) in the friendlies has been Riquelemesque.

I reckon the feeling is pretty much mutual though as well. Depending on how well he does this season, and how disciplined he is with his fitness (big if, I know) I think Fowler may possibly have a further contract extension offered.... The guy has a lot to offer still, if he keeps himself fit.

I they move him into the hole, he could have at least another couple of years yet.

Hardly any point in saying anybody's been 'Riquelmesque' though is there, when all they've done is play against Crewe and Wrexham?

Robbie has someone's Mentor? :haha:

I would have been worried about that a few seasons ago, But Robbie has matured since leaving Liverpool. I cant think of a better person than him to teach Bellamy and Pennant about what it really means to play for Liverpool
