Arsenal 'Reserves' - the biggest con in football

And so Arsenal's 'kids and reserves' have made it to the Carling Cup Final. Well done them.

So just who is in this 'reserve' side then?

Certainly not World Cup winner Gilberto Silva? Not Champions League, World Cup and European Championships star Tomas Rosicky? Or Kolo Toure, World Cup player and a man who's made over 200 appearances for Arsenal?

What about £7m striker Emmanuel Adebayor? First team defender Phillipe Senderos? And the man, well boy, that Arsene Wenger considered was good enough to pay £12m for, Theo Walcott. Not to mention £4m buys Denilson and Diaby. And although he was injured last night, the man who has almost single handedly got them to the final, Julio Baptista, who Real Madrid paid a rather large £22m for just 18 months ago.

So basically, it's the first team minus Henry and Lehmann. Hardly the stiffs is it?

Yet we've had to put up with jokes about how young this side is, none more so than when they walloped us in that freak 6-3 win, scoring with virtually every shot they had.

Could we get to the final without using Gerrard and Reina? Well, it would depend if Dudek was playing, but I reckon we could. We got to the semis playing reserves, proper reserves, two years ago, beating a full strength Spurs at White Hart Lane on the way. Pity poor Spurs.

The over-hyping of this Arsenal side is yet another example of London bias. How else can you explain the bollocks that we've had to listen to saying that we have to be more like them when we are above them in the league and our manager took just 11 months to do something that theirs hasn't in 11 years.

It seems as though we are copying Wenger's blueprint by signing quality young players, a raft of them have come in in the past few weeks. With Padelli, Leto, Insua, Brouwer, Ajdarevic and Duran joining the likes of El Zhar and Roque, Rafa should be getting some sort of award for creating an international youth hostel at the academy.

No doubt we all hope that the system pays off, but holding Wenger and this Arsenal side up as shining beacons of hope that we all have to copy? Give me a break.
Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.

The fact remains that the average age of the side last night was 22, and it has been even younger in previous games.

Great post, I think the same thing really pisses me off the media with there London bias. The thing is the team may have been young but they are all regulars basically with the exeption of Traore, Denilson and Allidiere (however you spell it).
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

I think most of the press have basically been excited by the potential in that team. Add Fabregas into the equation and you can see exactly what they are talking about. It's not a reserve team in the sense that none of them play but they are an exceptionally young team, with little experience and they can still beat PL opposition. Do we have any young players at the club who look as good as the people you mention or the depth of young players blooded in the PL, the answer is a big no.

It has taken Wenger many years to get to the stage where he can spend half his budget each year on players for the future. But he is there now and he seems to have a top system of coaches and scouts and it is definitely a model we should aspire to emulate.

But even Aliadiere has played over 60 games for them. He must be about 30 now!

Quality post, in my eyes it doesn't diminish what Wenger is trying to achieve at Arsenal, however, it's the false reporting that gets annoying.

Fact is, Wenger is using considerable resources buying up, very young, very gifted footballers - something which other managers are starting to cotton on to.

Spot on. Are they quite a young team? Yes. Reserve or youth team? No.

I wish dickhead Mancs on trains would remember that before they rant on about 'Arznulls yoof teem' beating our 'first team'.

We shouldn't conceed 6 against any team. But nearly all of those players would get in the first XI of most sides in the PL. We conceded 6 because Dudek was playing like a clown and the defence in front of him was hopelessly disorganised.
