Centre from the right flank hyypia pulled to the LB position and beaten to easily.

Paletta didn't attack the cross too well.

Oh, folks its only pre-season and not much of a line up so leave the razor blades in the cupboard.

Bob

Interesting we're playing three at the back. Just in btw.

Would explain hyypia's positioning.

Reina, Paletta, Hyypia, Riise,

and nearly three, but for Riena.

Playing three at the back, obviously not working well so far :(

Zenden Speedy are positives. Pennant OK.

30mins gones.

He is playing right back. Hyypia and Hobbs in the middle. Riise on the left.

It's more like a 4-5-1 right now...

We have no shape.

Hyypia is annoying me - normally a rock he's having a mare. He's ball chasing and his postioning is dreadful. Looks like he has no confidence in those around him so he's trying to cover them, and in doing so is getting dragged out of position.

He should be helping the likes of hobbs out rather than do the work for him.

Bellamy is up front on his own

Zendens just had a shot blocked.

Bob
01-08-06, 04:46 PM
Hyypia playing RW now FFS (good cross mind).

Rafa get this sorted - looks like a schools match. I know its more of a fitness exercise, but its starting to get on my tits.

Bob
01-08-06, 04:48 PM
definetily four at the back - with hyypia being a free role defender.

We're getting raped in our full back positions and Grasshoppers are craftily pinging balls into those positions.

Ended the half with a dodgy set piece.

I know its Pre-Season but we're not playing well but at least getting a bit of fitness. Grasshopper look very fit and you can tell they are a few games into their season.

Is Xabi injured?

some +ves:

bellamy, pennant, gonzales, anderson & momo all looking sharp
when we get moves going forward we have width & pace
hobbs is having a much better game..glad rafa threw him back in from the start
hopefully in the 2nd half we`ll be wearing studs

some neutrals:

zenden despite rafa`s assertion that he can play defensive midfield
is no momo sissoko, just hasn`t got as much physical prescence
maybe we should buy vierra as a back up for momo in case he gets injured ;)
paletta`s back pass was pure pre-season & just lazy
..he`ll kick balls like that out of play in any meaningful game

some -ves:

our shape in the 1st half left us chasing the game, but rafa has little option if he`s wanting to give the youngsters a chance, rest the world cup plyers & protect the injured

Bob

Agree with most of that.

Particulary our shape, though it looks like rafa has resolved that at half time.
Zenden has been ok, though looks terrible in the tackle.
Paletta should know that you never pass across the back - like i said before schoolboy stuff.

It's more a fitness exercise (people must remember this) identified by the fact that they're wearing heart monitors.

Crouch just had a turn and shot - good effort, though didn't trouble the keeper too much.

Bob
01-08-06, 05:11 PM
Kromkamp - paletta, Crouch - speedy, and Traore for Anderson

Bob
01-08-06, 05:19 PM
Gerrard on bellamy off.

Back to 4-5-1 perhaps?

Since half time we've been 442 and looked much better.

Gerrard just put a deflected shot wide.

Bob
01-08-06, 05:22 PM
Reina all over the place yet again - reina rushing out.

Crikey Carra better stay fit. (replaced hyypia)

Momo has been man of the match so far, with bellamy not far off (looks very sharp)

Perhaps anderson isn't up for the first team - looked a bit hapless in the first half.

Bob
01-08-06, 05:23 PM
gerrard playing up front and we look dangerous in attack

Bob
01-08-06, 05:27 PM
crouch nice finish - yard offside. Centre from gerrard

Bob
01-08-06, 05:32 PM
Riise diagonal and first time volley from Gerrard (this guy looks world class ;) ).

Turning it on a bit Crouch denied by a great save - put in by gerrard.

Barnes (legend) is sooo annoying to listen to.

For those pennant doubters - he looks very useful and efficient. Keeps the ball well and not afraid to take on a man.

obviously the subsitutes have made us stronger. We were a shambles in the first. Players not knowing their posititions - Momo was the attacking/support striker.

The back looked to start off as a three, but i suspect it was just Riise bombing forward. Paletta was woeful.

Can't read too much into the game though.

New signings have been impressive.

Would worry about rafa playing bellamy up front although bellamy surprised me by his movement - nearly always got in the right position.

Would worry about rafa playing Zenden in this Alonso role alongside momo against the bigger teams. Gerrard is more effective here.

I'll temper that by saying gerrard and bellamy up front could be an exciting pairing.

Bob
01-08-06, 05:46 PM
gerrard misses a one on one.

Expunge my last comment about gerrard up front.

Crouch has played well so far :BRENDAN: ;)

Good training exercise for bolo, riise Momo Looks exceptionally sharp
the new players, bellamy and pennant look like they are settling into the team.
Positionally in the first half It was looking like school boy football, 3 or 4 players chasing the ball.
The defence was run ragged and was a shambles, but hey its all training :)

Grasshoppers were a good side Played very very well and substituted 12 players through the game
swapping all positions including the goalie.
torn our defence to pieces at times through some excellent skills

Bob
01-08-06, 06:10 PM
Reina - 6 - Erratic at times
Paletta - 5 - Looks the part, not here though ;)
Hyypia - 6 - Good in the tackle. Shambles positionally - he'll be back to his best with more games + better company.
Riise - 6 - Bombed forward too much for my liking, leaving me thinking we had three at the back!! Better in Midfield second half.
Pennant - 7 - Looking forward to more of pennant. Not afraid to be beat a man, high work rate.
Hobbs - 6 - A much needed boost to his confidence after the kaisersulten game.
Sissoko - 8 - MOM. Boundless energy. Showed yet again he's not a DM but a box to box player, shame he was deployed in an advanced role in the first half - missed his cover at the back.
Zenden - 6 - Perhaps a bit harsh as i'm used to seeing Alonso in this role. May provide cover for the CM role given this performance.
Gonzalez - 6 - Needs a bit more confidence in his play, subbed at half time.
Anderson - 5 - Much potential, and one for the future. Hoped he learned something today. Didn't seem to know where he was supposed to play.
Bellamy - 8 - I predicted (boldly) he'd get 25+ goals a season in all comps this season. With the movement he showed today he'll certainly get plenty of chances.

Mentionable subs:
Gerrard - 8 - You know the score by now. Would have been MOM if he'd been on for longer. Captain Reliable!
Carra - 7 - Solid, hobbs would have learnt more from Carra.
Crouch - 7 - Good touches and link up play. Still want to see another striker at the club.
Troare - 6 - Dependable, brought much needed strength to the LB role - Riise pushed forward.

Don't worry this wont be a regular joint chaps ;)

300 posts... this rate wont stay for much longer.

We were caught out too often with the diagonal ball. The back line first half were embarrassing.

You're right though - this is training, nothing more. Big boys looked sharp and nearly there. That's good enough for me.

Oh, and no injuries - result!!

Grasshoppers are a few games into their season and have started really well. Our first team would piss on them though.

I love him - after all he went through last season.

Will be a legend at this club at the end of his career. Our midfield is outstanding with his energy.

I don't mind spending a little over the odds for players like Pennant if we continue to get bargains like this.

Bit of a nothing game - didn't look solid at the back, but hey, it wasn't our normal settled defence so I ain't worried.

We looked ok going forward, Pennant needed to sort out his studs, the amount of times he lost his footing was frustrating. Bellamy looked pretty good, although he wasn't clinical in the couple of chances he snatched at.
Momo, very good again, Zenden is tidy, but he did get over run by the opposition.

Gerrard looked different class when he came on. Awesome. If anything his stock is even higher - I think the opposition will be quaking in their boots when they see him leading our team out.

crouchino looked outstanding today. Great first touch and shot.

Agreed, he appeared to be absolutely oozing confidence.

Thought Momo was outstanding too. His passing looked a little more incisive and even a few tricks and flicks came off, but most impressive (as usual) was his phenomenal engine and desire. The bloke is a midfield monster. Couldn't believe Digger's naivety in commentary when he declared Momo a "holding midfielder". He's a destroyer, but he seems to almost have a free role - i.e. "go and be destructive wherever you see fit".

A legend in the making, possibly.

I didn't see the game chaps but from the audio comm it sounded like Pennant and Bellamy linked up well. Thoughts?

FowlerLeftFoot
02-08-06, 02:40 AM
A few points.

MoM - Pennant and Momo
Pennant looks like a bargain at 6.7M! He beats defenders easily, and accurate in his crossing. But need to get a new pair of boots tho, he is slipping all over the place.
Momo looks solid yet again, no one can take the ball off him, he is just so good!

Paul Anderson is not ready for the big time. He has got potential but he is not ready yet.

Our defence seriously lack pace, exposed many times by grasshoppers!

Mark Gonzales - Am not sure whether he is too anxious or what, but from what i am seeing, he is as nervous as Anderson when he gets the ball, and doesnt seem to be able to control the ball well. Early days yet, probably.

Riise looks to be in good shape and consistently performing up to expectation.

FowlerLeftFoot
02-08-06, 02:41 AM
Crouch looks good as well, sublime ball control, just lacking a bit of power in his shots.

Pity he couldn't turn that "confidence" into a goal.

Rich
02-08-06, 11:35 AM
My concern yesterday was that Gonzalez didn't track back when we lost the ball, meaning increasing amounts of pressure on Riise - hopefully the coaching staff are working closely with him to make sure he picks up this side to his game.

Rich

This annoys me somewhat - he didn't have sublime skills, good yes, sublime no! Ronaldinho has sublime skills, as does any Brazilian.

Because Crouch is tall people are amazed that he has a good touch - this is a ridiculous point of view. There are loads of tall people that have a good touch.
