Anyone ever been? I've often watched it on tv but really want to go to see the real thing. Will probably have to drag my youngest son with me as I can't see anyone else in this house wanting to go.

I thought I might watch a touring company in Birmingham or somewhere first before heading off to the ROH.

I love going to the ballet. So much better live than on tv. Best to start off with something traditional. I try and go whenever there is a ballet company in town. My personal favourite is Romeo and Juliet. Can get expensive once you get hooked !!

I would love to go to the opera...see if it grows on me like it did Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

It can be really good sometimes, but going to a good opera tops it everytime. I love a good opera and Danielle on here would be another to ask about the same as I know she has good taste in them.

Listening to one on cd can never compare to actually going to one.

I'd love to go to an opera, but my GF is unsure as she was put off by the ones she saw when lived in Russia. I'd also like to go and see Ballet, but I haven't got the time at the moment.

You should bring her to one the first chance you get.

La Bohème
Les Troyens
Tatyana
Matlide di Shabran

Would be four that I love, although Andrea Chenier is one I have on repeat at the moment.

You are based in Wales Matt? On 17th of Febuary, Khovanshchina is on at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. It is played very often in Russia though, so that may put your gf off, as she may have seen a version of it before, but this is being directed by David Pountney, so it should be very well done.

I've been to the opera a few times and quite enjoyed it although the plots are ludicrous so far.

I've never tried ballet but I'd like to give it a go. OK then, Mums, I'll go with you if you like. :D :handshake:

There is a show in Leeds also, but not sure what is on and on what date. Will try to find out for you though.

Jaco_Pastorious

Got it. Probably no good to you, due to how close it is to the Killers date.

It is on at the Grand Theatre in Leeds, on the 16th Febuary. Orfeo is the opera being performed there.

The killers gig is on the 17th but I can't afford the costs of going to both Manchester and Leeds consecutively, will it be in Liverpool at all?

There are normaly a few places in London with shows each month, as to whether or not they will be good shows is another story. Remind me about it closer the time and I will have a sniff around to see what is on and who is conducting/performing.

A man in his 40s or 50s sidled up to me outside Fopp on Friday afternoon. Very shiftily he said:

"Hello..........there is a Post Office (pointing)....er.........um, do you know where Gay Street is? Can you tell me how to get to Gay Street?"

I laughed out loud. "Gay? Gay Street?". "Yes", he said. My first thought was "Jules?", but I refrained from uttering it as the homosexual Asian man clearly wouldn't have got the joke.

So very true!

I find that most people are put off due to the thinking that they won't be able to understand, however most (if not all) foreign language operas will have surtitles. These are like subtitles you see on foreign movies, except they run along the top of the stage on an lcd type screen.

As for the Ballet, definitely go if you get the opportunity. Maybe go and see something well known the first time, like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or a A Midsummer Night's Dream. You can always do a bit of reading before hand so you know the story line and can enjoy the performance rather than trying to interpret it as you go.

I'd suggest the same with the opera, find a production of a well known opera, which if you are going to a smaller regional opera company wont be difficult as they would be unlikely to be showcasing something obscure, and read about it before hand. It helps you relax and enjoy the show more.

Opera, and ballet, don't necessarily have to be old and stuffy, there is a vibrant community of composers and choreographers out there producing not only new works, but also reworking the classics into something more modern. Baz Lurhman (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge) turned Puccini's La Boheme into an award winning theatre production.

Go with an open mind and you'll surprise yourself as to how much you enjoy it.
