View Full Version : Public Ignorance

I was at one of those research focus groups last night observing the public behind one of those glass screens (I can see you but you can't see me:crackoff: )

Amazed at the public understanding (or lack of) of environmental issues.

One woman in the 25-35 year old group actually asked......."when is global warming? When is that due to start?" :haha: :shake: :sigh: :grr:

Despite this being the current hot issue in the media and in goverment we have a long way to go in educating people about global warming.

Another gem for you....

"Carbon emmissions??? Isn't that something to do with your MOT?"

Dear oh dear oh dear......yes I know that is a section on your car's MOT but in the context of the rest of the discussion, that really should never have been mentioned.

Left feeling astounded at the lack of public awareness of the biggest issues this planet has to face.

Fact is the majority of people don't really care - and that's is why so little is really achieved.

It's my job.

As for Mat, I wouldn't wipe my boots on him. (That's a joke - I don't know who he is. I would almost certainly have done a better job though. :crackoff:)

Oh right I know of them.

So I'd guess you were in Southgate or Gloucester Place.

What do you do?

would have prefered to be in Glaocester Place.

I work in Financial Services as an Analyst....yawn

I've done loads of groups in their facility in Southgate - it's a pretty good one though maybe not as convenient.

Really? Why were you there then and what was the reason for doing it?

It's amazing the gaps in some people's knowledge but it's always really interesting I think and nearly everyone has something useful to add in one way or another (even it is just to remind us how ignorant some people are!).

Consumer research :crackoff:

I've been to a couple of these things now and you're right, just because they don't know something, that isn't necessarily a bad result, it is simply reflecting the general populous' opinions and views.

I run such groups at the consumer research agency I work at, and there are a lot of ignorants out there. Imagine how the people that never say yes to participate in such groups are...
It is an eyeopener though, even if it is depressing.
People are concerned about what is closest to them, their family and job.
For many, it stops there.

I actually really rate this sort of research, just joshing with ya!

I myself have only done live groups in Norway yet, but some of my colleagues have done it in other countries. But usually we only observe when in foreign countries and we hire some local moderator to do the actual group.
We do work with a lot of international clients, so we are all over the place.

What we are doing more of now is interactive panels and online focus groups through our web-platform. Handy stuff that isn't limited by distance. Right now I am working on a project for an international food company. We have 4 interactive panels in 4 countries. Quite interesting.

Anyway... I digress...:)

Neil Young
17-02-07, 04:43 PM
Ah yes. I've done some globetrotting, watching local moderators - I've also done the local moderating on global projects.

I'm doing a bit more ethnographic stuff at the moment, virtually the opposite to online groups. Getting closer to respondents, spending time with them, etc. I'm trying to encourage clients to do the same but obviously it's hard for them to justify (to themselves) spending the time even though it's well worth it I think.

Ah, we also do the ethnographic stuff but as you say, it is more expensive and thus harder to get the clients to agree upon...so unfortunately it is more rare.

One thing, do you find it difficult to justify to yourself what you are a part of when doing consumer and market research, or have you become to grown up and pragmatic? :)

I'm torn on it. On the one hand we're feeding consumerism; on the other we're a conduit for the views of "ordinary people" so their real needs/wants can be met more closely.

It depends - there's some stuff I don't do, some I do with reservations and some I think is truly worthwhile. I'm also doing more social stuff these days which is often more valuable and, sadly, always less profitable.

And you?

Pretty much the same.
I don't think it helps the ordinary consumer much though, so I sort of justify it to myself in terms of pragmatic reasons, this is what I know and do well, and I need a job. Hence, I might have a harder task of convincing myself that this is an ok thing to be a part of. I don't know.
