Liverpool relieved after Dynamo agree to play host
By James Ducker

MACCABI HAIFA, the Israeli club, have approached Dynamo Kiev about the prospect of staging their Champions League third round qualifying tie against Liverpool in Ukraine.

The final decision will rest with Uefa, European football’s governing body, but after Dynamo agreed in principal to Haifa’s request, it appears certain that Liverpool will be spared a trip to war-affected Israel. Uefa is expected to confirm the decision on Monday.

The Lobanovsky Stadium has a capacity of only 16,900, but although Liverpool may push for the game — due to be played on August 22 or 23 — to be held at a bigger venue, the Merseyside club are likely to accept any ruling that ensures the safety of their players, staff and supporters is not compromised.

Haifa had been keen to play the game in Tel Aviv and Itzhak Menachem, the president of the Israeli FA, has accused Uefa of bowing to pressure from Europe’s top clubs to switch venues.

“I was approached by people from the Israeli club and also Israel’s ambassador in Ukraine, Naomi Ben-Ami, who asked if it would be possible to play the game in Kiev,” Igor Surkis, the Dynamo president, said.

“I gave my provisional consent and said that security during the match would be guaranteed. The Ukrainian football federation have already been informed about our initial agreement, as any final decisions over the staging of the game must be taken by them and Uefa.”

There was more good news for Liverpool yesterday after it emerged that Newcastle United were planning talks with Empoli over the signing of Francesco Tavano, the striker, a move that could complicate their attempts to sign Dirk Kuyt, the Feyenoord and Holland forward.

Liverpool are also interested in Kuyt, although their main competition may yet come from Manchester United, who have earmarked the Dutchman as a replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, another Liverpool target, has appealed to Uefa to release him from his contract with PAOK, the Greek club.

The 20-year-old striker is understood to have impressed Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, during a trial but PAOK’s refusal to release him has sparked a bitter war of words and prompted the player to approach Uefa.

Good news.

On the Greek, lets hope he'll be worth the trouble. :grr:

All good in Crinklewood Jamo.

Weekend starts here, and all that jazz.

Have a rather irritating semi-blister on the left side (as you look down at it) on the big toe of my right foot, which is causing a bit of irritation in my tight shoes. Aside from that, pretty good.

You anything to report?

Only squeezed in a couple of hours sleep last night, the family are away (in Spain) and I'm going through a 'workshy' phase the moment, so it's all about watching neighbours twice a day, shop sandwiches and afternoon wanks.

Am currently drinking my third (blue) powerade of the day.

Sorry to hear about the blister.

Blue kicks the arse out of the manky orange one every day of the week. I guzzled two after pre-season training last night.

Enjoy your wanking mate.

It certainly does - Blue powerade:rock:'s

It's the first drink in all my years of football that I actually find easy to get down you during or after a game, I feel it rehydrates very quickly, better than that lucozade malarky

Agreed,

I can neck four or five after heavy exercise, no probs.

In my local co-op they're £1.02, lucozade is 99p. You ?

Did it about a month ago. I was embarassingly bad. I'd been boozing the night before, and even managed to squeeze in a quickie with the missus half an hour before training, which left me rather drained.

A far cry from my Univeristy days, when I broke the Uni football team bleep test record.

What about Cadbury's Fredo's? I had the shock of my life the other week when my local Tesco had put the price up from a nice 10p to a wallet busting 16p.

That's an amazing 60% inflation.... :D

How much for a 'DoubleDecker' round your way Jamo?

I'm quite partial to a bit of that chunky nougat-on-biscuit combo...

Where I play 5 a side twice a week, they're 80p in this crazy vending machine. You put your money, select you drink, then out of nowhere this mad robotic arm reaches out, grabs your drink and drops it onto a chute which leads to this bottled size hole where you drink pops out.

Or 'Secret' bars?

The ones that came on the wee cardboard-tray. They rocked.

It's still quite a hike to Kiev.

I remember Rafa saying a couple of season's ago that he didn't fancy playing in eastern europe because the long journeys really took a lot out of the teams preparations. Also a 4-5hr flight mid-week may have a negative effect on our weekend premiership fixture..... though I suppose it's better than playing in a war zone.

A war zone that is *also* 4-5 hours flight away.

Not a tricky choice
