We brits are very quick to call our own players world class aren't we? Lampturd has been called this for a couple of seasons now and we all know he is far from that. We've even called Stevie world class in the past when in fact he was VERY good - but not world class (*ducks for cover*).
IMO Only Gerrard and Rooney are world class in this country at the moment.

Anyway - I just saw the thread about Zlatan Ibrahimovic and I immediately thought 'talented - but overrated'. So - in your opinion - which foreign player is called world class - but you think he's overrated?

I've gone first with Zlatan. Who else?

Couldn't agree more regarding Ibrahimovic. Grossly overrated.

As for Rooney (sorry, I realise he's not foreign) - IMO he still remains 'potentially world class'. Until he does the business in a major final or contributes towards winning a major trophy, then he's just potential.

Back with the foreigners, hows this for starters...

Totti (the single most overrated player on the planet)
Camoranesi
Seedorf
Cristiano Ronaldo

Over the few last years I would give my vote to Christian Vieri

Ronaldinho. ;)

I know he is a fantastic player and is capable of magic. But I do believe his ability has been largely over-inflated because of his image.

In fact i've probably seen him have more poor games then good.

Well lets just say that if you replaced Gerrard with Ronaldinho 2 seasons ago then we wouldn't of won the European Cup for a 5th time. ;)

I agree...Gerrard is the best player in the world for us and I wouldn't swap him for Ronaldinho.

The buck-toothed Brazilian is still an absolutely sensational footballer.

Oh I agree, it was probably the wrong place to put him in the "Most overrated foreigner" thread but I still feel he is overhyped to this status as the worlds best because of his image when in fact IMO Henry has been the best player in the world over the last few years.

I just dont think he is AS good as he is made to be.

Totti omg, another one. I have never seen this guy consistently do anything good except consistently be a filthy scumbag.

Guys like him only get hype because of their image and from teenagers viewing too many compilations.

Plus I think he should be banned for life anyway. Scum of the highest order.

Zlatan!!! At his best, he's world class. Too bad it's once a season. HATE him!!! Totti is also VERY overrated. HATE him too!!

Rich
05-08-06, 12:10 AM
Adriano is a good shout - more left footed than Riise if that is possible!!!

Totti is pretty good, nothing more. Seedorf has always been over-rated.
Lampard - obviously.

Trezeguet

Trezeguet

:handshake:

We'll probably get inundated with his goalscoring stats now (which are admittedly impressive) but his play has never impressed me. Even his finishing is usually erratic when I watch him play.

I wish he was foreign!

Same here - people used to take the piss at work, because I was so against Lampard starting for England at the World Cup. I used to get so wound up!!! :crackoff:

Thank god, I can go back to not even considering how to fit him in next to Gerrard.

G_Man
05-08-06, 12:18 AM
Trezeguet? Well Trezeguet actually backs his status up by sticking the ball in the net with unerring regularity. To call him over-rated is like saying Ian Rush wasn't a good finisher.

Totti is ridiculously over-rated.
I think Drogba and Essien are over-rated. Essien is just a hacker, Drogba is a very poor finisher.
Ballack is another one. He's OK but he's no Xabi Alonso.

Rich
05-08-06, 12:20 AM
Ok, he's not foreign but Rio 'Gangsta' Ferdinand. How the hell is he classed as an international defender!

G_Man

Woodgate would be one of my most over-rated Englishmen. ONE half decent season for Leeds and Real Madrid think he worth over 13 million :o

I still think Trezeguet is overrated despite what the stats say.

I still love that Newcastle spent £8.5million on Boumsong!

Rich

Babayaro is totally over-rated too!!! Another classic Souness signing!

John Terry. A very good defender but nothing more.

Alex Del Piero...

IMO more overated than Totti! He hasnt done anything of note for 8 seasons. He had one really good season back in 96 and since then has been living of that season. He is woeful for Italia aswell!:whatever:
At least Totti produces some really good games for Roma. Del Piero just hits nice free kicks. Thats it.

Seedorf is another overated player IMO, he gives the ball away far too much, doesnt tackle....i really dont see why people rate him.

Del Piero did use to be god like though. He has come back to an acceptale level for a top player in the last year or so but is now nothing special.

he was god like for one season....he has been slightly above average for the last 7 seasons.
I may be biased because i have mates that love Juventus...therefore ive hated Del Piero since he came onto the scene.:p

When Edmundo (who may well have been the most the most arrogant footballer I can remember) compares a player to himself and can't quite bring himself to say he is better than them you know they have to be good.

However I have to say most of the time I have seen him in the last 5 years he has looked nothing but average.

I used to think Roberto Carlos was fantastic - about 4/5 years ago. He's been living on his past glories for a while though.

First player that came into my mind when i saw this thread title.

Never saw what all the fuss was about.

The Italian David Backham.

Throw Raul into the mix aswell.

Over-rated? How about that £20m player Denilson?

Tries more step overs than C.Ronaldo.

Raul was not over rated mate! He was a world class player, he has gone of the boil a fair bit.....but from 98-2003 he was class!

Have to agree - at times Raul was one of, if not, the best player in Europe. Fantastic ability and work ethic.

Sadly well past his best now.

People are very unfair on Beckham. Just because the media built him up beyond football doesn't affect his playing ability.

He has been outstanding for Real in the last few years and in the past he has been for both England and Man Utd. In the last couple of years he has failed to turn it on for England, but then neither has Gerrard very often.

He is a great passer/set piece taker/cross/shooter.

After that there is nothing else in his locker.

people go on as if he has every attribute in the book!

Thats a bit harsh matey....he has the spanish national record for goals scored;) He didnt play that well at World Cups, but he was always dynamite during qualifying.

Nothing else in his locker maybe, but the assets you mention (passing, crossing, shooting and set-pieces) are a pretty handy set of attributes to have.

I would add he is a fair battler for the ball (not a great tackler).

To be honest you have covered most of the important attributes of a player. He has flaws (can't beat a man, defensive positional sense is questionable) but he has proven over a number of years to be a top player.

There has always been a bit of a dichotomy between the media image of an all conquering champion and most genuine football fans knowledge of the fact that he was an excellent player but noone could live up to the hype. However in recent years football fans seem to have adopted the attitude that to balance his celebrity we need to denigrate his talents.

True, but my point was the way (some) people go on about him..

I've (believe it or not) heard some pundits actually portraying him as a good dribbler:haha:

Harsh on Ronaldo, as much as I hate the little squirt, you have to admit he is a quality player.
