    Drogba African Player of Year

:whatever: fair play to him and all that, but the reason of the thread - just heard this on the radio, this is how it was announced

Chelsea's Drogba has been named african footballer of the year beating Eto'o and Makelele last time i checked wasn't he a french national.

Yeah, but he was born and raised in Africa. He's still African, so therefore should qualify for the award.

surely tho there is loads pf players in that situation, so techinically speaking he could be named european and african footballer of the year

I don't see the problem. Brazilians win the European player of the year award all the time.

Aye. Patrick Vieria being one of the most prominent. I'm sure he should have won this award at least once in the last decade or so.

I'm pretty sure that Weah won both awards. Depends on which way you look at it. The Africans pick the best African player in the world, the Europeans pick the best player playing in Europe.

na now problem with it, just thought it was strange thats all - I know non europeans have won the european player award, but never heard of it for any other continent - my point is i just thought it strange he was mentioned, when all of the other players who would of been eligible over the years have seemingly never got a look in - as per spud gun's post below

my point exaclty - surely Patrick Vieria should of been in the running for this at least once, if makelele was - off to dig up so more info, as i said it was on radio, they may have got it erong and I'm just going off on one

it seems that the radio have got it wrong, i knew there was something wrong about it,

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, the top scorer in English soccer's Premiership, was named African Player of the Year for 2006 to become the first Ivory Coast winner of the award.

The 28-year-old Drogba beat Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o by five votes in a poll of national team coaches from 35 African countries. Chelsea and Ghana midfielder Michael Essien was third.
They got their chelsea midfielders mixed up

No mention of Salif Diao then? How strange! He must have been 4th.

Well, it was expected, he's been influental for Chelsea. If he wasn't at Chelsea, Fowler knows where they would be this season... Probably fighting with Everton for the Intertoto place... :whatever:

But then again, I don't give a **** about these kinds of awards. Will probably care when Momo wins them... But until then, Drogba, Makekekelelelele, Eto'o, Pussyien or any other chap can have them...
