View Full Version : Tuesday's Cheltenham tips
Anyone fancy one? If enough people are up for it then say so here and we can discuss a set of rules etc. I've just seen a game on another forum and we could potentially just nab their 'system' and go with that.
Here are the rules for the aforemention comp I spotted on a Celtic forum...
It's a bit complex so any suggestions of a simpler format would be welcomed.
The competition will start on Tuesday March 13th and will finish with the final race on Friday 16th
The rules. Please read carefully
1. Each day every entrant will be allocated 600 points.
2. All your points must be allocated that day. You can’t carry any points forward.
3. You can only pick one horse in each race.
4. You don't have to pick a horse in each race but you will limited to a single bet limit of 300 points on one horse per day. If you put more than 300 pts on one horse the selection will be settled on 300 pts and you will lose anything above that stake This rule applies to all days except Friday when in quiet desperation you can put your daily allocation on one horse if you so desire and do what is now known as a 'Finner'. For the new bhoys this phrase was coined when Finnerbache came from almost last to first after staking all his 600 pts on his selection and his choice romped home to give him the Tipster prize.
5. There is also a bonus system in operation.
4-6 winners - extra 1,000pts
7-9 winners - extra 1,500pts
Over 9 winners - extra 2,000pts
6. You can back each way. The following rules will apply to each way betting.
· In races of 5 runners or less no each way backing will be allowed
· In races of 6 runners each way will apply to first 2 horses home
· In races of 8 to 15 runners each way will apply to first 3 horses home.
· In races with 16 runners or more each way will apply to first 4 horses home.
· Each way bets will be settled at 1/4 the odds.
For those that are not familiar with each way betting I've provided an example below.
You back Horse A with 100 points each way which is a total stake of 200 points
Horse A's odds are 10/1 in a 16-runner race
If Horse won you would get a return of 1450 points (1100 for win and 350 for the place)
If Horse A was 2nd, 3rd or 4th you would get a return of 350pts.
7. Only single selections allowed no multiple bets (i.e. doubles, trebles etc.)
8. NON –RUNNERS – The rule is:
Replacement selections of non-runners will be allowed until the start of the first race. After this the points staked on any non-runners will be carry on to your next selection. If you have no further selections then the points will then go onto the favourite of the race your original selection was in (If joint favourites then your points will go on lowest racecard number) . Given I could potentially mess this part up feel free to point out where this is happening to you so I pick them up.
9. Dead heat - if your horse is involved in a dead heat then it will be settled at half the stake of your selection as per betting shops rules.
10. At the end of each day you will either have a pot of winning points or zero if you haven't had any winners or placed horses.
11. Points won will not be carried forward into your points pool for the next day. So if you win 1,000 pts on the day you won't be able to use them in addition to your daily allocation.
12. The winner of the competition will be the person who has the most accumulative points at the end of the last race on Friday.
13. All selections should be entered before the first race each day. Any entries after this will not be accepted.
14. Please only post selections in this thread to make it easier for me to tally the results. If you wish to discuss the racing there will be a separate thread.
15. Please no spoilers there will be separate thread for discussing results.
Entries should appear like so including the gaps.
1.20 Your selection 100pts
1.55 Your selection 50pts
2.30 No selection
3.05 Your selection 100 pts EW = 200pts
3.40 Your selection 50pts
4.15 Your selection 200pts
Any problems or anything you don’t understand PM me and I’ll try and sort it out.
Cheers and good luck.

I'm still interested if it's a goer mate!
Aye, we'll see by about mid-morning tomorrow. If there's no more than, I dunno, say about 10, then there's little point. No worries either way, but I do love a good tipping contest.
I doubt even 10 people frequent the gambling forums on here Shaggy!

OK then - my selections for today are:
2:00 Granit Jack 100pts
2:35 My Way de Solzen 100pts
3:15 Brave Inca 200pts
4:00 Juveigneur 200pts
No selection in the others.
Outside of the tipping contest I am backing Brave Inca and Juveigneur and am including all four in an each way yankee (even though the odds won't be great).
Good luck everyone!
Looks like the tipping comp won't get off the ground but we can still post our selections in here to see who does well and who doesn't...!!

You've just swung it for me - I'm having a small EW bet on Jayo too. It's the Independent's Nap for today.
Need a good first day - it's always easier when you are playing with the bookies money for days 2,3 and 4 rather than chasing your losses!

Just got back from the bookies. I normally punt online these days but for Cheltenham I just HAVE to smell the betting shop.
Studied the form in more detail there and I've changed my mind in the opener. Wins Now, Tipp All Star and Tyson are all tempting, but I've steamed in on Granit Jack.

Shaggy, do a bit of modding between this and the other thread so we've all the tips in one place. I cant be arsed going between 2 threads for it, Im sure you appreciate there are some lazy bastards about this site.
Well this thread is mainly specific to today's racing, so I've edited the title given that there aren't enough punters for a tipping comp.

Any horses over 4/1, I'll be backing Eachway to try aand at least get my money back. The bigger priced EW's I mentiond above, I will have a smaller flutter on as well as my main bet.

Thank fuck I took Granite Jack as part of an e/w accumulator. Cannot believe the result of the first race - lets hope its not going to be one of those festivals.
Granit Jack one for the notebooks I think - future chaser.
Lennon in the next each way for me.
Eye catching name or do you genuinely fancy it? :D
I backed My Way De Solzen at last year's festival and it obliged at around 8/1, so I'm staying loyal. I fancy his stamina will get him up the hill again, and the stiff finish should compensate for the slightly short trip.

I don't know - it seemed to want to run through every hurdle instead of going over the top of them. Still, I am slightly up on the first race, having had it each way, so come on De Solzen in the second!

I do, proper love Cheltenham. It makes me wish I was still a full-time punter, but your Southwells, Plumptons and Ludlows can't hold a candle to meetings like Cheltenham and Aintree. At least you know they're all trying, for a start.

I really fancy Hardy Eustace - he never got the run of the race when beaten by Detroit City last time, got beat by about a length and is 4lb better off at the weights this time around.
With a bit of luck in running I'm confident he'll turn the form round.

The last looks a wide open affair with Gaspara and Puvoir the two to beat.

Jayo made a mistake at the second last when coming up to challenge for third place according to the radio.
Happy with my day today, ended up doubling my money. Not quite in your league though Taffy. Still, having just arrived back from Rome, at least the Welsh are winning something this week!
Yep I'm happy with today, more than doubled my money...although as usual I'm feeling greedy and want to win substantially more. :D
Roll on tomorrow.
I followed Fagan's tips (apart from Nina's nap  ) and am down. Nina's nap would have seen me break even-ish. :o

:finger:
Did some sums earlier on and I ended up over £200 up on the day! Had four winners out of the six races (40/1 and 50/1 were the other winners I missed out on - can't have everything I suppose ;) ) and had 6 e/w winners also!
Also did a 'lucky15s' for the day with two winners of the four coming in netting me over £42 off a £7.50 stake - all four would have got me over a grand and a half, but that would have been just too greedy!
Tomorrow's another day but I hope for much of the same, I wish, but the last three races don't look too good so far and will need a lot of luck to find some winners there. Well Chief and Denman are almost certain 'bankers' for tomorrow - if there ever is such a thing at Cheltenham I suppose, and Aran Concerto looks the one to beat early in the afternoon too!
Shall have a closer look tomorrow morning in work - well I must do something to help the working day go by, and will try to post my bets up earlier than today, however, one lucky day at the Festival is all I can really hope for as it's usually doom and gloom by the end of the week for me going on past records!
I shall savour today, and hope for more of the same, but I've learnt that it doesn't usually go like that in this game very often and will have to be careful not to throw it all back at Joe Coral and his mates by the end of the week - I've a weekend away hoping to finally see a Welsh win coming up so a few quid to spend there would be good!
I followed Fagan's tips (apart from Nina's nap  ) and am down. Nina's nap would have seen me break even-ish. :o

Should give me some dosh to play with for the rest of the week!!!
Long way to go yet though, but it's a start!
I put a small £4 EW bet on Sublimity just before the race started. Had a reverses forecast of My Way De Solzen and Fair Along in Race 2. Had Gaspara win in race 6 and EW on Juviegneur in Race 4 who was beaten into second by a snout.

Cracking first day - let's hope today's just as profitable (but I doubt it!).
