View Full Version : Do you reckon . . .

. . . Bellamy will score more all competitions than Djibs did?

Now, don't get me wrong - I always loved Djibs - his enthusiasm, his extravagance, his love for the club, and most importantly - his goals.

But, I think it was fairly obvious to all where his shortcomings lay - an unwillingness at times to work for the team (which did improve to be fair, but as a whole. . .), his decision making, his inconsistency and so on.

Having said that, despite all of the things against him, including the ones out of his control such as lack of opportunities and being played out of position, he still managed to score 19 goals.

Will Bellamy do better?

I reckon he will.

If he avoids injury (and attacking the coaching staff) I think he could do it.

By jove, he could do it.

Wow, that's a tough question.

I don't think he will.

Why's that?

He's almost as quick (quicker with the ball), he has better control, he'll chase down the lost causes, he can dribble past his man as opposed to relying on knocking it past him and chasing - which leads into my next point - Cisse needed the killer ball to set him away otherwise he frequently would either not get past his man or be sheparded towards the corner flag.

IMO Bellamy is more of a creator - in that he can 'make' a goal by himself. Can't remember seeing Djibs do that too often.

07-08-06, 01:16 PM
Cisse got 19 in all comps, didn't he?

I can see Bellamy getting that too.

BUT crucially, I see Bellamy giving us the extra dimension of pace upfront, without the drawbacks which Cisse gave us - ie standing offside with hands on hips and making so so many wring decisions when in attacking positions.

Even if Bellamy doesn't score quite as many as Cisse, I think we will be a much better attacking side with Bellamy in the team instead of the Frenchman.

I think Bellamy will do better but probably by not too much.

I don't know what Bellamy's record is like against the larger teams though. I still think we need a player who will score in the big games.

Im not sure about his total tally, but Im fairly sure he´ll score more in the premiership. I also think we as a team will score more than last season, given that we have proper wingers. If he stays fit and we get a good run in the cups I think he can reach atlest 20 goals. A lot of if´s and but´s though...

What is wrong with a bit of optimism? We haven't started the season yet, so it is the time for optimism!!! :)

I think Bellamy will provide much more to the team than Cisse did, but I don't think he'll get 19 goals. Anything over 15 will do for me.

Okay - to all those in the NO camp, what does Djibs have over Bellamy, and why do you reckon he won't exceed 19?

Lack of games against 'pub' teams?

Not as good a player?

Suspensions?

Why?

dww

Djibs had a very lucky season and games against as you point out some pretty weak opposition. I also can't see Bellamy lasting all season without injury or suspension.

Yeah but he has never played for a team as good as us.

He will get a mountain of oppertunities to score.

Remember Djibs clocked up most of his tally in the first half of the season.

If he can do that, then surely Craig canin a WHOLE season.

I don't have any problems with what you're saying about Bellamy, he's a better all round player than Djibs from what I've seen of him.

But realistically unless we play a lot of really poor teams in the League Cup and Bellamy plays in those games I can't see him hitting 20.

Here's his stats for seasons where he's played in the Premiership :

00/01 - 8 Goals in all competitions

01/02 - 15 Goals in all competitions (three against Brentford in the League Cup)

02/03 - 10 Goals in all competitions

03/04 - 9 Goals in all competitions

05/06 - 17 Goals in all competitions ( 2 against Huddersfield, 2 against QPR)

It's always a worthwhile exercise to look at a players goalscoring history when attempting to make a judgement on how his goalscoring is likely to be in the future. Based on these it looks like 20 goals is out of Bellamy's reach unless he plays games in the cups against weak opposition.

In his best year he scored 17 goals, was that his "career year" that he won't reach the heights of again ? Was it a sign of things to come ? He is after all at an age now where players are said to come into their prime, although that is a horrible generalisation. He's also at better club than previously which in theory should mean that he'll get more chances to score. He'll also face more competition to get into the team too, and he can be a quite injury prone.

I think that's covered everything now....:D

Weighing up all the things for and against , along with his Premiership history if I had to put money on Bellamy to score 20 or not to score 20, I'd back him not to score 20.

For the record I don't think he'll be far off 20.

I just reckon with providers as good as Stevie & Xabi, he'll be smashing them in - again it comes down to the fact that I think he's a better all-round goal scorer than Djibs. If and when he gets an understanding with those two, and Robbie/Crouch/Kuyt/Whoever I think he has a better awareness of other players and makes more intelligent runs.

I'm hoping for/expecting 15 in the league plus whatever in cups etc.

Based on what exactly do you think he'll score 20 goals ?

based on the fact he got a one in two ratio last year with Blackburn. He is maturing as a player. He is bustin a gut to prove he is good enough for LFC.

He has looked sharp pre-season and if he can score 12 for a team not renownedfor scoring goals he can easily get seven more for us.

Injuries permitting he willget morethan twenty this year.
