Traore poised for £2m move Aug 7 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DJIMI TRAORE is on the verge of leaving Anfield in a £2m move to Charlton.

Liverpool were hoping a deal would go through today, ending the defender's seven-year Anfield career.

A fee has been agreed with the Londoners, with the Reds hoping talks would conclude successfully within 24 hours.

Somewhat remarkably, Traore is one of the longest serving players left at Anfield, and he'll leave the club with an impressive list of honours, including a Champions League winners' medal.

He was signed by ex-boss Gerard Houllier for £750,000 from Laval in 1999, when there were high hopes he'd follow in the tradition of world class French defenders.

Unfortunately, Traore never hit those heights, although it could be argued he's often been maligned far more than his overall performances deserved.

Now Charlton boss Iain Dowie is prepared to give Traore a fresh chance at The Valley, while Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez will be happy to have more finances in the kitty.

The Reds are currently back in negotiations with Feyenoord as they try to conclude a deal for Dirk Kuyt.

The Dutch want £10m for the hitman, who scored in his side's 2-0 friendly win over Middlesbrough yesterday.

Liverpool are unlikely to meet that valuation, but are still working to shift more fringe players out of the club so they can afford a substantial offer.

Kuyt has privately made it clear Liverpool are his first choice, despite interest from several other Premiership clubs, most notably Newcastle.

I think he will do well for them. He isn't a Liverpool level defender but I predict he will do really well for Charlton.

I think he will do well at Charlton.

He will get a good run of games in a position he prefers playing out of the attention of playing for Liverpool where every game, performance and error is highlighted beyond belief.

Good luck to him though.

Yes thanks for giving it a go Djimi.

Me too. Strange one that. He gave us all more palpitations than the rest of the squad put together, but I find there's rarely any malice aimed towards him. Some strange kind of empathy!

I still remember the day we signed Djimi, I was sitting in a stuffy Crosby office reading the Echo about this great player we were getting – fending off half of the crème of Europe for the signature of the next Lilian Thuram.

Never really worked out did it…

I suppose we have made a £1.25m profit on the guy after seven years service – isn’t he the third longest serving first team player or something? Astonishing. Didn’t we turn down similar bids over the last seven years from Blackburn and Everton? Hopefully this will be a good move for the guy.

All the best Djimi, thanks for the memories (admittedly some good, some bad and many comical).

Cheerio Djimi.

A disastrous first minute, one or two dodgy moments later on, but immense in the 2nd half at times and who can forget his clearance off the line from Shevchenko after Jerzy fumbled. For that, I will always be grateful.

I wish him well.

Is there a buy-back clause like with Barragan?

I know it's more likely that Princess Anne will marry Wayne Rooney but just suppose Djimi suddenly became the man-mountain we always hoped he'd be....

I mean, as a defender, he has everything going for him except the ability to defend. If he masters that - the world is his oyster.

Anyhoo - I hope Djimi gets a great reception at Anfield this year.

Good luck to Djimi. Not as bad a player as some make out. He gave it his best but just not good enough at the end of the day. I hope he gets a good reception back at Anfield. He made some crucial crucial challenges on the way to European glory.
