I find it hard to understand why we havn't seen an exciting Irish prospect in the Liverpool youths recently.

If our scouting department is as good as it's supposed to be, i cant see why they havn't snapped up a few lads from the Schoolboy football over here(or have they?).

I can assure you, there are some top notch players over here in the DDSL but a lot don't get paid enough attention and decide to give up trying to make any sort of a footballing career when they hit about 16/17....

Thoughts?

Yeah I'm sure we signed at least one very young Irish lad.

Did we?

There was a chap on another site saying that we signed the best talent in the Eircom league but everyone thought he was awind-up merchant as there was no proof of him even existing on the clubs website...

Maybe it was true..

"Liverpool Football Club have completed the signing of 16-year-old Wilton United midfielder Shane O'Connor.

Shane was spotted by Liverpool coach Jim Waldron at one of the club's Academy soccer camps in Cork last year.

The youngster has signed a 2-year deal."

Dont ask where I found this:D

If we've any sense we'll got out and sign Jamie Duff very soon, he put on an excellent display for the Irish U-18's this weekend.

Can anyone guess who his brother is ? :D

It can't be pleasant being upstaged by your younger brother. :D

Duff Man off the Simpsons?

What position does he play?

His brother is far from being upstaged , even though he's committed himself to the Premier League's graveyard.

We have also signed Michael Collins. Born in 1990. He played for Cherry Orchard. Striker.

They haven't?!?! :D

I've had three or four too many tonight, and I'm not talking drinks. Already got myself hideously befuddled in another thread earlier.

One more and then bed.

Anyway...back to the topic in hand. He asks why we haven't seen an exciting Irish prospect at the Academy recently. Well, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't recall seeing any exciting Irish prospects anywhere for a long time. If one emerges, I'm sure we'll be sniffing around.

Kevin Doyle at Reading.

I think he's 22 but he will suprise a few in the Premiership this season.

Paul mac Shane at Man utd.

Anthony Stokes at arsenal has to be the biggest prospect though.

Ther'es also a young chap by the name of Rooney floating around the Irish youth set up!

Shaggy

The lad Doyle looks a decent player from what I've seen of him, but I don't think he's at the level we're looking for.

There's a 16 year old at Spurs aswell.

One to watch, Dixon is his name.

Has already been called up to the Seniors by Staunton for a training camp.

You're entirely correct, there isn't a whole lot of talent to shout about in the Irish system at the moment.

Good stuff. I'm also hoping that we sign Bobby Sands (born 1989), Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair (born 1990) and Roy Keane (born unfortunatley). :)

only very slightly off topic, but anybody know what happened to "Wilo Flood" at City. At one stage he seemed to have really made the break through, and looked an exciting prospect on the one or two occasions I had seen him play in the prem. Hadn't heard anything about him for a while, then last week I read somewhere where he has now been sold to Cardiff or somewhere shite like that.
Any idea's what happened?

Shaggy

Not sure what you mean by "what happened" to him? He has signed for Cardiff though, started on the bench for them at the weekend if I'm not mistaken.

What i mean is that he seemed like he'd really made it at city, was even talk of him getting a call up to the Senior Irish team, then nothing for a while and then out the door to a much poorer team.
Did he get injured, did the new city manager not fancy him, did his form just dip?

Pearce and him didn't get on. Apparently, he was a bit miffed at being dropped for the return of Claudio Reyna, and let it be known. Pearce took this as 'attitude problems' and shipped him out.

But yes, I agree, he looked quite promising for a while.

I've heard that the people at City thought he a little too light-weight to cut it in the premiership. To be honest, I haven't seen him so I can't comment. Just what I've heard though.

That explains it, cheers. From an irish point of view I hope he can get his career back on track, as previous posters have suggested, there is feck all coming through on the irish scene at the moment.

Some of Pearces's signings have been sh!te and not cheap either. He then proceeds to let Flood go to Cardiff for a measly 300,000!

Can't see the logic in that.

TBH, i don't think Pearce has a very good eye for players.

Decent Tactician, great motivator but it remains to be seen how he will get on at City.

We do seem to bring over a decent number of Irish lads but they never seem to make it or go back to Ireland when they are still young. There was Partridge a few years back and then Foley-Sheriden, and more recently there was a lot of talk about John-Paul Kelly. He was homesick though by all accounts. Maybe we are just not great at helping young players settle in

Shaggy
08-08-06, 01:11 PM
Yeah what the fuck happened to John Paul Kelly?

Foley-Sheridan went back to play in the Oirish league, didn't he?

Kelly is playing for Bohemians now I think and Foley-Sheridan is at St Patricks

Yeah that was announced on Today Fm some weeks back, supposed to be a decent enough player.
A business associate said to me he'd seen him play and that he was highly rated.

there was a good article on irish youngsters in the championship in last sundays independent ( i think it was ***) basically bemoaning the fact that no irish players are making the grade in the prem due to foreigners.

Nic83
08-08-06, 06:15 PM
In fairness, the English league is our main league too, just as it is for the Scots, Welsh and Northies.

The likes of France and Spain are considered the foreigners as they have a big league themselves and their style and culture are totally different.

I think we have some deal with Bohs that we can take John Paul Kelly back at some stage in the future if he develops well.

Similar to the Barragan deal then? I'm liking this little transfer strategy. Makes a change for us to be doing positive things in that area - however small and seemingly insignificant.

I'm almost certain I heard it mentioned around the time he made his debut for Bohs (where he knocked in two).

It's a smart strategy, even if the chances of him making it are slim enough.
