Thorpe denies doping allegations

Five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe has denied using performance-enhancing drugs and promised to clear his name after allegations made against him.

The French newspaper L'Equipe alleged that a test before Thorpe's retirement showed unusually high levels of naturally-occurring hormones.

"I have never cheated," said Thorpe. I was in complete shock to hear of this report, I didn't know what to do.

"My accomplishments in this sport in people's eyes are being diminished."

Thorpe continued: "I had no previous knowledge of any result of this kind and I did not understand how a test result that supposedly related to me, which must have been undertaken some time ago given my retirement, could be being leaked to a French newspaper when I did not know about it.

"I can now confirm that a test that was undertaken in May 2006 while I was in Australia returned unusual levels of testosterone and a hormone called leutenising hormone. Both these substances are naturally occurring substances.

"There are many innocent physiological and pathological reasons why a test may return unusual levels of these substances.

"The Australian Sport Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) were at pains to reassure me that I have not failed a drug test and they made it clear to me that any suggestion that is being made to this effect is just plain wrong.

"I have complete confidence that all the medical and scientific evidence will establish that I am clean.

"I have always been, and remain, a strong supporter of the drug testing system. Most people will probably recognise that I have been one of the most tested athletes.

"My reputation as a fair competitor is the most valuable thing that I take out of my time in swimming."

:haha:

Was waiting for someone to mention it.

On a side note, L'Equipe seem to be making a habit of this. Lance Armstrong last year, Thorpe at the moment. Wonder who will be next.

They have a case on each front. :handshake: Let's see in 2 or 3 years if what they've investigated doesn't resurface for good.

I was thinking much the same.

L'Equipe get a lot of publicity for this sort of thing. Neither Armstrong nor Thorpe have failed a drug test - in Armstrong's case there is no B sample to be tested.

I wonder whether L'Equipe would pursue French athletes so much. From what I recall they haven't been particularly critical of self-confessed, convicted drug cheat Richard Virenque. :grr:

Who is he?

A French cyclist, very successful from about 1994 to 2004 but heavily involved in systematic doping which was uncovered by French police in the Festina scandal in the '98 Tour de France.

He has been rehabilitated - always a favourite of the French public, he came back to set a record for the number of King of the Mountains prizes in the TdF and is currently working for Eurosport's French language service.

The thing is, the French have never really got over their hero being caught up in the scandal and then finally admitting to doping so they take every opportunity to say everyone's at it as a way of minimising Virenque's crime.

It may be correct to say that many cyclists have cheated and I'm sure it goes on in plenty of other sports too. However, the French media pursue it not as a way to get to the truth (they never bothered much before Festina) but in order to make themselves and their readers/viewers feel better about their inability to produce a French road cyclist capable of winning anything significant without cheating.
