Whats the craic with this lad's name?

I always thought he played for a club called Hesselink!
And I always wondered why,when anyone was speaking about thim,they said Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
I thought why? Poeple don't say Steven Gerrard of Liverpool!

But I was reading today that he may sign for Celtic from PSV and I thought to myself,PSV!!?? I thought he played for Hesselink!!

Anyone else or am I just retarded!!?

no, I first noticed this fella about 5 years back, and I think at the time I was as confused about his name as you are now. Hes one of them players who has no skill whatsoever, looks like he cant kick a ball yet always manages to score, especially just as youre about to say "hes fuckin shite him".

I remember it being discussed somewhere a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly, "of" means "or" in Dutch. It's from a 17th century land dispute between two families, one called Vennegoor and the other called Hesselink, which was settled through intermarriage with the resulting offspring carrying both names.

I don't think they were nobility or even landed gentry but then I'm not too up on the seventeenth century social hierarchy in Holland.
