Czech Republic v Wales (squad list and news)

    Welsh duo miss out again

Veteran striker John Hartson and West Brom rebel Jason Koumas have both been omitted from the Wales squad to play the Czech Republic in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Teplice on September 2.

National team boss John Toshack announced the most important squad of his two-year reign so far at the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel, Cardiff on Wednesday.

And it has become clear that when Hartson met Toshack last week to make himself available for his country again after last season's retirement, it was agreed this next squad was too soon for a comeback.

Toshack, not surprisingly, wants to keep faith with the players who have been working with him for two years.

The 31-year-old's non-selection would therefore underline the fact he will only be used sparingly, or as an emergency inclusion, at the moment.

Koumas, who withdrew at the last moment from the squad which drew with Bulgaria last week because of his lack of fitness and a dispute with West Brom, was not expected to regain his place.

The 26-year-old midfielder has not trained all summer with the Baggies and has now been told by Cardiff - where he was on loan last season - a potential transfer will not go ahead for financial reasons.

Koumas has held clear-the-air talks with Albion boss Bryan Robson but will need to train regularly and regain his fitness before Toshack will consider him again.

Burnley goalkeeper Danny Coyne has also been left out after only recently returning to action following a cruciate knee ligament injury.

With Wolves' Craig Davies and Wrexham's Marc Williams both suspended from Under-21s duty after red cards against Israel last week, Bristol City striker David Cotterill will drop down from the seniors.

The Under-21s face a UEFA Championships qualifier with Turkey in Cardiff on Saturday week, the day that the seniors start their Euro 2008 campaign away to the Czechs. Wales play Brazil at White Hart Lane three days later in a prestigious friendly.

    Squad:

Jones (QPR), Brown (Blackburn), Garner (Orient), J Collins (West Ham), Gabbidon (West Ham), Delaney (Aston Villa), Duffy (Portsmouth), Edwards (Wolves), Nyatanga (Derby), Partridge (Bristol City), Ricketts (Hull), Crofts (Gillingham), Davies (Everton), Fletcher (Palace), Robinson (Norwich), Ledley (Cardiff), Vaughan (Crewe), Bellamy (Liverpool), Giggs (Man Utd), Earnshaw (Norwich), Parry (Cardiff).

Like you said, Koumas is a player we need but I can't see him playing again under Tosh.

He's used some bad excuses to get out of matches before, I think one of them was because his dog had died or something!

I think that he will get one more chance from Tosh to play again, he could never have been involved against the Czech because he hasn’t been training (I was a bit surprised to see him sign a new three year deal for WBA!!).

Didn’t he use another excuse once that he’d found an old WW2 bomb in his back yard and he wanted to stay at home to dig the rest of the garden to see what else he would find?!

with the weak team we have, we really need all our best players available.

john hartson still scores, koumas is a quality midfielder we need.

personally, i'd still love Savage to kiss and make up.

I agree with all of the above. That's the one thing you've got to admit about Savage, he's a ****ing nuisance on the pitch. He covers a lot of ground and breaks up the opposition's rythym.

Savage would have been ideal in the centre of the park for us on Saturday, but it's not ot be!

I think Koumas will get another chance under Toshack and I don't think he'd have started on Saturday anyway, but he'll be crucial for us in creating chances against the 'weaker' sides and at home as the competition progresses.

Gutted. We didn't deserve to lose that football match.

Certainly not. We had a few golden opportunities, most notably when Bellamy went through one on one with the keeper. We needed something from it imo.

A lot of decisions went against us. I think one of the off-sides was called because the player's arm was sticking out a bit.

                        fcuking **** result.

surely that goal was offside cos the keeper usually counts as 1 of the 2 players needed and he was ahead of play

Felt gutted afterwards, especially the way thos goals went in.

Bad decisions by the officials has cost us again, especially as we came back into it with 5 minutes to play.

A draw would have been a welcome result, but we could even have won that one if Bellamy could have found the target.

Just got back from Prague (there was nothing in Teplice so we stayed in Prague over the weekend).

Saw the goals on TV and it looks as though we were robbed. It was a bit difficult to seen from where we were stood (in line with the 18 Yard line when on the side which Wales were attacking second half).
