View Full Version : David Nugent
Is it me or is it fucking weird that Pompey signed him in the summer for £6m and are now reportedly trying to sell him?
At first it seemed a ludicrous bullshit rumour but now I'm not so sure. He's lost his place (after just two starts) and the stories about trying to flog him are becoming more widespread.
Why?!?!?
FWIW I don't think he's "all that" and certainly not worth the £6m they paid for him. Has Redknapp seen him in training and decided he's not good enough? Or has he just used him?
Very strange.

One of the most average strikers around really (England International, don't you know:rash:)......never saw anything to make you sit up and take notice..
Redknapp probably realised this right after seeing him up close for the first time and may have a chance to offload him quickly to make back what they shelled out..
It's a weird one certainly.
Saw it in a newspaper a month or so ago and thought nothing of it - you know - perhaps a typo in the article. But now everyday there seems to be something about Harry wanting to offload him.
Perhaps he's got a shite attitude (from what I've seen of him, he appears to be a bit of a cocky ****), or maybe he's not as good as Harry thought. I don't even think he's started for them yet
Certainly a strange one either way.

He started their first two games and has been bombed out since.

Ah I see... does seem stranger then that Redknapp won't give him a run of 4-5 games in the Prem to see how he does. He's obviously not happy with his strikers with sniffing around Yakubu/Anelka and so on.
Plus he's not said anything to stop speculation on Nugent leaving, so it looks like he'll be off :source:

He's average at best. I suspect that Redknapp has had a closer look and realised this for himself. Nugent is a good Championship player but he's not suited to the Prem.
To slow, terrible first touch, poor movement etc...
The fact the the blueshite, who he supports, wouldn't pay more than £4m for him yet they'll pay £11m for Yakubu says alot to me.
Yep i too said the same thing to my brother, looks like hes fallen out already at Portsmouth, from all accounts Harry Redknapp is fair man so he must have really pissed him off or be really crap!
He should have gone to Sunderland the silly guy, He would have been 1st choice and had a run of games at a club where they haven't got the quality of striker thats going to compete and keep you out the 1st team.
Nugent is just not good enough IMO, but I would have thought he would have got a better run to prove himself.
Portsmouth are a very athletic team playing at a quick pace and I do not think Nugent is suited to that style. I do think that Nugent is better suited at a club like Derby.
Good business if Pompey get their money back.

I'd be very, very surprised if Pompey get anything near 6 million for him.
They'll be lucky if they get more than 4.

I think its very bizzare indeed.
Maybe Harry has seen that Anelka is a real possiblity and said that Nugent is not as good as him so they can get rid of him.
Bizzare..............
but can they sell him?
isnt there a rule about how many teams you can play for in a year?
i thought you could only play for two. and he has played for north end and for pompey.
could be wrong

AFII is your man to sort this out.:handshake:
I thought it was July 1st to June 30th.
i think nugent is ok for the championship but doesnt have the edge for the prem. could be wrong though.
Harry Redknapp has admitted Derby want to sign David Nugent but the Portsmouth boss says he wants the striker to stay.
Pompey signed Nugent for £6m in July from Preston, but after starting the first two games of the season, he was on the bench for the last two.
The 22-year-old is now a target for Derby where he would link up with Billy Davies, his former boss at Preston.
"Derby do want to sign Nugent, but he's only just joined us and I'm happy to keep him here," said Redknapp.
"He's a young player and obviously he wants to play but at the moment Kanu has been absolutely brilliant, John Utaka's a threat and Benjani does well.
"So it has been difficult for David and he has to be patient."
Newspaper reports suggest Redknapp wants to sign £12m-rated Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka - but he may have to sell before he buys.
It is a strange one. Mind you he had a chance when through one on one with the keeper in the United game and slipped on his arse in the penalty box, and then did the same thing again against Bolton the following Saturday!
Harry must have been trembling even more after that :haha:

He would be a fool to go to Derby and if so he was better off staying at PNE
i think pne would have him back at the mo

He's never a 6m player.
Kanu always had class, even if he's struggled to show it at times.
That Utaka could be as quick as Torres, i need to see more of him, but he looks fucking rapid.
Benjani hasn't impressed me, but he's clearly a better option than Nugent.
...
Selling Nugent for 6m and buying Anelka for 12m would be excellent business in anyone's book.

The strikers that Pompey have at the moment are better athletically and mentally. They can stretch defences and scores goals. At this moment, Nugent looks to have lost confidence and Redknapp feels he has better strikers in Kanu and Utaka who can finish the chances.

David Nugent wouldn't be the first player to come and play in the Premier League and need some sort of settling in period.
Its very strange that he is being linked with other clubs so early so perhaps Harry has seen something he doesn't fancy. He certainly isn't one to mess about in the transfer market.
He just needs to find his feet but he might not get that at Portsmouth.
i found it a bit stange when seeing that they were prepared to sell nugent to fund moves for anelka/yakubu. he only just arrived at the club and he must have done something wrong, although 'arry has come out and said he doesnt want to sell him i would be worried if i was nugent as theres no smoke without fire, so to speak.
I thought he'd turn out to be bit of gem for pompey this season, though I must say he ws never worth the 6mill, slash that in half and that'd be a more than realistic figure.
As has been mentioned, maybe Harry and Nugent have fallen out or Harry thinks he can use him to get a better player in? who knows! be interesting the see how this one plays out, esp following harrt's comments that the lad has to show some paitence! maybe it is a case of him being a small fish in a big pond!

The guy loves the Bitters. There must be something wrong with him. It was quite interesting to hear Harry Redknapp on Goals on Sunday two weeks ago saying there is no better club for development than Liverpool and thats why Jamie left Bournmouth

I was going to post this earlier but quite honestly i thought it was a typo when Nugents name was mentioned.
Strange one, doesnt say much about Redknapps judgement of a player if hes signed him, watched him train and then realised hes crap, looks like Harry may have done another Marco Boogers
Surely he would have scouted him first??
I suspect that it is the player who isn't happy. I think Redknapp would give him some time to bed considering he has started him already this season.
In the current market a young English forward with any chance of making it is worth somewhere in the £4m-£6m range so I guess he went for just about a sensible value. He isn't however the sort of creative forward who the others are at Pompey which puts more pressure on him to score. I think it was a bad move for him as he isn't ideally suited to the way Portsmouth play and while he might be a good option fo rthe manager at this stage of his career unless he was at a really top team he really has to look to be playing regularly.
I would jump ship to Derby if I was him, a guarenteed chance to test yourself against PL teams.
