    No 'escape' for Micah Richards
    By David Mcdonnell 05/10/2007

Micah Richards' talks with Manchester City about a new contract have stalled over the club's refusal to grant him an escape clause.

Richards and his representatives have been negotiating for more than a month over an improved deal to reflect the defender's new-found worth following his rapid progress with City and England.

The 19-year-old has been on an incentive-based contract since he joined from Oldham, but his representatives feel he should now be on a guaranteed wage of around £40,000 a week.

While the Eastlands club are happy to make the new deal less reliant on bonuses, they have refused to entertain the prospect of allowing Richards a getout clause in the contract.

This is because Oldham are entitled to 20 per cent of any fee under the terms of the deal they struck with City two years ago.

If City agreed to a clause stating Richards is free to talk to clubs who offer a specific amount, that would reduce their ability to get the best price for their prized asset.

The defender is currently valued at around £20million, but City would want around £25m for him to compensate for the amount they are obliged to pass on to Oldham.

While the Blues publicly insist they have no intention of selling Richards, and the player says he is happy at the club, he is likely to leave next summer for a club offering him Champions League football.

If that happened, City would want to slap their own transfer value on Richards.

Although there is no suggestion the talks are in danger of collapsing, it is clear the situation is some way from being resolved.

Chelsea made known their interest in Richards back in January, but did not follow it up with a firm offer, while City's rivals United are said to be considering a move for the player next summer.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

    Clearly a slow news day.

If he is worth £20M (which I sincerely doubt), the fee should be £20M, not £20M plus whatever they have to pay Oldham.

I'm not sure what they paid Oldham to get Richards, but any subsequent sale would result in a massive profit regardless.
    Oh I don't know.
