If you buy average, you become average?

For so many years since the evolution of the Premiership (even pre-Rafa) we spent ****loads of money of average players, particulary strikers and attacking players.

Apart from Torres, Rafa's followed suit and spent a ****load of money (I don't give a flying **** on what we've recouped) and amased a group of very average players.

I think we are paying the price for this now big time.

If it wasn't for our homegrown players (Fowler, Owen, etc), we'd languashing be in mid table mediocrity.

What happens when Stevie and Carra hang up their boots?

Unfortunately we've never had the money to fill the squad with TOP quality like Man Yoo and the Chavs, so we've suffered.

In todays game and especially with rafa where the squad is important he has made a mistake of buying for numbers sake as apposed to saving and buying quality and then giving opportunity to youth.

How else did the likes of macanaman, Fowler, Gerrard get their chances?
    We come not to play.

I think that's the best title I've ever seen on an LFC forum. I don't need to read your post, the title says it all. Spot on mate.

I will read post now and hope it doesn't go downhill

(would have been better without the "?" though!

For years, I've wished we would sign 3 big money signings rather than 8 average players. Never happened and as you say, we are now as average as these players that have been bought.

And another problem now is that we don't even produce anymore top homegrown players. We are in a bit of a mess me thinks.

Althought in saying that, Rafa HAS built a squad full of talent. There are only about 3 or 4 that I think have no place at LFC. So it's Ironic that we finally have a decent squad, albeit no homegrown young budding stars, that we can't perform. But then, the one area we lack is the most important - striking quartet. We have 1.5 not a quartet

I'd agree with you but I look at some of our players that he's bought and I think they are good enough for the job they have to do. Arbeloa to me seems a fine left-back. Pepe is an excellent goalie. Agger a great centre-back (when fit). Alonso is capable of more than he's showing. Lucas looks promising. Babel too. Yossi can impact games. Crouch was one of the top scorers in Europe last season. And so on.

We have the tools they just aren't being used properly because Rafa's got too much of an eye on "the next game".

In fairness mate, we have had enough money. The sum of all the **** adds up. Maybe not AS much but we had enough for 2 or 3 big players each year.

I think it's more of buying average and being average because the manager doesn't know how to use those players properly.

Everton, City and Villa, on paper, haven't bought any better than us.

Nic you know as well as I do that you cant produce these kind of players by magic.

For the quality that you want/expect at LFC, who has come through anywhere in the country in the last few years? Richards, Rooney, maybe Ashley Young. Thats 3 homegrown players out of an entire country.

And what with the competition you're lucky if you snap up one or two from anywhere else.

he was a free before Moores sold the club.
and a 4th striker that might of worked.

I just love the way as soon as things get touch the the old we need to spend more.

Would they have any chance of being picked by Rafa even if we did have one or two quality youngsters/homegrown players?

                        I doubt it.

Which free players have ever turned out to be master strokes? McAllister became a cult hero but not a world beater.

What makes Rafa think that a player with a 1 in 4 goal ratio at Leverkusen (who hasn't scored since September for Liverpool) can be a decent fixture for Liverpool?

No. Every club do buy average players, but when those average players come to a bigger club with better players and better training facilities(than their previous clubs) they get moulded into better, good and eventually great players. But with us whatever might the reasons be, that doesnt seem to happen very often.

The players like Hleb, Sagna, Drogba, Vidic, Ronaldo etc are just average players when they were bought in, but they got better as they got used to their new team and teammates. How many of the average players we bought in can you name who got better and made a difference to the team as time passed by?? May be Agger and Masch..and partly Crouch and Pennant! Rest of the players like Bellamy, Kuyt, Voronin, Aurelio, may be even Xabi and Garcia didnt turn into better players with us imo, let alone world class players!

I honestly think that we now have a good squad, and that all we need to do now is add the qualiy players that become available.

Top quality players make the difference. They bring the confidence of your whole squad up with their moments of quality and came make draws become wins.

Just think, two top quality players in the summer = another Stevie G and Torres. Instead of relying on two players we are relying on 4 players.

And the better they do, the more confidence we get, and it becomes a positive circle.
