    Cantona..

No doubt a crazy ****er, but just how good was he? IMO in pure ability he's up there with the very best, perhaps not the Pele/Maradona echelon, but the Zidane's, Van Basten's and Ronaldo's.

He moved to this country with a bit (lot) of a bad boy reputation. In his first season at leeds he took them to the title. The next season he moved to the mancs and then took them to back to back titles (including a double). Got rightfully banned for 8months??? for assaulting a fan and they lost the title. Came back the next season and they won the double and then another premiership the year after. No player will ever have the same influence on the premiership as him, he completely revolutionised it and after him their was a massive influx of foreign and in particular french players to the league.

Could have been a great, but fell out with too many people too often, particularly in France. 45 caps and 20 goals was never enough for a player of his ability.

Glad he only really played 4 years for them.

Ah Alan, thought you might pop up in a United related thread! His achievements in a relatively short space of time (92odd to 97 in eng?) are extraordinary IMO. Apparently Souness was offered him as well when he moved to Leeds and turned him down. Something of an oversight! The kind of player that home supporters love, and everyone else despises. Falls short of greatness due to a lack of play on the very biggest stage (world cup, CL finals etc), but one hell of a player nonetheless.

The most influential player the premiership will EVER see, whether we like it or not. May 96 was one of the worst moments of my life.

Do you know, when that ball was cleared out for a corner, i knew in that moment that we were ****ed. I was screaming at him to clear it for a throw and it went out for a ******* corner. I just knew in my stomach that we would pay for that.

Thanks to a moment of Lunacy by David James my worst fears were confirmed. ****ing sickening thinking about it

Always bottled it in the big European games. He scored some nice goals against Barnsley and Derby though.

Absolutely no way on this earth. Not in a million years is he in that bracket.

He bottled it every time in Europe and barely managed a single memorable peformance against the continent's best.

A great player in the league against mainly dross. A flat-track bully but a very good one.

bang on. his actual ability was no match for his own perception of that ability. still though, when the sardines follow the seagull it's because the trawlers already BIG WANK

I think that's a pretty good summation. He looked better than he really was as the level of the PL wasn't that high at the time and he was one of the first high profile foreign players to come to the league. Undoubtedly he was very good but he wasn't an all time great. Not by a long shot.

                        Spot on.

In a team that were head and shoulders above anything in this country, he was great, level the playing field and he was certainly no world beater.

                          MYTH

He started 6 games and scored 3 goals. Take away the 3 goals and Leeds would have still won those games.

Very overrated player. Bottled the big European games. Crap for France too.

Zidane, Van Basten, Ronaldo level? Don't make me laugh - they were in a different league.
