View Full Version : Michael Owen Wants A Pay Rise?
The Evening Chronicle report today that Michael Owen "the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star will ask for a rise in his £103,000-a-week wages if he is to stay at St James' Park beyond the confines of his current deal".
The 28-year-old England international has dismissed talk of a new contract and "a club spokesman" confirmed there has been no deal put on the table.
NUFC spokesman: "We have not started any negotiations with Michael over a new contract."
Owen has only made 36 starts in three years and his four-year contract will end in the summer of 2009, having cost Newcastle a staggering £37,424,000. £16m in transfer fees and £21.4m in wages.
All players have been told new contracts will not be re-negotiated until the relegation fears are over.
Relegation to the Championship would be a disaster.
Owen (talking to the Evening Chronicle): "There have been no talks on either side about a new deal and nothing has been mentioned about my contract.
"I don't want this interpreted as being a snub on either side, it is just that there are more important things to sort out at the moment than mine or any other player's new contract, and that is making sure we stay in the Premier League.
"But if or when the club want to talk to me, then I am prepared to talk. I am still only 28 and I feel I still have a lot of years of football left in me."

In fairness to Owen he's deserved it.
On a side not does anyone have the website address of the depressed Geordie fella who rated every game in terms of vultures? I've not read it since Keegan was appointed and i fancy a good laugh.

Absolutely :handshake:
Newcastle hasn't lost that much in wages. They have got most of it back from the FA and insurances. I think most people forget that when a player gets a long term injury. The clubs won't lose that much.
If thats the case, imagine how costly it is to insure Owen against injury - must be a million or two a year at least! :haha:

who would sell insurance to newcastle to cover michael owen getting injured, crazy!

They probably pay a certain amount for the whole squad, not player specific.

But each individual in the squad and their injury history will be taken into account if that's the case, plus what they pay in wages. Either way it ain't good for the Geordie bottlers. :)
I'm with BFG. Insurance companies aren't in the business to lose money, I'd imagine "high value" players will have their own insurance policies.
I would have thought that's the case too mate. It may be a combined premium but it will be judged on an individual basis.

Wasn't there major rows going on after his first injury when Fat Freddie was around - think FA only contributed £1m to his wages despite them paying him 5 times that figure over the same amount of time (not including his depreciation in value as another year closer the end of his contract)
As has been said already, insurance companies don't often lose money - even if they did pay out, you can be sure their premiums went up next time their renewal came around

funny stuff
Do you think Owen asking for more money is his way of trying to get Newcastle to release him?
Who'd take Owen now?
I can't see another club in the Premiership willing to gamble £100,000+ a week wages on him.
Wouldn't surprise me if he retired sooner rather than later.
Think he still needs an obscene income to help with his stables, judging by that SKY documentary last year. I got the impression that he'd sunk (and needed to sink) a hell of a lot of cash to get it to a level he wanted.
apparently it was made up, the mail had to apologise today...
