Walcott and Wheater are also included..
No doubt people will go mad about Wheater but he's had a rock solid season.
Who's Wheater ?
Plays for Boro
Plays for Boro
Never heard of him.
I dont get why Beckhams been included this time. He still hasnt played any competitive football since before he was dropped last time.
Never heard of him.
It's his first season as a regular. He's about 6'6 - a big, bruising, dominant centre half.

He's good. Not a fan of Boro but I admire them for bringing through a lot of local talent.

He's a good player and it's always worth looking at whether lads like him swim or sink when surrounded by better players.

Him and Huth would be like the russian mountains!
I actually quite like Boro this year. Their striker purchases have been pretty crap but they try to play decent football, have a lot of local players and their fans don't have delusions of grandeur.
Not seen enough of Wheater to judge whether he is worthy of a place but I think it is good that Capello is using this early part fo his reign to look at a variety of options.

They’ve played together quite a few times and they’re a fearsome physical prospect. Saw them at Mansfield in the Cup and they hoofed lumps out of Michael Boulding.

Back to Beckham; strange decision - he can't be match fit, which was the reason given for not including him last time out.
fair play to wheater - he has looked solid this season and he is a huge bastard

I think the point is he wasn't playing at all last time - merely training with Arsenal.
Now he's playing a lot of games - albeit pre-season friendlies.
He's a fit lad anyway. Don't see the big deal myself.

I think Capello just wants to get the 100th cap out the way so he can be seen to have done the right thing. I guess he wanted his first friendly to contain the players and specifically those he might want as captain without the whole Beckham thing over anyones head.
He also spoke about the squad last time not having the right mentality yet - maybe he wants Beckham there as a player he knows is willing to fight for a place and who can give an example to the younger players.

ay just been discussing this in work - imo it's to give him his 100 caps and then they can bin him off and he can enter the hall of fame

He has been quite impressive this season and seems like a nice lad too.
As for Beckham, its no great surprise, Capello is a bit of a fan of him from their time at Real. I did think he would give him a miss for this squad though and include him in the squad for the USA match.
In all honesty we dont have a wealth of top quality options for the RM slot.

Let him get his century, then see how we go.

He certainly can't be in the squad on merit. Hopefully it's a PR exercise to give him his 100th cap and then close the book on him.
He's been a great servant but the MLS is Championship standard at best. It's time to move on.
I think Beckham has earned the chance over the years to get his 100th cap. So get it done and then start blooding the younger players like Bentley.

I think if he was to feature, he will play in the same role he played at Real. He will play in the 2 of the 4-2-3-1 as he doesn't have the pace to run down the flanks. In this role, he can be the Xabi meaning he doesn't put the tackles in(Hargreaves can do that) he simply distributes the ball out.

I think hes shit in that role and I would rather play Hargreaves and Barry before him. You cant play someone in that role that doesnt have to put the tackles in. Xabi gets plenty of tackles in. No room for passengers in that position IMO.

What I am trying to get at is that Beckham will be the more advanced of the two, but not by much. I think he can play that role. He showed for Real he can and I doubt he will start against France, a mere cameo appearance for the last 10-15 minutes is all Capello will give him to carve open tired defences with through balls and so on.

Agreed. Beckham seemed to think that right-side of midfield was somehow beneath him and that he was destined to play in the middle.
Why?
He is (was) a fantastic right-sided midfield player and a shit central midfielder. He isn’t disciplined enough and nor is he intelligent enough. He was largely pants there for Real which is why he was in and out of the team and ended up getting binned.
Because I'm bored:
James
Richards Terry Ferdinand Bridge
Hargreaves Huddlestone
Bentley Gerrard Joe Cole
Rooney

He was a pivotal part of Real winning the title last season. The second half of the season, his performances were back to usual self. He wasn't sulking or anything. Very professional.
i'd swap huddlestone - he has talent but he ain't there yet - who for tho i don't know

Like I said - 'largely'. He did well in fits and starts but for the most part was pants.
His professionalism has never been in doubt.
And, one for bobbyfallon and all the other know-nothing Crouch-bashers. I see that dumbarse Capello has picked Crouch AGAIN despite having barely kicked a ball since his last England performance. :haha: :haha:
My mistake, I thought Huddlestone was in the squad. Make it Gareth Barry then.

Wes Brown ahead of Micah Richards?!

Wes Brown ahead of Micah Richards?!
Richards is injured :handshake:
Christ, I really havent been paying attention. Right then, from the current squad, this is my 'Inoffensive XI' i.e a team I could watch and support without (m)any reservations:
James
Johnson Wheater Upson Bridge
Barry Jenas
Bentley Gerrard Young
Agbonlahor

Upson? Why? He isn't anything special. I would be happier with Woodgate there or a fit King.
King isn't in the squad and I don't like Woodgate's hair.
i dont understand why he has eaned the 100th cap. or that giving him the 100th cap is the right thing to do.
Every cap should be on merit. Ie you are playing well for your club. or you are known to play well and deliver the good for England.
To my mind quite a few of bekchams caps where undeserved. so he should be happy with 99 and not think that because he is well known he deserves another one.

You're right, of course.
But if it puts an end to the media circus and draws a line under Beckham's England career I say get it over with.
there will not be an end too the media circus around him for quite some time yet.
I'm sure we'll still be treated to stories about how he came on for 5 minutes and put in a good pass against the Toronto Titans or whatever but it might calm down a bit. It'd help if Bentley made the position his own though.
i hope it calms down.
there is plenty of better players so its time for us too move on.
