View Full Version : Why we haven't signed a Right winger
Would it be fair to say that we have really fucked up in our efforts to sign a right winger - If we are honest I'd say we have needed a good right mid for about five years, but have been desperate the last two years.
I can't help thinking that we shot ourselves in the foot with this one by announcing last summer that our priority is to sign a right winger. To me it showed how desperate we were and as a result everyone we have looked at we have just been priced out because other clubs know how desperate we are.
We are now at least twelve months down the line and are no closer to signin anyone despite being linked with all kinds of people for the right. I'd appreciate Rafa wants the 'right(geddit) man' for the job but we're not in a position like Chelsea were we can just sign who we want.
Anyone else feel like we're not going to sign one:wall:
So far these are playes I can remember us being linked to,

I think we have been very unlucky. ALot has to do with funds aswell, which we cant blame Rafa for.
About Rafa saying we need a right winger, I dont blame him for that either lol, anyone that knows anything about football would have known that.
I think we will sign Alves from Sevilla this summer, i know it has gone quiet, but that fact that rafa has not come out and said that we are not interested anymore because he is too expensive tells me that rafa will give it one more go, and that should be enough i think. If it fails i think Pennant will join. We also have young anderson coming through, who has great pace and is a good crosser of the ball, so i think one addition on the right should be enough.

I think it'd be worth waiting until the transfer window closes before declaring it a disaster. FWIW I think we'll get at leats one right sided player this time, if not 2.
I take your point though, we haven't had a really good right winger for a long while. In fact we haven't had a really good winger of any sort for a while. Nearest thing in recent memory is Mcmanaman I suppose.
Looking forward to seeing Gonzalez on the left though
Yeah hope Speedy lives up to hype -
I just feel with a current history in trying to sign a right mid it's going to get dragged out for a good few weeks before we either give up or the selling club fuck us off
Liverpool have been the busiest of all the premiership clubs this summer. Granted we need a RW but if the right player at the right price doesn't come along I don't think Rafa will sign anyone just to fill the gap. It's clear he wants Alves and if the rumours are true then Pennant is his back up but if both Seville and Brum start playing silly beggers then I think Rafa will wait even longer.
When he was at Valencia he went one summer not signing anyone because the right players at the right price didn't come along. He's a very shrewd man and although I'm sure he would like more money I very much doubt he would ever pay over the odds for a player unless he really thinks he worth it.
Anyway - :whatever:
I agree he won't pay over the odds, in fact I'm glad he won't. What point I was trying to make is, if he hadn't made it so obvious how desperate we were for a right mid we would have probably signed one by now for the right price.

Not sure that follows really.
I think the fact that Gerrard played on the right last season makes it pretty obvious to other clubs that we want/need a right RW. I don't the the fact that Rafa said he wants a RW makes an difference to the selling clubs. If Liverpool wanted to sign another goal keeper for example as soon as they approached a club to buy a goal keeper I presume it would automatically alert other clubs that Liverpool are after another keeper and it doesn't mean they will bump their price up (I hope that makes sense because it doesn't to me).
Anyway - :whatever:
to be honest, I've just read through my posts and Im lost myself
I agree :crackoff:

to be honest, i think we need a right winger desperately so that we can utilise Gerrard in his best position in the middle of the park. i agree though that we haven't had a decent RW since mcmanaman. Since then we've had Smicer, Barmby, Murphy, Diouf, Nunez, Garcia all playing down the right and none of them were natural right midfielders, probably all better further infield, and naturally they tended to drift infield during games leaving gaps down the right of our midfield and making it difficult for our right backs to push too far forward for fear of leaving a massive gap at the back ready to exploit.
Hopefully we'll get either of pennant or alves and we'll have our first natural right winger in a long time.
oh and by the way, the discussions at this site compared to other sites are so much better (no one smily comments, bowing or sarcasm) much easier to contribute to. well done admins!

We should sign George Osbourne, would make a terrific one and he's still young.

I was thinking about this today so I was glad to see it bumped! We could be in for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, ourselves and Arsenal or both in for him so we'll see how that one goes.
Santi Cazorla of Villarreal is a possibility as well. If its true that Pepe Reina has recommended him to Kenny then there's always a chance it might happen. Pepe must get a good look at him in training with the Spanish squad so is probably as good a judge as any scout? Apparently he can play on either wing as he is ambidextrous, I suppose that could mean he truely has two good feet to REALLY be able to play both sides, could be a good signing? I've never seen that much of him to be honest but I like the sounds of him, and hell, any player that gets to make first team appearances in the Spanish side must be of pretty high quality!
I'm sure were getting close to seeing the end of the transfers saga as far as the Brits go..I think everything will be tied up from that point of view by the time the European window opens... and things might just get a little bit interesting then...

Maybe the emergence of Kelly and Flanno at RB means we don't need to buy a new RW and already have one at the club in GJ

I think we should ban right wingers from our team. Liverpool FC should have a team composed of left wingers.
we dont have any of them either

Henderson plays on the right
You know what? I got sucked into this one forgetting about all the arguments I've already had defending the signing of Henderson because he is primarily a right winger!!
He was brought through as a right winger but ended up playing in the middle because of Sunderland's injury problems...
Too much time on forums... starting to drive me round the bend! :o
