Premier League - Mourinho: Drogba is a diver
    Eurosport - Tue, 21 Oct 16:33:00 2008

Jose Mourinho has branded his former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo 'divers'.

The ex-Chelsea manager said the pair were among a number of Premier League stars who cheat to win free-kicks and penalties, also pointing the finger at Liverpool's Fernando Torres and Robin van Persie of Arsenal.

Mourinho repeatedly defended Drogba from accusations of diving during his three seasons at Stamford Bridge, but admitted he only did so to protect one of his players.

"I am no longer Chelsea manager and I don't have to defend them so I think it's correct if I say [Didier] Drogba is a diver," said Mourinho.

"[Cristiano] Ronaldo, Fernando Torres , Robin van Persie are the divers who won more penalties during the last four or five years."

Despite naming the Premier League's worst offenders, Mourinho said diving was less prevalent in England than in other countries because of a stronger sense of fair play.

"English football criticises divers. In England, coaches teach the kids how to play a game of football but in Italy, Spain and Portugal, coaches teach the kids how to win a game," he said.

"I hate diving, but I'm not happy if a player is kicked by somebody in the box and he tries to remain standing. It's very, very rare a referee gives a decision if the player doesn't go down so I tell players not to be naive, but to be fair."

****s sake. Torres my arse. I can't even think of a penalty we've won due to a foul on Torres. What a ****ing gob****e.

He's right about the others though.

I know, it takes the piss esp with the treatment Torres gets week in week out from defenders.

But unless i've misread the article, he is basically admitting that he is full of ****.

Thing is though he is the Inter coach and everybody at Inter believes that Matarazzi was unfairly sent off because of Torres last season.

        He's a complete ****** though

From the ex-manager of Porto. At the time possibly the greatest collection of cheating, diving shower of arse gravy ever to grace a European field.

Is the right answer. If I'd have been a Celtic player in the UEFA cup Final I'd have fell right into their hands and knocked out Deco, the cheating little ****ing ponce.

It's just gamesmanship from his part guys, no reason to get over excited with what Mourihno says. I like him as a character. Highly entertaining and makes me laugh.

The thread title is a bit predictable though. So many times I've seen the same one and each time I think it's the initial thread but it's not. We should create a 'Maureen at it again' tracker thread as from now on.

Nah, gamesmanship is one thing but to call Torres a diver is just a cunts trick. He gets buffeted from start to finish and rarely moans about it.

Matarazzi's sending off was certainly questionable.

He's right there tho, a player who tries to ride a tackle instead of going down under the challenge is less likely to win a penalty, even tho they are both fouls.

and that is one reason to why it's a lot of play acting. Another reason is that a player like Messi would be out injured most of the time if he didn't play act sometimes.

The players need to get more protection from the refs. The FA must also start to deliver longer punishments for OTT tackles. 10-15 game bans should have handed out a few times this season, in some cases even longer than that.

You can take the Guthrie tackle for example. A one year ban should have handed out, not three games.

The mentality of the refs need to change. I would rather see a lot of yellow/red cards and still have the chance to see the best players play instead of allowing tough tackles with the result that the top players is out injured.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.
