Arsenal actually DONT have money to spend

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood admits the club cannot afford to spend big during the January transfer window.

The Gunners were expected to enjoy a New Year splurge as they look to add some experienced faces to their impressive crop of youngsters.

However, despite being linked with numerous top names, it would appear that new recruits will be thin on the ground.

Arsene Wenger has already seen his side slip out of title contention in the Premier League this term, but will not be handed a financial war chest in an effort to resolve the club's problems.
    Sensible

"I don't think there is a lot of money anywhere," Hill-Wood said in the Daily Star.

"One has got to look ahead - in the future there is probably not going to be much more money coming in.

"We have got money, but I am not sure we are going to spend it. We've got to continue to run the business in a sensible way.

"It may sound boring, but we are not going to rush out and spend fortunes on people who won't help us achieve anything better than where we are at the moment.

"Arsene has a lot of young, talented players at the club and I think he will probably give a chance to one or two of them."
After all the talk about Wenger having '£30m' to spend but apparently being too stubborn to spend it, i think the truth is starting to emerge. That big bowl is hanging around Arsenal's neck and will do for years.

Feel a bit sorry for Wenger.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

They're paying off their debt at an healthy rate, haven't sold out to mercenary owners and have a nice new stadium.

They may be temporarily outside the top 4, but let's not feel too sorry for 'em. Long term they're looking stronger than most.

Thats why Wenger deserves to be praised and people need to lay off him a bit. I have been saying for ages that despite Arsenal struggling on the pitch at the moment, they are building for the future. They have an amazing stadium which they are continuing to pay for and in a few years time they will be 1 of the most powerful teams in the world. Self-sufficient club, thats impressive, 5 years from now they will be a financial powerhouse

If they miss out on Champions League it could set them back big time, could see a couple of big names moving to balance the books if they do miss out.

That's the thing they have taken a huge risk by basically banking their future on the fact that Wenger can and will produce a string of teams made of cheap young players and still at least qualify for the CL without major expense.

He has in many ways done an excellent job but at the same time the management structure at the club including Wenger have to accept the difficulties in the way they have chosen to proceed. This season has shown what previous seasons have hinted at - that the PL is getting better and as such trying to compete while also maintaining other ideals is getting harder. I think the lack of experience and one dimensional tactical approach of Arsenal are making things harder for them. Last season the team was growing and had started to see when, for example, a long ball is better than their traditional short sharp passing. The loss of Hleb, Flamini and Gilberto along with their injury problems has hit them hard.

I've always suspected that the secret war chest was a myth although I assumed there was more money than the current quotes would indicate. Having said that only a few weeks ago Fergie was saying that United wouldn't be spending this window.

Then again, it could just be a smokescreen, to prevent the situation City find themselves in.
              Oh I don't know.
