View Full Version : Team of the season so far

We're just over half way through the Premier League season.

This got myself and a few mates thinking about who the best players have been so far.

This year has been unusual as there have been no real stand out performers like Torres, Ronaldo, Adebayor and pre Christmas Fabregas last season. I think this is a reflection of how unpredictable the league has been this year in that no one player or team has really made their mark on proceedings. It was actually a bit of a struggle to come up with players for a few positions - left back in particular but we eventually decided on the following.

----------------------Reina--------------------------

Boswinga--------Vidic--------Hangeland-------Lescott--

Ireland----------Alonso--------Gerrard--------A. Young--

----------------Anelka----------Robinho--------------

Thoughts?

personally, i'd stick with that bar gerard out for agbonlahor and have a 4-3-3 formation.

We had tried to fit Agbonlahor in as he's been good but he ended up being the 12th man.

I think you've got that pretty much right so I've gone for a team coposed of the leagues lesser lights or newcomers that have impressed me this season:

----------------------Turnbull--------------------------

Ilunga--------Turner--------Hangeland-------Pantsil--

Belhadj---------Geovanni--------Denilson--------Reira--

----------------Zaki----------Bednar--------------

P.S. I know certain players are slightly out of position by the way.

Other than the fullbacks I think the Banana picked good selection. Lescott I've not seen stand out and after a great start I think that Boswinga has been very average. Not that off the top of my head I can think of anyone who deserves to take their places mind. Rafael at United maybe.

Other players deserving a meantion.
Fletcher at United has been shockingly good all things considered.
Like pablo I think Denilson has been good (although Wenger has not managed to get a balanced CM partnership this season).

As I said it was very difficult to pick players in some positions as there have been no outstanding performers this season. Lescott was picked at left back for the simple reason that he hasn't been rubbish this season unlike other high profile left backs who were also under consideration.

I assume you mean Fletcher rather than Ferguson for United. I agree that he has been very solid for them - probably their most consistent player this season.

I'm not a fan of Denilson - he has had a good run in the Arsenal team this season. He hasn't done a great deal wrong but in my opinion that's because he hasn't done a great deal full stop.

I think any team of the season so far should have a couple of Hull players in.

Which ones?

Not sure where the slagging off of Bosingwa has came from, I think for a first season he's looked class, even if they overspent to bring him in. Would love him as our RB with Arbeloa at LB.

I think you could make a decent case for Michael Turner and to a lesser extent Geovanni. If I had picked subs I might have put one on the bench.

I think his passing has been really accurate and since Fabregas has been out and he has been allowed to get forward more he has often looked a real danger IMO. I think part of the problem for him not standing out has been that he was too often played deeper than he would play naturally, covering behind Fabregas.

The whole point about Hull is that it's a sum of all parts and a team effort, rather than individuals who stand out.

Fair point but regardless of that you'd have thought a case could be made for one or two individuals. If not then Phil Brown would have to be manager of the season so far.

Honourable mentions would have to go to Crouch and Fuller as well I think, both doing a good job for two unfashionable sides. Same goes for Danny Murphy, captaining Fulham to an admirable position so far.

Brown would have a good case, but i still think they're not safe.

Tempted with Reina but Schwarzer in a poorer team has conceded very few goals. Thought Sami deserved a mention as I can't think of any left backs so I decided to play Hangeland out of position :)
