View Full Version : IF Rafa goes, should we get Ramos?

There there lots of stories going around about Rafa's future, most of it seems to be tabloid rubbish, but you never know...
Anyway if he does go who should we bring in? I think Ramos would be perfect for the job. He's Spanish, respected by spanish players, he knows how to get the best out of players and he now has experience of the prem.
I think Spurs made a huge mistake in letting him go, they didn't listen to him regarding players he wanted to sign and he struggled to implement his training ideas...At Madrid he's been allowed to do his own thing and they have won 10 out of the past 11 games...
He only has a 6 month contract and the Spanish press seem to believe that whoever is elected as the new club president will want to bring his own man in...
Just to be clear I don't want Rafa to go, but if he did (and Real Madrid would be a possible destination) I think Ramos would be the perfect replacement.

Yep I think you've made a good point here. The fact that he did so well in England with Tottenham shows that he could do a great job for us. He was so good, Tottenham had to let him go.
It would be a huge step backward to replace Benitez with Ramos IMO.

I don't think you can judge him on what happened at Spurs.
You had Levy signing whoever he liked, not listening to what the manager was saying, selling players Ramos didn't want to sell and there was a language problem. At Liverpool half our players and backroom staff speak spanish!!
From 2005 to 2007 he was in charge of Sevilla. He won 2 UEFA cups, the european super cup, the spanish cup and the spanish super cup. He also finished 3rd in his 2nd full season in charge taking Sevilla into the champions league.
Tactically he may not be as strong as Rafa (I don't know) but I think he's a better man manager, and he's beginning to prove he can handle managing a huge club.

Who would be better and why??
No, not in a million years!
There is only 2 possibilities to replace Rafa, one is the unmentionable at Inter (he will go to us or the Mancs) and the other is the Dutch Pear, his contract at Chelsea is only till the end of the season and he doesnt want to extend it.
There are others out there. I mean, how many people on here saw Rafa coming?
In Parry we trust.... :taxi:

I think the unmentionable one is positioning himself for the man u job, I read an article on newsnow last week talking about about how many interviews he's done on the scum's tv channel, whenever he's in england he seems to watch a game at the theatre of flukes and give an interview and he's always talking about how well he gets on with fergie.
Hiddink doesn't want to extend his contract because he wants to take Russia to the world cup next summer, he wants to be the 1st manager to take 4 different teams to 4 consecutive world cups..but the Russian FA have recently said they would be happy for him to do both jobs next season, maybe because Roman pays most of his wages for managing the national team...he'll either quit Chelsea to focus on the russian job until after the world cup or he'll do both jobs...
What about Rijkaard?
Yes, imagine him gobbing on Slur Alex. :haha: :haha:

What about Rijkaard?
He would be a maybe. He was only good at Barcelona when Ten Cate was there as his assistant, as soon as he left to manage Ajax, Rijkaard and Barcelona went down hill..plus he he doesn't strike me as a manager who would be in for the long haul, 4 years tops and he would move on. Rafa and Ramos both come across as the types of managers that given the right situation would stay at a club for a very long time, which I think is important..

The backroom staff section is a bit problematic as Rafa has stated that their contracts run out with his and that tight association may well mean they too will leave if he does.
His time at Spurs would put question marks against his man management skills as well.
He still looks like a manager who needs a learning curve in the PL. Is it really to our advantage to be looking for a manager who will take a season probably to get to grips with the differences in the league. He certainly never seemed to get a coherent vision on to the pitch at Spurs.
Ramos is clearly a very good manager but if we look to replace Rafa it has in my opinion to be someone with the experience of winning leagues with a big club. The Liverpool managers job comes with a huge weight of expectation and that has if anything been increased by Rafa's progressing the team to becoming closer to title challengers at last.
I guess in a lot of way (he has created a good team on a budget at Seville and won European honours) he would be a viable candidate if we had a vacancy but the fact that is true serves to emphasise to me the fact that getting rid of Rafa is likely to be a retrograde step.

You've made some good points there, I agree that getting rid of Rafa would be a backwards steps.
The backroom staff is an interesting one, I think the two most important people are Mauricio Pellegrino and Sammy Lee. I think Sammy is loyal to Liverpool not Rafa, not sure about Pellegrino, and who knows what a new manager would want? If it were Ramos I think Sammy would stay, no idea about Pellegrino..
Who would be your 1st choice dww?

ramos to us? if he comtinues to do well with madrid, it's a very significant achievement so he'd have to be a consideration but i just don't see him at lfc all the same.
can't see mourinho ever going to man utd - he's too defensive a coach for that. neither casn i see benitez going down well at real madrid for exactly the same reasons. martin o'neill is the rising star of premiership coaches/managers. and utd will be after him i'd say.

The Sammy point is almost certainly true. Although he left with Houllier and is supposed to be a big friend of Rafa - I think he would need to feel that Rafa wasn't stabbed in the back and that the club was still the institution he loved.
I really can't see a strong, realistic candidate out there to take our job. All of the people mentioned have good credentials in one way or another but equally big question marks (Mourinho - never left a legacy, poor purchases, lack of dignity, Rijkaard - did well but had a strong coaching staff he fell out with and the success seemed to go with them, had a top team when he got there so again no evidence of team building, Hiddink - would take the Chelsea job if he wanted to be a PL club manager). The only person I like above his faults is Capello and he is tied to England.
I don't watch enough Spanish football to really judge him but Manuel Pellegrini (is it?) at Villareal is always talked of highly and has achieved sustained success at a 'smaller' club but probably not won enough to be a really outstanding candidate.

It will be interesting to see what happens after fergie retires, he's been around for so long and had such a big impact that they need to either promote from within (like we did when shankley quit) or bring in a huge personality...they don't have anyone to promote so that leaves a big personality, I think mourinho is one of very few choices for the scum, if they don't get the right man they can only go downwards, would he play more attacking football with the players they have? who knows..
Not sure about o'neil, I get the impression he couldn't handle the massive pressure that he would be under if he joined us or the scum

I don't know much about him, just looked him up in wikipedia, he's won cups and league titles for several teams in south america, in Argentina, Ecuador and Chile (where he's from).
At Villaareal he's won the intertoto cup, but also done well in the league and in europe. He best results are losing to Arsenal in the champions league semi finals in 05/06 and finishing and a 2nd place league finish in 07/08 (I think).

A strong candidate! His contract runs until 2011, he's 55, a former player and qualified civil engineer!
If he's sacked then I'm done

Not a good sign...I wonder if they read the est1892 forum!!

Temporarily or long term? I'm not sure it would be a good idea. While I think he had significant problems to deal with his record at Bolton does not really suggest that he is ready to manage one of the worlds biggest clubs.

We arguably had our best spell when sammy was on the touch-line and rafa was in the stands.

short sighted
The only candidates I'd entertain if Rafa were to go (and I hope to God he does not, as that would be a disaster), would be Mourinho or Capello.
No one else is remotely big enough for the job.

A better question to ask would be why Ramos. He was well backed at Spurs and was fucking awful. I would rather have Uncle Roy back.

Nobody's better than Ramos? Is THAT what you're actually saying?
Rafa did brilliantly in La Liga too - means nothing.

would prefer Scolari - though he both would be far to expensive and prefer Brazilian players - but he is a winner!!
