View Full Version : General Transfer Rumours
If we could keep most of the tittle tattle rumours in here, unless a link becomes a recurring theme then obviously start it's own thread....
Please provide links for all rumours/articles.
Portsmouth are demanding £16m for England's Glen Johnson, with Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa all interested in the right-back. (Daily Mirror)
Liverpool are considering a bid to sign Marseille skipper Lorik Cana as back-up for Xabi Alonso, who could be sold in the summer. (Daily Mirror)

No thanks to either of these two please.
Johnson I think could be good for us, Rafa would sort his defending out eventually. But with Arbeloa there he'd be a waste of money that could be well spent elsewhere.
All I remember from Cana in our Champions League games was that he was decidedly average, random link from his agent to boost his profile I think.

I had a dream last night where a Shetland pony dressed as Roy Chubby Brown told me we'd be signing Kun Aguero and Michael Jackson to play upfront. He then danced a jig around a bottle of tomato ketchup. Then I woke up. Make of that what you will.

From the almighty http://www.football-rumours.co.uk/
santacruz will join liverpool
Yes. .Alexandre Pato is coming to Anfield. Aparently the player himself doesn't even know about it. By the way some deals are already in the making especially those exiting Liverpool. Rafa wants the excess baggage to be unloaded first and fast so that he have enough to go into the market straight after the season ends. Watch for what's in place:
Exit
1. Ryan Babel to Bayern Munich for 9.5Mil to replace Ribery whose rumoured to be targetted by SAF
2. Phillip Degen to Blackburn for 3Mil
3. Lucas to Lazio for 8Mil
4. Dosenna to Juventus for 6Mil
5. Aurelio to Villareal for 6.5 Mil
6. El Zhar to Bolton for 5 Mil
7. Itandje to PSG for 2 Mil
Total coming in 40mil
Staying
1. Benayoun new contract
2. Riera one more season to prove himself
3. Agger new contract
4. Hypia coaching staff
5. Ngog still as bit part player
6. Arbeloa one more season
7. Insua new contract
8. Pacheco promoted
9. Nemeth promoted
Coming
1. Pato deal done from Keane's tranfer
2. Glen Johnson for 7Mil
3. Albiol 14Mil
4. Downing 7Mil
5. Lennon 15Mil
Total in 43mil
Toatl 3mil spent. .this shows how shrewd Benitez can be in the dealings. All deals are targetted to be completed by 15july. Just before thier Far east training trip to Singapore. Believe it or not. .up to you!!!
:haha:
If we have another major squad overheaul then next season we are fucked. Back to square 1!!

I sort of agree but at the same time an overhaul of the squad players rather than first teamers would be fine. I'd take one or two first teamers with one or two options in attack additionally and be very pleased.
I really hope that players like Nemeth and Ngog progress but at the minute I have to say that I don't share some others faith that it is a certainty.
2. Phillip Degen to Blackburn for 3Mil
:jaw::haha:
I just had a look on Newsnow and there was a couple of rumours on there linking us to left sided players, Yuri Zhirkov of CSKA and Daniel Pjanjic (sp) of Herenveen. Zhirkov would be an interesting choice as he could cover left back and left midfield and has impressed me the majority of times i have seen him, Pjanjic (sp) has scored something like 17 times from left midfield this season.

AZ Alkmaar’s Mounir El Hamdaoui Interests Arsenal & Liverpool (http://www.goal.com/en/news/89/africa/2009/04/29/1235857/az-alkmaars-mounir-el-hamdaoui-interests-arsenal--liverpool)
The Eredivisie’s top scorer could be headed to the English Premier League next season after lifting the league title with AZ Alkmaar.
29 Apr 2009 07:40:04
AZ striker Mounir El Hamdaoui’s fine season has not gone unnoticed by the English Premier League’s top clubs. According to liondelatlas.net, he is a possible transfer target for both Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Moroccan international helped lead his team to the title with 22 league goals. The player is still at the top of the Dutch scoring charts, despite being suspended for the weekend tie against Ajax. The match featured a goal from Luis Suarez, who is now tied with El Hamdaoui as the Eredivisie’s top scorer.
The Atlas Lion will also miss the upcoming match before returning on the final day of the season, on which he will hope to add to his tally, especially as Suarez will have had one extra game to overtake him.
El Hamdaoui was one of the few bright spots for the Moroccan national team during their 2-1 World Cup qualifying loss to Gabon in Casablanca on March 28. He scored the lone goal for his country but was also denied by the post and crossbar on two separate occasions.

Apparently he is a Derby and Spurs reject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mounir_El_Hamdaoui

That Pato rumour is class. He's coming even though he doesn't know him yet.
Should someone send the poor lad the link so he knows what his future will hold?
Like the sound of Zhirkov. He's always impressed me whenever I've seen him. I could see Rafa playing him in both positions on the left depending on the opposition. He's a player I'd be very happy with if we signed him.
Football Rumours -

Silva – Sorted already??????
Barry – 7.2M
Johnson – 11M

Babel 13.5M – Real Madrid
Voronin 4M – Man City

Rafa Benitez is going to make Ryan Babel his 1st choice Right Winger next season. He has heard Ryan's complaints and agreed that he won't get better without regular 1st team football. Kuyt will provide cover for the whole of the front line. He will be given to January to prove himself. The midfield will be strengthened by the sale of Lucas with Javi Martinez his replacement, who is capable of covering for Gerrard, Alonso and Mascherano. Alonso will go nowhere unless a bid of at least £24 million will come in. Glen Johnson will only join if Arbeloa goes home and Albiol will only join if Agger is sold. Watch and see.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool will sign David silva, Aguerro, Johnson, Diego and Zhirkov FACT!!!

Is Masher angling for a move?.......or a new contract
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has admitted he is unsure whether his long-term future lies at Anfield.
As the Reds continue their pursuit of Premier League leaders Manchester United, the Argentina skipper thinks it is possible he could have to move.
And while he admits he is happy at Liverpool, the midfielder knows if a club comes in with a tempting offer for his services he may have to move on.
But for now he is focused on overhauling United's lead, starting with the clash with Newcastle on Sunday.
"For now the main thing is to try to win the league and then I will have to think about what I am going to do but I am good here," he told Sky Sports News.
Tough
"I can't say anything bad about Liverpool as a city or as a club because they were great with me but obviously you never know what is going to happen because if some club can come here with a good offer and the club say 'ok you have to go' then I will leave - you don't know."
With the Red Devils three points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand and time running out fast, Mascherano believes it will be tough for his side to overhaul the leaders but has vowed to keep up the pursuit.
"We have chances to win the League but it is not easy (it) depends on United so we have to win all the games while waiting for United to drop some points.
"We are in a race but it is difficult now; they are in good form but we know they have some difficult games so maybe they can drop some points.
"The most important thing is to try to win all the games for us. If we can win all the games then maybe we have a chance but if we cannot win (them all) then it will be difficult."

Neither really, he's just telling it like it is. He wants to stay but understands that its up to the club, if they choose to sell him, he would have to move on. Nothing wrong with saying that. Fact is though that there is no way we'd sell him as he's one of the best players in the world in his position.
Any other conclusion made from those quotes is predicatable media spin.
Aye, although someone (Elvoz maybe) was saying the other day that a rumour is doing the rounds that Mascher's wife isn't happy. I really hope that it isn't so and the fact that the mainstream media haven't reported anything is probably a good sign.

When I saw the interview on SSN this morning, it came across to me that he wouldn't be too bothered by a move.
I love Mascherano but why would he say anything like this unless there was something going on?
I don't expect a player like Mascher will be here long term. 2 more years tops IMO before he wants to go to Italy or Spain, even if we were winning the league every season. I just think it is in Argentinian players nature to want to play in Spain or for Inter. :D

So you actually saw him say this stuff then? Or where they just showing the quotes?
I think you can never read too much into this stuff anyway, but I've always thought he seemed very comitted to Liverpool and felt he owed a debt to Rafa for saving his waning career.

Angers defender Manga tells Arsenal, Liverpool to wait
01.05.09 | tribalfootball.com (http://www.tribalfootball.com/angers-defender-manga-tells-arsenal-liverpool-wait-241909)
Angers defender Bruno Ecuélé Manga isn't ready to make the jump to Europe's biggest clubs.
The 20 year-old has been watched by Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid in this season's Ligue 2 competition.
Asked about the interest of such huge clubs, Manga told Foot Mercato: At the moment I do not have the answer. Today I'm young and I need to play.
"But if I go to play elsewhere, I won't leave to be a substitute. For now, I have extended my contract until 2012 and I have not spoken with my club about any of this."
Standard Liege's M'Bokani makes 'come and get me' plea to Man Utd, Liverpool
01.05.09 | tribalfootball.com (http://www.tribalfootball.com/standard-lieges-mbokani-makes-come-and-get-me-plea-man-utd-liverpool-241916)
Standard Liege striker Dieumerci M'Bokani has made a 'come and get me' plea to Manchester United and Liverpool.
The 23 year-old has enjoyed an exciting season in Belgium and has been watched by both United and Liverpool scouts as part of a brief to check on midfield teammate Axel Witsel.
M'Bokani declared: "Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, they are my favorite clubs. And I think I have enough talent to play in one of these three clubs.
Guardian Rumour Mill (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/may/01/football-transfer-rumours-roque-santa-cruz-arsenal)
Take, for example, Roque Santa Cruz. Having just looked it up on our newspaper archive search tool, the Mill can reveal that the Paraguayan hitman was first linked with Manchester City in 2007, before he even signed for Blackburn. Just this January City bid £20m for him and were told it wasn't enough. This summer Rovers are likely to drop their asking price but City don't care – they're not interested any more. But they've rather taken a fancy to Valencia's David Villa, whose £35m price tag shouldn't be too much of a problem, and they might pop over to Madrid and snap up Arjen Robben while they're in Spain.
Arsenal, on the other hand, will be very interested indeed. With Emanuel Adebayor's move to Milan likely to be resurrected Arsène Wenger will be in the market for a striker and Santa Cruz is top of their hitlist. According to various media sources this morning, Arsenal will sign him for £10m or for £12m, and they may or may not offer Nicklas Bendtner as some kind of sweetener. They also may face competition from "Tottenham and possibly Liverpool", or maybe they won't.
Liverpool might have already splashed their cash on Carlos Tevez, who is no longer wanted at Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson, you see, wants to spend the £30m the Argentinian would cost on Karim Benzema instead. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also sniffing round the French ace.
....
Another popular French defender is Newcastle's Sébastien Bassong, linked with a £9m move to Arsenal. Cheaper, younger, but less likely to play in anyone's first team for a few years is Liverpool's 16-year-old centre-back Andre Wisdom, who might get a tasty offer from Chelsea, Arsenal again or Manchester City again before he's old enough to sign a long-term deal at Anfield.

Liverpool summer plans consist of £50million and TWO players
01:00 PM 01 May, 2009fansfc (http://www.fansfc.com/story/10549.html)
Rafael Benitez’s summer shopping list for Liverpool Football Club is pretty straight-forward.
Reports suggest the Spaniard will hand his board a list containing just two players when he takes a well-earned summer break in June, and he expects both to be at Anfield next season.
It may come as little surprise to discover both of these targets are Spanish and both are at Valencia, who admit David Villa and David Silva could be sold to ease their financial plight.
“The fans know that we will do all we can to keep them here, but we cannot rule anything out because of our financial situation,” Che chief Fernando Gomez said. “We have to put the future of Valencia first.”
Reports in Spain suggest Benitez wants to land them both for £50million, but considering the price for Villa is in the region of £40million and Silva £20million, this may be a tad ambitious.

So Villa + Silva are rated by Valencia at £60 million and we're allegedly offering £50 million. LOL, hardly a world of difference there, specially as Valencia are struggling for cash and offloading both in one go would work out well for them in the short term.
Barry as backup instead of Leiva would be brilliant. Alonso will need to keep working his socks off to keep his place which suits us. Don't need a right back nor a hopeful punt on Negredo, look what happened last time. Would love Joe Cole if that was even half true.

Liverpool to challenge Man Utd for €70m striker?
Liverpool's hunt for a new striker to partner Fernando Torres may see them challenge Manchester United in the transfer market, as both Premier League clubs eye Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Inter Milan striker was once the subject of a €70m bid from Real Madrid, according to his agent, Mino Raiola.
The 27-year-old Sweden international joined Inter from Juventus for €12m in 2006, so that amount is a more realistic price for the hotshot.
Reds leading Suarez chase
Liverpool are leading the chase for one of European football’s brightest attacking talents, the Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez. The talented frontman currently tops the Dutch scoring charts for his club Ajax and is one of the few plus points in a disappointing season for the Amsterdam giants.
Suarez has been playing in Holland for the past three seasons and has consistently scored goals whether playing on the flanks or just behind the main striker. However, this season has been his best so far after scoring 22 goals in 31 league appearances (30 starts). Eight of those 22 goals have come via the penalty spot. Despite the Uruguayan’s best efforts, Ajax are 12 points behind leaders AZ and four behind 2nd placed FC Twente meaning they will not qualify for the Champions League next season.
Ajax’s failure to qualify has led Suarez to urge the club to bring in new recruits. He said, “It would definitely be useful for Ajax to sign some quality players. It’s up to the coach to decide on which position we need to strengthen the squad. However, we could use some physically strong players in my opinion.”
“I’m extremely disappointed that we failed to qualify for the Champions League once again. I need to play at top level in order to keep improving as a player.
“Nevertheless, missing out on Champions League football is not just bad for me, but also disastrous for the club. Ajax have to wait yet another year to play at the highest level.”
Liverpool may well be the club that provides the Uruguayan with the ‘highest level’ of football required as Rafa Benitez is a keen admirer. The player’s versatility would also interest the Spaniard who is looking to strengthen his squad significantly this summer and Suarez’s comments suggest he may well be eyeing a move away from the Amsterdam Arena.
Heerenveen star admits Anfield appeal
Heerenveen forward Danijel Pranjic has revealed he would be interested in a move to Liverpool.
The 27-year-old Croatian winger - who has 20 caps for his country - has been in dazzling form for the Dutch side this season, netting 16 goals in 29 league games.
And although both Real Betis and Sevilla are believed to be interested in securing his services, the Croat has admitted the opportunity to team up with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard at Anfield could prove too good to turn down.
“I still don’t know [about next season], that is a difficult question to answer,” he told Omroep Friesland
“I have to wait until the transfer period and then I will see. In Croatia, every newspaper called me and I was live on television and they heard something about Liverpool but I cannot say anything about it.
“It was in the newspaper that is all I know. Yes of course [it would appeal to me].”

Benfica plan to open talks with Liverpool over a deal for goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri.
Benfica coach Quique Sanchez Flores has already confirmed their interest in the Brazilian, who has played second fiddle to Pepe Reina at Anfield this season.
The Portuguese giants hope to land Cavalieri for around £2 million.
Nikolay Mihailov may still have Liverpool future
Nikolay Mihailov may have a future at Liverpool.
The young Bulgarian has been playing away on-loan at FC Twente this season and was expected to be permanently on his way from Anfield in the summer.
However, with Charles Itandje set to be jettisoned and Diego Cavalieri a target for Benfica, Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is considering recalling Mihailov for next season as cover for No1 Pepe Reina.

If, and that is a big fecking if, Rafa thinks he can make Zlatan a Rafa type player, then this could be the best news in years. If this player ever took his head out of his ass and started digging in and playing like he was in a team, he would be unplayable. Maybe a strong manager in the frantic physical pressure of the EPL is just what he needs. But I´m pretty sure this is just wishful thinking.

I think he'd be available at a price that would buy you a lot of skill for your money. As you say, if our club doctor could give him a personality transplant, we could be left with an incredible player who could really suit the PL. Pretty big gamble though.
I have suggested Diego Milito as a viable striker we should sign and it seems someone in the EPL is trying to sign him. Could it be us? We are in London this weekend after all. :source:
From Slysports:
Diego Milito's agent has revealed that he is currently in England holding talks with a number of Premier League clubs.
The Argentine international has long-since been a target for Manchester City and Tottenham, who both made approaches for the player last summer.
But in the close-season Milito snubbed the overtures from England when he left Real Zaragoza, instead preferring to return to his former club Genoa in a near £10million deal.
The 29-year-old - who has an outstanding goal-scoring record since moving to Europe in 2004 - is now seemingly ready to transfer to England.
Italian champions Inter Milan are also thought to be serious candidates to sign him, but agent Fernando Hidalgo has revealed that he is currently in London locked in talks.
The news is a major shock as only last month he stated that the player would be staying in Italy, as he doubted any club would meet Genoa's asking price of around £30million.
"Milito and Inter? I am in London now," he told Calcio Mercato.
"I am talking with some teams, but I cannot say which teams.
"These teams are interested."
Asked whether Milito would make a move to England, he replied: "Of course, otherwise I would not be here."
Only this week Manchester United have been credited with a strong interest in Milito after one of Sir Alex Ferguson's scouting network saw him smash a hat-trick in last week's derby victory over Sampdoria.

Yeah he does, I agree.
We're not short of goals, but i'd like to see more players who can score goals, rather than relying so much on Gerrard and Torres.
We've already seen how costly it is to have them missing for periods of time.
Gerrard and Torres are our main strike partnership so its only natural that most of our goals come from them. Kuyt has put in an excellent contrbition, similar figures to Rooney and Lampard, and Yossi is scoring regularly aswell. Levazzi stats are similar to what Kuyt has done this season, which is excellent for a wide-man.

Rafa plays a tactical football, we have a system, Rafa will buy players who will fit into this system, if a player doesn't fit in this system then he will fail (Robbie Keane) regardless of how good they are, what they cost and where they came from.

He does have a system, and one that works well.
But the system is dependant on the players he has. If we had David Villa I'm sure we'd be playing 442.

Well he quickly sold Keane and realised his mistake. Masch at right back was forced onto us really with Arbeloa out and Carra allegedly refusing to play there, and Aurelio in midfield was a one-off thing

Liverpool on verge of singing Daniel Pranjic (Mirror)
The 26-year-old left-sided midfielder, who scored 16 goals in the Dutch League this season to help Herenveen qualify for Europe, sent agent Soren Lerby to Anfield this week to discuss terms.
Lerby then flew to Holland on Friday to speak with Heerenveen and club director Yme Kuiper admitted: "We understand Liverpool is the club where Pranjic wants to go."
He will become boss Rafa Benitez's first summer signing - and be joined by Gareth Barry, who is refusing to sign a new contract.
Aston Villa captain Barry was priced out of a move last year when the Midlands club demanded £18m. However, with Xabi Alonso going to Juventus for £15m, around £10m will be freed up to land Barry.

Forget Tevez for the left side if this is the case. And I can't see him being happy playing second fiddle to Torres and Gerrard.
And £25m for a sub would be plain daft.
That Pranjic looks quite good on youtube :D Looks like he has a sweet left foot

A Rafa type player anyway. Just noticed he played left wing back for Croatia in Euro 2008. Set up 2 goals too. A winger who can defend.
Fancy him and Kuba to join this summer now.
Yuri Zhirkov on the radar too.Not the best sauce in the world mind:)
Yuri Zhirkov: Liverpool to Steal £15M ‘Russian Ronaldinho’ from Under Noses of Chelsea
Arguably the best left-back at last summer’s Euro 2008 finals was Russia’s outstanding Yuri Zhirkov. The CSKA Moscow star was in sensational form as the Russians stormed into the semi-finals on the back of a 3-1 win over the Dutch. Despite the loss to Spain a number of the Russian players impressed during the tournament though Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin received most of the plaudits. However, reports suggest Zhirkov will be the next Russian import to the English top flight with Liverpool set to steal the left-sided star from under Chelsea’s noses.
There are a number of Premier League clubs are in need of a new left-sided player and a player of Zhirkov’s class would be an excellent acquisition especially as he is adept at playing as a full-back, wing-back or as for his club side an out and out winger. Guus Hiddink the player’s national coach is reported to have instructed Roman Abramovich to sign the player with a fee of £15m the price. The CSKA star’s coach Zico has added fuel to the increased speculation by telling the Sun, “Zhirkov is a player of such high level, he would only show all his potential playing in such a strong competition as the English Premier League.
“He’d easily fit into Chelsea’s first-choice team. I don’t like to lose him, but I won’t stop his move to London.”
The 25-year-old has demonstrated his ability to both attack and defend in equal measure. Though it’s his forward foray’s that were most impressive at Euro 2008. He linked brilliantly on the left with his captain Arshavin and repeatedly got to the byline either by beating a defender through incise one touch passing or via his own pace and dribbling ability.
The talented star can play anyway on the left and but is most often used as an attacking winger for his club side. He has been dubbed ‘the Russian Ronaldinho’ in his homeland and has demonstrated his full repertoire of talents in Austria and Switzerland. Even in the 4-1 opening match defeat to Spain, Zhirkov gave Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos a hard time in the opening exchanges.
He’s now in his 6th season in the CSKA first team and has racked up 135 league appearances and scored 15 goals. He was part of the team that achieved Uefa Cup success in 2005 with a 3-1 final win over Sporting Lisbon in their home city. Zhirkov himself scored the 2nd goal in that match. He’s also won 2 Russian League titles as well as 3 Russian Cups so he’s well used to winning silverware.
Chelsea have been crying out for more attacking options and with Wayne Bridge having left to join Man City, Zhirkov would surely offer the option of covering at full-back or as competition for a more advanced role if he were to join. However, Liverpool have been reported to have made their move which would surely spell the end of Andrea Dossena’s short spell at Anfield. The dazzling Russian would add much needed competition for both Fabio Aurelio at full-back and Albert Riera on the wing.

Liverpool FC Rumour Mill - Silva would choose Anfield; Anderson on his way?; Merson backs Barry move; Kaladze move on again?

David Silva would choose Liverpool over Juventus
SKY'S Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has said David Silva would choose Liverpool over Juventus.
Responding to a question on his blog, he said: "Valencia are willing – they have to – sell the player and will want things sorted quickly, so they will probably be happy to do business with the first club to put an acceptable offer on the table. At this moment in time, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid have made a move for Silva – and if it ends up as a straight fight between Juventus or Liverpool, the player would prefer a move to Anfield.
"That does not mean David Silva is definitely on his way to Liverpool, but it does mean that there has perhaps never been a better time to try and secure the services of one of the most talented attacking midfielders in Europe. However, Rafa Benitez is going to have to play his cards cleverly as, following the initial contact, Valencia have been told that before Liverpool make a second approach, Benitez will have to offload a couple of players first."
Anderson on his way?
Liverpool have reportedly accepted a bid from Swansea City for winger Paul Anderson.
The 20-year-old has just returned from a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest, although has previously won the League One title with the Swans.
The two clubs now look set to battle it out for his signature in the summer.
Merson predicts Barry transfer to Reds
Former Arsenal, Aston Villa and Middlesborough playmaker Paul Merson believes Gareth Barry will be a Liverpool player before the summer is out.
The claret and blue skipper has been widely tipped to move to Merseyside this summer, a year after his switch to Anfield collapsed.
Having narrowly missed out to Manchester United in this year’s Championship race, Merson - who played for Villa from 1998 to 2002 - reckons they could go one better with Barry on board.
The former Walsall manager said: “I expect Liverpool to be a real force next season.
“If they get players like Gareth Barry in over the summer they could nick the title next year.”
Kaladze link to Reds renewed
AC Milan defender Kaka Kaladze has been linked with a move to Liverpool by an Italian football website.
The Georgian defender has been out of favour in Milan this season and is believed to be available for around £6-8million, with Portsmouth and Bayer Leverkusen also interested.

 :haha:
Reports coming out of Italy saying we are signing Levazzi, not sure how accurate this is but the story is starting to pick up momentum. Levazzi is an awesome player and can play in any of the 4 attacking positions. Looks like Rafa is after a player that can play anywhere upfront, saves us buying a backup stiker for Torres.

My sister-in-law lives out in Italy and her boyfriend happens to be Napoli born and bred, consequently Ive seen a fair bit of Lavezzi. He's very fast and direct with great technique, but his end product still needs a bit of refinement. He's a hero in Napoli though, they obviously love their tricky Argentinians and with such a rich chairman in De Laurentis I'm not sure they are under any pressure to sell, certainly not for less than €20 mil, which clearly would be a huge risk.
He has decent assists and goals return (similar to Kuyt), would be perfect on the left.

I agree he would be great in our system, but I'm not sure he's worth the financial gamble? It could be Babel MkII.
Liverpool's Xabi Alonso target for Real Madrid
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has been linked with a £21 million move to Real Madrid - but only if Florentino Perez is elected president.

According to the Star, Alonso's agent has been sounded out regarding a move to the Bernabeu, with Perez's camp claiming they will make Rafa Benitez an offer he cannot refuse and beat off competition for the player from the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal.
Alonso still has three years left to run on his current deal at Anfield, but his agent, Inaki Ibanez, said: "Many things could happen in the summer.
"The first is to finish the season and after that to attend to other matters. Xabi has signed for three more years and his future depends on Liverpool."
Alonso has been an ever-present for Liverpool this campaign, as Benitez's men pushed Manchester United all the way in the race for the Premier League title.
However, it was only last summer that Liverpool were reportedly willing to sell the 27-year-old and replace him with Aston Villa's Gareth Barry - a player Benitez could go back in for during the summer transfer window.
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for 20-year-old Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez, although they have baulked at the £20m asking price.
Meanwhile, Real have agreed a £21.5m deal with Wigan for winger Antonio Valencia, which includes an £18m downpayment and a further £3.5m in add-ons.
The Mail reports that Man United will have to match that fee if they are to win the race for the Ecuador international.
The money involved is an incredibly large amount and may mean that Real are finally losing interest in signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Losing Xabi means keeping Lucas, and I can't see a replacement (Ibanez?) coming in cheaply enough. So no thanks. However, raise the fee to 26+ million and we might start talking.
Liverpool FC Rumour Mill: Spurs join Barry chase, Anderson in the dark; Pranjic wants Liverpool move; Arango on target list
May 20 2009 [Liverpool Daily Post (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2009/05/20/liverpool-fc-rumour-mill-spurs-join-barry-chase-anderson-in-the-dark-pranjic-wants-liverpool-move-arango-on-target-list-92534-23677179/)]
Spurs join race for Gareth Barry
Harry Redknapp wants to sign Gareth Barry this summer, to give his Tottenham Hotspur team the experience and leadership he believes they have lacked this season.
The interest in Barry is long-standing, as is the interest in Roque Santa Cruz and Glen Johnson, and Spurs hope they will be able to tempt Barry away from Aston Villa where he has one year left on his contract.
The 28-year-old, long linked with a move to Liverpool, is thought to place the lure of Champions League football above all other considerations.
Anderson in the dark
Former Swansea loan ace Paul Anderson says he knows nothing about any reported agreed fee between the Swans and Liverpool.
It was reported that the two sides had agreed a fee and Anderson looked to be on his way back to the club, but his father Phil says the player is in the dark over what has gone on between Swansea and the Anfield giants.
"We have had no contact with the clubs," he said. "They may well have agreed something, but at this stage we are none the wiser."
Pranjic to move to Liverpool
Danijel Pranjic is ready to move to Liverpool Football Club.
Rafael Benitez is said to have made the Croatian international a top target for the summer, as he looks to fine-tune his squad for another bid for the Premier League title.
After winning the Dutch Cup with Heerenveen on Sunday, Pranjic revealed he will leave the club in the summer, and he admits a move to Anfield is on the cards.
"Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in me and everyone knows I am ready to play in another league,” said the 27-year-old. “I think I will leave for seven or eight million Euros."
Arango linked with Liverpool switch
Rafa Benitez is monitoring Venezuela international Juan Arango with an eye to a summer move, according to reports.
The left-winger currently plays for Real Mallorca and has been linked with Premier League teams in the past.
Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham were all thought to be interested, but a switch to Liverpool is now looking a possibility. Rafa Benitez is understood to want width this summer and Arango would certainly provide that.

Just got sent this, think its from Football Rumours but thought I'd share because its brilliant:
Bob here again with solid LFC news. I bought the news Torres was signing in 2007 and i have genuine noises/strong rumours coming out of Melwood.
LFC are interested in Kevin Davies of Bolton.
In Jan 09 Glen Johnston definitely signed a relegation release clause and a clause stating a certain sized bid would be automatically accepted. He agreed to stop on and assist Portsmouth avoid relegation. He received a hefty wage rise as consolation for staying in Jan. LFC are known to have enquired to the fee involved.
Rumours surrounds Aguero and Tevez. Tevez too expensive as is Aguero but Madrid enquired about Babel after the Champions League games in late 2008 and Babel has 'issues' off the pitch which has prevented his development on it. However the player i'm hearing is Maxi Rodriquez
Something is afoot with Spurs over the Robbie Keane deal as LFC didn't have to sell but Spurs wanted to buy badly, however Keane was struggling and by all accounts would have been offloaded this summer in any event. Don't be surprised if a Spurs player fills the problematic right side.
There will be quality not quantity coming at Anfield in the summer, at least 4 signings. With sales providing much of the outlay.
But remember LFC have another hefty instalment on Torres to pay this summer apparently.
The big issue with Alonso is whether he has convinced Rafa his heart and mind is in the right place. No questions as to his quality, however there was issues in the 2007/8 season where the pair fell out over the Inter Milan game and Alonso's attitude in general during that period in March 2008.

Sounds like something you could put together from the rumours that have been flying about.
I wouldn't be surprised if Rafa did go for a budget option as a striker who fulfilled the target man role actually if we were getting a top player for the three behind the striker. Davies however seems an unlikely choice.

Reds eye talented youngsters
Liverpool, 12:05, May 22, 2009
Liverpool have been linked with summer moves for young Dutch striker Luc Castaignos and French winger Kevin Gameiro.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez is in the process of identifying his targets for the close season and has sent scouts to watch several up-and-coming talents throughout Europe.
Reports suggest he is interested in Feyenoord's 16-year-old starlet Castaignos while Gameiro, 22, has caught his eye after several impressive performances this season for FC Lorient in France.
Castaignos was top scorer at the under-17 European Championships and has been linked with a host of top European clubs although some could be put off by Feyenoord's asking price - believed to be at least £3.5million.
Gameiro, meanwhile, has had an outstanding season for Lorient, scoring seven goals from midfield and has also attracted the attention of Paris Saint Germain and Marseille in his home country.

I could quite honestly believe all of that. The Kevin Davies one is a bit far fetched but as dww said, it's all based on rumblings already heard in the press.
I live in the North London area and have continually heard the Aaron Lennon rumours of him joining in the summer as part of the Keane deal. Not sure I believe it, but the rumours seem to keep going. Saw him couple of weeks back in his black Ferrari and i was tempted to have a word :D
Maxi Rodriguez is another who has always been linked, but I think that ship has probably sailed. Kevin Davies would be the interesting one for me. I think he could come in and do a job for us as a target man, but I think for his age and ability Bolton would want to much for him. I'd actually suprise myself and take him at the right price.

Liverpool scouting Dutch Under-17 international striker Luc Castaignos
In recent days there have been reports in the English and Dutch press that Liverpool have been watching highly-rated Dutch Under17-international striker Luc Castaignos.
According to a report in The Guardian, Rafa Benitez has received glowing reports about the young striker following some fine displays at the European Under-17 Championships which finished a week ago in Germany.
During the recent tournament Castaignos scored three goals, finished as joint top scorer and was one of the main attacking threats in the Dutch team that reached the final, but lost to Germany 2-1 after extra time.
Since he was moved up to the Dutch Under-17 side, the Feyenoord striker has scored 11 goals in 14 games, setting a new record. Last October Castaignos signed a new contract with Feyenoord which keeps him at the Rotterdam club until the end of the 2010/2011 season.
Alongside Liverpool’s Christopher Buchtmann, Castaignos was picked out by UEFA as one of the 10 players to watch in the Under-17 tournament: “His height, his pace, his strength and finishing ability marked him out as an outstanding striker.”
A selection of clips showcasing Luc Castaignos at the European Under-17 Championships can be seen on the video below.

I think that he maybe had some talent but he hasn't improved in ages and as a defender consistency is key and he offers none of that. Like Anton Ferdinand he appears to need someone alongside him to do his thinking for him. Basically he is a perfect Spurs player - decent but not that great.
Bramble has been much better than him this season.

On a related note I'm still gutted we didn't stump up the cash for Andy Reid & Michael Dawson when we had the chance.
And Duff. He was a 'break the bank' option for many.

To be fair he hardly played. Whether this was because he was rubbish on the training pitch, or didn't fit into the Chav system is unknown.
I think he could have been a hit, but now we'll never know. Genoa is a come down.
Nah mate, he was shit at Inter too and that is a much weaker league and its reputation for great defence is not justified. He never impressed me watching him at Porto or with Portugal either.

I'd still be upset if we let Alonso go now. The price for Silva seems lowish as well. I've never seen Martinez but I doubt he would slot in to provide the leadership and understanding with other players Xabi does. Now we have a functioning team capable of challenging I think we need to build on it rather than making alterations.
It's all very well when you have had a stable core challenging for a number of seasons like United did in the 90s until now to make surgery to the team but if you are still just getting their I think consistency, experience and stability are important factors.

That would be interesting Bobby certainly, but...
Money owed doesn't work like that, its already included in the budget.
Ie, Say we're owed £30m and our transfer budget is £30m. If we signed Johnson for £8m + write off £7m owed our remaining transfer budget would only be £15m and we would be owed £23m.
There is no way on earth our net spend this summer will top £30m. Seriously, where are we going to get that cash from? I reckon we'll do well to hit half of that + money from sales. :sigh:

id be devastated to see alonso go but it really does look like he is off. i agree, i think alonso is an integral part of the team, but if we were to get two top class players in exchange it would soften the blow for me.
id rather keep alonso, sell off the fring players and buy tevez and silva. that would do for the summer. thats a ideal world though. in fairness thats exactly where i am this morning :D

Goal.com (http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/05/28/1292034/liverpool-midfielder-javier-mascherano-denies-barcelona-link)
Liverpool's midfield monster, Javier Mascherano, has once again reaffirmed his intent to stay at Anfield, brushing off any claims that a move to Barcelona was a strong possibility.
Honouring his five-year contract with the Reds, the Argentine claims that he only has eyes for Liverpool - especially since becoming an integral part of Rafa Benitez's well-drilled midfield.
Reports stating that Mascherano is leaving Anfield has the 24-year-old slightly miffed after making it obvious on several occasions that his heart lies with Liverpool - even if the link is with the reigning Champions League title holders.
"I still have three years on my contract with Liverpool and I am happy there," the Argentina captain told TyC Sports.
"I am comfortable and thinking only of Liverpool. I don't know anything about an approach from Barcelona or any other club."
The beginning of May brought some uncertainty regarding Mascherano's future, but it is clear at this point - by his own admissions - that he is happy where he is.
Looks like Steven Ireland os off the cards (if he was ever on them)
Stephen Ireland has signed a new five-year contract at Manchester City.
The Irish midfielder has been rewarded for an outstanding season in which he won the club's player of the year award ahead of the more illustrious names.
"I never had any doubts about staying," Ireland, 22, told the club's website. "Hopefully, I'm going to be here for the remainder of my career.
"I don't see why not. I'm settled, I love the club and the fans and I don't see what's going to make me leave."
Ireland's existing deal ran until the end of the 2010-11 season, but his new agreement lasts until 2014.
At this stage last year, there were questions over his future at the club as the academy graduate seemed to lose his way under Sven-Goran Eriksson.
But he forced his way into Mark Hughes' side at the start of the season, and has never relinquished his place despite a total overhaul of the City midfield under the club's billionaire owners.
606: DEBATE
Ireland has evolved considerably from the unspectacular guy who couldn't get a game last season
newTrueBlue4life
Ireland added: "These are very exciting times. It's going to be interesting to see what the line-up will be at the start of next season and how far we can push on.
"Hopefully we can compete for the title and get back into Europe."
Hughes said: "Stephen's new contract is great news for everyone concerned. He was outstanding last season and is now one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
"He thoroughly deserves all the praise after the hard work that he undertook last summer, and I know that he is already aiming to do even better for us next season and beyond."

Boro face Johnson battle
Winger has big-four chasing him
By Graeme Bailey Last updated: 29th May 2009
Middlesbrough face a huge battle to hang onto Adam Johnson this summer, skysports.com (http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_5353867,00.html) understands.
Chelsea and Tottenham are understood to be leading the chase for Johnson, but Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal are all keeping close tabs on him, whilst Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation.
Johnson has just 12 months left on his current deal at The Riverside - and the Sunderland-born wide-man looks unlikely to put pen-to-paper on a fresh contract.
Johnson has told Boro he is keeping his options open, after he rejected their latest offer to renew his deal.
Now Johnson knows that he is being tracked by a host of clubs who are all ready to try and tempt newly-relegated Boro into selling.
Boro do no want to sell their prized assets, but their biggest summer fundraiser was due to be the sale of Stewart Downing, however that is now off until January at the earliest after he had a pin inserted into his broken foot.
And with just a year left on his current deal, Johnson will be free to join whoever he wants this time next year, although Boro will be due compensation.
However, compensation is nearly always well below market value and because of that Boro could be tempted to sell.
Johnson will take part in the European Under-21 Championship this summer, which you can see live on Sky Sports, and he will be keen to impress in Sweden.
Juventus Pushing For Liverpool Stopper Andrea Dossena – Report
The Bianconeri are keeping an eye on Dossena with a view to signing him this summer...
29 May 2009 09:34:27
Juventus are pushing ahead with plans to strengthen their defence and they are looking at Liverpool's Andrea Dossena for the left flank, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.
The report suggests directors at Vinovo have highlighted the Italian international as their next priority. Dossena has not enjoyed the best of seasons at Anfield after moving there from Udinese last year. His appearances have been limited under Rafael Benitez, leading to speculation that his future there is in doubt.
Juve are monitoring the situation carefully as they plan to strengthen their back line further. Having already signed Fabio Cannavaro, Juve would like to add some muscle on the left. Paolo De Ceglie's lack of experience and Cristian Molinaro's inconsistency has led to a decision being made in Turin that a hardened, more experienced stopper is needed.
If the Old Lady fail to land Dossena, they have Lyon's Fabio Grosso and Lazio's Aleksandar Kolarov in mind. The latter two could be hard to sign. Grosso has claimed he is happy in France, while the Aquilotti are likely to play hard ball over Kolarov.

Benfica want to sign Diego Cavalieri.
The Portugese side are interested in signing Liverpool's reserve goalkeeper. Cavalieri joined the Reds for £3.5m last Summer and Rafael Benitez will be looking to get at least his money back if he agrees to the deal.
Cavalieri's departure could mean David Martin makes the step up after impressing during his loan spell with Leicester.

Liverpool scout samba star Zezinho
by Ben Blackmore , 29 May 2009 [Setanta (http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/Football/2009/05/29/Prem-Liverpool-scout-Zezinho/gnid-54982/)]
Liverpool are scouting Brazil Under-17 superstar Zezinho, according to reports in Brazil.
Zezinho won the Under-17 Championship with Brazil, and he is currently learning his trade playing regular first team football with second division Juventude.
A technically gifted attacker with good feet, Zezinho has been attracting interest from Europe and was scouted by Liverpool during a recent match.
The Brazilian media even claims Liverpool may have agreed a deal with the club to bring the teenager to Anfield, although club president Sergio Florian firmly refutes such suggestions.
"The money is already in our account? I'm not aware of anything,” Florian told Futebol Interior.
“In particular, there is nothing, any kind of negotiation.
“I cannot speak anything more than that because, as far as I’m concerned, they were just scouting the player.”
If the reports of Rafa having a list of over 100 summer targets, the papers have got a busy summer ahead.

No Zezinho deal for Reds
Premier League runners-up have not agreed fee for teenager
Liverpool have not agreed a deal to sign Juventude teenager Zezinho, according to the Brazilian club's president.
The Reds are reported to be tracking the 17-year-old, who has impressed in Serie B, and some rumours have suggested that money has changed hands.
But while Juventude president Sergio Florian has played down rumours of a transfer, he has implied that Rafa Benitez's Premier League runners-up have been in contact regarding the midfielder.
"They (Liverpool) have already put money in the bank? I don't know anything about this," Florian told South American media.
"In truth, nothing has happened, no type of business. I can't say anything more about this because they're nothing but enquiries."
Yeah I'll wait until it's on the offal until I get excited.

Think I'll wait till he's in the first team...........
Judging by the league he is coming from I'm guessing he's gonna be in the reserves. It's going to be interestinmg to see how many young lads we bring in and how many we let go this summer. He must be the fourth or fifth reserve LW at the club now.
We need a massive cull of reserve players as well as the management one. We just don't get enough games to support a big squad.

Daninho... Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to show off (not much though, as this is common knowledge)... "inho" means small ("inha" if female name)
"aõ" (as in Valdaõ) means big...
Hope that clears things... and if not, I'm drunk and can't be arsed to make proper sense!
Nice weekend to ya all, mates!
