Italian sources suggest that Andrea Dossena's desire to leave Liverpool for Juventus will result in the Reds attempting to bring the best of Italian talent in the opposite direction.

Rafa Benitez is desperate to find a striker to play "in the hole" behind Fernando Torres and, despite his age, Alessandro Del Piero fits the bill.

The 34-year-old Italy international has been tremendously loyal to Juve, but the chance to play in the Premier League for Liverpool may be too tempting to turn down.

Liverpool will have to fork out a huge amount in wages for Del Piero, but the sale of Dossena to Juve will make him more affordable.

According to Italian sources, the details of the deal being negotiated is as follows: Dossena is valued by Liverpool at £8m, but Juve are only prepared to pay £6m if Del Piero moves in the opposite direction.

The sticking point is the terms of the deal being offered to Del Piero by Liverpool but, with £6m about to be in their coffers soon, the Reds feel they can offer the maestro a £60k per week two-year contract.

Couldn't stop laughing while reading this. Rafa is desperate to find replacement for Gerrard and wants to replace him with much older player with nice sideburns.

Next in line, Sheringham and McManaman.

Still, 19 goals in 41 appearances this season (37 starts).

That's impressive.

Del Piero was awesome, the key word being WAS.

This story smells like BS.

I have to say that my first reaction was exactly the same as yours (added to the wonderful line 'according to Italian sources' used by fansfc which doesn't lend any credibility). The idea of him as a replacement for Gerrard (or even someone to push him back to CM) is a bit laughable however after a bit of consideration I can see a sensible line of reasoning for why we might want him:

Firstly last season I suggested we needed an older player who had won things. I still think this is true. Del Piero ticks that box.

We need a player who can score goals when Torres and or Gerrard is out and according to:

Del Piero might well tick that box.

Given his age he might well be willing to spend time on the bench.

I can see him fitting into a team with Gerrard and Torres - certainly when we are chasing a goal in the last few minutes.

On the negative side obviously is the fact that older players such as Morientes and Shevchenko with obvious talent have failed to adapt to the PL on a regular basis. On balance I'm still probably against the move for this reason but there is still part of me that would love us to sign such a talented player.

would love del peiro for a season or 2, always had great movement and is a fantastic player he could definitely help the youngsters.

is he back being an italian regular now in the national team? with it being the world cup next year i am sure he will want to stay in italy and in the spotlight over there

Del Piero at LFC? Past his best and probably wouldn't hack it but I'd love to see him give it a go.

And £6m for Dossena is not to be sniffed at :D

Del Piero is Juve's legend. It's true that he isn't so happy in Torino, but I don't believe that he'll go anywhere.

Don't believe this story but would love for it to happen. Just the type of player we need.

Would be a great player to have for a couple of seasons, his age suggests he would be happy with being benched a few times which is ideal.

However he is their god and could not see him leaving.

And I don't see Del Piero leaving Juve now, not at 35. He's a legend there, great player.

will never happen!

He is a juve legend, plays regularly there and he just got one of his old teammates as manager...

Would love to see a player like him joining us, as we could use another experienced player.

One of the worst performances I have ever seen when we played Juve at Anfield. He tripped on the ball, had no pace, no guile and a lazy attititude. This would seriously be a bad signing, we don't need has beens.

:handshake: I don't believe the Premiership is where he needs to be right now, and certainly not with us thanks. If we're going with oldies, i'd rather someone like Larsson than him.

Whilst totally weakening our approach play. If this was American football and we could bring him on for dead ball situations then I'd be all for it but it's not the case.

 His approach play is one of his big strengths.

If he was willing to be a squad player for us I think he could be fantastic. Id have him and Van Nistelrooy in a flash if the deals made economic sense. They would bring that extra crucial experience that we were slightly lacking in last season.

But as there's no substance in our links to either player I suppose it's all pointless anyway :haha:

He could work out for a season maybe...

Remember Di Canio? Old chock with nice sideburns, and he was awesome.

I don't think there's any relevance in the links anyway, don't know where it came from. But Del Piero was a great player, he wasn't at his peak when we played them at the time.
