The 27 year old snooker player has lost his battle with cancer. Very very sad.

RIP Paul.

Paul Hunter has died at the age of 27 after a battle with cancer.

The Leeds player was taken into the Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield last Friday and died on Monday evening.

The three-time Wembley Masters champion was diagnosed with dozens of neuro endocrine tumours of the lining of his stomach in March 2005.

Despite chemotherapy treatment, Hunter continued to compete professionally but won only one match last season and fell from fifth to 34th in the rankings.

I have to say I didn't like the bloke initially. Thought he was a flashy c*nt, but I had nothing but admiration for him for the way he handled himself publically during his illness. I really warmed to the lad and ate large dollops of humble pie as he struck me as a very likeable and dignified bloke.

Really sad.

sad news indeed c+pd from the beeb (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/snooker/6035879.stm)

Paul Hunter has died at the age of 27 after a battle with cancer.

The Leeds player was taken into the Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield last Friday and died on Monday evening.

The three-time Wembley Masters champion was diagnosed with dozens of neuro endocrine tumours on the lining of his stomach in March 2005.

Despite chemotherapy treatment, Hunter continued to compete professionally but won only one match last season and fell from fifth to 34th in the rankings.

Hunter turned professional at the age of 16 in 1995 and won his first major title, the 1998 Welsh Open, at the age of 19.

He also won the Welsh title in 2002 and picked up the British Open trophy the same year but he will be best remembered for his exploits at Wembley.

Hunter recovered from 7-3 down to beat Fergal O'Brien 10-9 in the 2001 final and fought back from 5-0 to beat Mark Williams 10-9 in the final a year later.

He completed a hat-trick of Masters victories in 2004 when he came from 7-2 down to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-9.

Hunter's best World Championship performance was reaching the semi-finals in 2003, where he led Ken Doherty 15-9 before the Irishman stormed back to win 17-16.

Hunter would have been 28 on Saturday. He leaves a wife, Lindsey, and a daughter, Evie Rose, who was born on Boxing Day of last year.

Carried himself with a dignity that is all too rare in these shallow self centred times.

Terrible, terrible news. I thought he was recovering. I’m shocked and gutted. He seemed a top lad and a very good snooker player.

Rest in peace Paul

Very bad news. I remember finding out he had been diagnosed with cancer and he chose to continue competing, I always admired him for that. Really sad news that he died because I always hoped he would get better. R.I.P. and YNWA to a true gent.

It happens all to often that people are diagnosed with cancer and all of a sudden, thats it. Life over, they totally drop everything and give in. Takes a lot of courage to carry on with life.

bad news. Like some others, never even knew he was ill ( not a huge snooker fan ) and never really liked him when I watched him. But this is sad news indeed. Feel sorry for his poor family

Gutted about this news, my heart goes out to his very young family.

I'll just repeat some of my sentiments from 6cm, I don't know how better to explain my feelings. When I heard the 'rumours' this afternoon I just hoped they were just that - rumours. I thought that someone on their deathbed would have been instantly 'in' the media. Maybe, for once, the media used their common sense and let the family mourn.

I never really took to him as a player but he was one hell of a man in the last 18 months. It's a crazy world when you compare someone like him and someone like Alex Higgins (who started playing again today) in comparison to what they did to their respective bodies. Such a shame.

Paul was just 12 days younger than my wife is. Really brings mortality home to me.

RIP Paul.

Very very sad news. When he came back to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan in the Masters final a few yars ago it was one of the best snooker matches I've ever seen. And such a young age as well - really tragic, especially for his wife and baby.

Totally shocked by this news when I heard in on the telly last night.

Knew he wasn't well but didn't realise he was that bad, but he did fantastically well to continue in the game as long as he did. Seemed a great guy and a genuine person, just awful that such a thing has happened to him at such a young age with such a young family.

Feel terrible thinking about it now, just hope that his family and friends get through this as best they can. The snooker world will not be the same without him and will be in mourning for a long time I guess.

RIP Paul Hunter, and YNWA.

I don't want to be disrespectful but was he the one who got a blow job at half time and then went on to win the game? Or is that another one?

He claimed to have spent a mid-session interval being cheered up by his wife-to-be. He was losing heavily before the interval but came back to win.

I'm still actually quite sadden by this, and i'm not usually one not to get too involved by posthumous sentimentality. Maybe its the fact i'm around the same age, that has brought it home, or even indeed there's a young 'un without a dad. Bad news all in all.
