McAllister admits interest in taking charge of Motherwell

Former Leeds and Liverpool star McAllister admits interest in taking charge of Motherwell

By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 2:20 PM on 14th June 2009

Former Scotland skipper Gary McAllister has admitted he would like to return to Motherwell as manager.

McAllister was sounded out about the job two years ago before Well chairman John Boyle appointed Mark McGhee, who was unveiled as Aberdeen boss on Friday.

The former Liverpool player was not interested in taking over then for family reasons and amid concerns over working on a small budget at Fir Park.

But McAllister, who began his career at hometown club Motherwell before moving to Leicester in 1985, is looking to get back into management after an 11-month spell at Leeds ended in December.

The former Coventry boss told the Sunday Mail: 'Motherwell are my club and the job appeals to me.

'I spoke to the chairman before Mark got the job but we'll need to see what happens in the next few days.'
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

A bit more experience for him will be great. He's obviously an intelligent bloke so I hope it works out for him.

Good to see that guys like him who have been out of a job for a while can still get their foot back in the door.
