The French parliament has adopted a bill making it a crime to deny that Armenians suffered "genocide" at the hands of the Turks, infuriating Turkey.

The bill, which provides for a year in jail and a heavy fine, still needs approval from the Senate and president.

Turkey called the decision a "serious blow" to relations with France. It has already threatened economic sanctions.

Armenia says Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million people systematically in 1915 - a claim strongly denied by Turkey.

Turkey has been warning France for weeks not to pass the bill.

It's strange that the apparently 'liberal' Europeans have a slew of legislation outlawing speech and expression, and yet the apparently 'conservative' Americans have a law fundamentally protecting a citizens right to say anything they please.

No one is suggesting it should be forgotten but to pass a bill now for something that happened in 1915! Do you not think it's a little late? Do you not think there maybe something more current on the agenda that concerns the French than what happened nearly 90 odd years ago?

If you condemn the French for this law (which won't go through anyway I think) you have to condemn the Turks too. They forbid by law that people call genocide what they did to the Armenians. Something that IS called genocide by all modern historians.
