The final shortlist of 10 players for European Footballer of the Year award

The final shortlist of 10 players for the Ballon d'Or, the European Footballer of the Year award, has been revealed.

England have two candidates, with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney in the reckoning.

Last year's winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, now at Real Madrid, is again up for the honour, although Barcelona star Lionel Messi is considered favourite for probably the most prestigious individual prize in world football.

European champions Barcelona are well represented, with Xavi, Andres Iniesta and summer recruit Zlatan Ibrahimovic also named.

Samuel Eto'o, who moved to Inter Milan as part of the Ibrahimovic deal, is also in the running, but he is the only Italian-based player named.

Former AC Milan star Kaka, now at Real Madrid, is also up for the award, while the list is made up by Chelsea star Didier Drogba, the third representative from the Premier League.

The winner is revealed by France Football next Tuesday.

    Ten finalists:

    Didier Drogba

    Samuel Eto'o

    Steven Gerrard

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

    Andres Iniesta

    Kaka

    Lionel Messi

    Cristiano Ronaldo

    Wayne Rooney

    Xavi

            I can't believe Torres isn't on it!
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Favourite Lionel Messi was joined on the shortlist by team-mates Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who joined the club in the summer from Inter Milan.

Samuel Eto'o, who scored Barcelona's opening goal in their 2-0 Champions League win over Manchester United in May before moving to Inter as part of the deal which took Ibrahimovic to the Nou Camp, is also among the final 10.

Three players from the Premier League are in the final shortlist, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard and Chelsea frontman Didier Drogba.

The remaining places are filled by two of Real Madrid's summer signings, last year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazil international Kaka.

The winner of the award, which determines the best player in European football that year and is decided by a poll of football journalists compiled by France Football, will be revealed on Tuesday.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres finished 11th in the voting, Cesc Fabregas 12th, Ryan Giggs 14th and Thierry Henry 15th from the original 30-man shortlist named last month.

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic finished joint 16th, Andrey Arshavin and Frank Lampard joint 21st and John Terry joint 26th.

Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery only came 29th.

This is a travesty. Torres not even on that list when he's basically the best striker in world football. **** all of this, doesn't mean anything these days and is not an accurate reflection of who's the best.

Over hyped FIFA/UEFA **** sponsored event, where Blatter will probably take another opportunity of making a cock of himself together with the mother of all cocks, Christiano Ronaldo.

torres should well be up there in the top 10 shootout. i'd say him and etoo are neck and neck in being best at what they do.

Iniesta should win, but he wont. Fatboy from Old Toilet will.
