    Berger Retires

I always had a soft spot for him.

Former Czech Republic international Patrik Berger is to end his playing career because of injury.

The attacking midfielder had spells at Liverpool, Portsmouth, Aston Villa and also had a stint on loan at Stoke.

He was released by Villa before signing for Sparta Prague but has now decided to call it a day as injuries have taken their toll.

A knee problem proved the final straw for the 36-year-old, who played his last game for Sparta on 8 August.

Berger had started his career as a Sparta Prague trainee before joining their rivals Slavia Prague at 18.

A switch to German side Borussia Dortmund followed and he was then brought to England when Liverpool signed him in the summer of 1996.

Berger was capped over 40 times by the Czech Republic, scoring 18 goals.
    Oh I don't know.

I signed him for Gateshead in FM last night as I got promoted to league two.

Also signed Mario Jardel the year before. It's amazing how many players are still playing into their late 30's and 40's who you'd have thought retired ages ago. Can't remember any more off hand though.

Loved watching him play, class act. Will never forget his stunning treble against Chelsea and the predictable, but ace, tabloid headline the next morning "Hat-trick Berger"

Good luck to him in whatever he does!

                      Is he staying in football?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

He's had a crap run of injuries over the last five years.

Great player for us - scored some cracking goals and I remember having 'Berger 15' on the back of my 00/01 home shirt. One of my favourite players at the time.

                          Good luck to the lad

Loved this guy and was desperate to see him do well for us. Scored some unbelievable goals and will always be a legend in my eyes anyway. YNWA

He's had bad knee injuries all his career. I'm amazed he's not retired before now.
