Melbourne Storm stripped of 2 titles

The Melbourne Storm rugby league club have been found to have breached the salary cap and have been stripped of their last 2 grand final wins. They have also been stripped of their points for this season and no matter what they do this year on the field they can not win the title.

This is a major shock for our rugby league mad country. It's not clear as yet if players knew of the actions of the board members suspected of cheating but it seems possible that some may have been receiving under the table payments.

Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

THE NRL has stripped Melbourne Storm of two premierships, as well as any competition points this season, in the toughest punishment for a salary cap breach in NRL history.

NRL chief David Gallop has just announced the extraordinary penalty, after it was uncovered that the club paid $1.7 million to its players outside the cap in the past five years.

The Storm have been stripped of their premierships in 2007 and 2009, three minor premierships and their eight competition points this season. They will not be able to accrue any more points this season, have been fined $500,000 and must pay back $1.1 million in prize money.

This isn't the first salary cap scandal is it? Just the most severe penalty ever handed down.

That's right. The bulldogs were caught a few yrs ago and they looked odds on to win the title but were docked their points for the season.

This is a major news item here

Wasn't there one with a few clubs quite a while back (~7 years when I first came over) and they just had them get their affairs in order and issued a final warning?

I just seem to vaguely remember something.

Pretty huge punishment, Melbourne have been an absolute powerhouse the past few seasons haven't they? I really couldn't give a **** about NRL though. It seems a sport full of absolute Neanderthals.

Rugby League mad country More like rugby league mad states (NSW, QLD)

Every other state is Aussie Rules mad

Exactly the same (but they'll never bring in a salary cap will they ? )

Half the country with nobody living in them

WA covers half the country on its own though, then you have SA, NT and VIC, TAS.

We crush you NRL loving states

Its far from **** you small minded cunt.

Its a game of athleticism, speed, power, and pure brawn. Its also a very skillful game.

People argue that it isn't, but i'd give them 10 kicks on the run and see if they can perfect a nice drop punt 40 meters onto someone's chest.

I'd wager most wouldn't do it more than twice...and that's pretty much the most basic of skills in the game, apart from a handball.

Id also predict most can't actually handball properly either. Getting it spinning the right way, end over end.

I didn't dispute that it's skillful or a pretty hard game to play, just that it's **** and boring. Some people like it and some not but I think a lot of people are pretty divided on the issue from what I've seen here. It will never be popular outside of Australia anyway.

I'd rather watch a rugby league match than an aussie rules match (or gaelic football which is the original version of it).

Boring? I can only seeing it being boring if you have no idea what's happening.

"Never be popular outside of Australia"......hmm, maybe thats why so many Irish lads are coming over to play it, or why American football coaches are looking at how good we are at kicking the ball, and our tackling skills.

Its not ****, you just have no idea about it.

I'd rather watch Bolton vs Blackburn where there's a lot of kicking mate.

I never liked American Football either, think it's ludicrously **** as well.
