Always hear people say and ex pros also that it would be good if there were ex pro's as ref's as they understand the game better seens they played it.

But ive never seen anyone go for it i guess they dont have the balls to go out on the pitch in front of the camreas and do the ref's job they certainly arent shy when it comes to critiscing them.

good in theory, in reality, think about it

they've got plenty of money

its a shit job

they'd rather play golf/be pundits / buy a pub

I know yeah i was thinking that about the money and all that but i taught one of the players not top players mind but the next level down.

I imagine most players hate ref's privately and some not so privatey, can't see many players wanting to become one.

There is one in the Football League called Steve Baines, who was a very good lower league centre back in the 70s and early 80s. He's also a fucking good ref (seen him ref two games) and has a great rapport with players...he obviously knows how to handle them. But for some totally unknown reason, he keeps being overlooked by the top brass for promotion to the "big boys".

Most players these days have pushed their body and joints to the limit by the time they retire.
I don't think any of them have the motivation to keep themselves fit enough to be a referee for the comparative pittance they receive in wages.

Top players yeah, but for lower league players it should be a fairly attractive proposition. Most of 'em just drift out of the game and become van drivers. Surely a professional referee would be more appealing?

Good point. Maybe it's the system that's the problem. I can't imagine them wanting to start off in the sunday league getting paid 50p(or whatever it is) a man to ref a match and take a torrent of abuse :haha:
Ex-players who know the game could be fast-tracked, maybe a season of semi-pro followed by conference football?

Correct, but also it takes years to become a ref and most ex pros would be 40 by the time it happened.

yes they should encourage the lower league players to turn to refereeing but the FA has its head up its own arse .
some of the refs in the premier league have been shocking
riley, poll and rennie to name but three
its all politics or so it seems to me.
dermot gallagher who i thought was a decent ref ahad afucking shocker last weekend
they should be punished for this and refs from lower leagues promoted to take their place

I probably know the rules better than poll;) but it is true that it takes a long time.

I wonder what the stance would be for a player being available to ref a match involving one of his old teams.

So you'd be looking forward to Gary Neville refereeing a (any) Liverpool match in 5-10 years time?
