Manny Pacquiao set for Shane Mosley fight

Manny Pacquiao, regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, is set to defend his WBO welterweight title against Shane Mosley on 7 May.
    BBC
Philippine legend Pacquiao had sounded out lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto but settled for Mosley.
"I thought Mosley was the best draw of the three and it would do the best business," said promoter Bob Arum.

Mosley last fought in September and struggled to a draw with Sergio Mora.
The 39-year-old from the United States, nicknamed 'Sugar Shane', also lost to unbeaten Floyd Mayweather in May and has been defeated six times in 54 fights.

"I think it's a good fight. I feel that Shane is one of the toughest guys left out there right now. He didn't get up for 'The Contender' guy [Mora], but he will get up for Manny Pacquiao," added Arum.

"With Floyd, Shane had him in real bad trouble in the second round, so he's capable of doing a really good fight with Manny and Manny knows that. It's a difficult fight because Shane has speed and power."
The fight will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas at the welterweight limit of 147lb.

Mosley, who has held titles at lightweight, welterweight and light-middleweight, added: "Bob [Arum] is drawing up the contracts and I'll sign either Wednesday or Thursday."

"I know that they think I'm an old man and that Manny is going to beat me. Let them think that.
"I still have power and speed. They thought I was done before I knocked out [Antonio] Margarito, too. So they can think whatever they want. I know what I can do."

Pacquaio, 32, last fought in November, defeating Antonio Margarito to win the vacant WBC light-middleweight title, and has three losses in his 57-fight career.

I guess we will never see the fight that we all want. Which is a shame, it really would be one of the greatest fights of all time.

          Nah.

I think Sugar Shane is a little too old and slow for Pacman.

UD Pacman or late Pacman TKO due to amount of punishment taken by Mosley.

          What's your thoughts?

It's probably the safest option for Pacquiao, like you said Mosley is a ageing fighter, but he's still a big name in boxing so it'll probably be a big PPV payday for Top Rank.

I would have preferred to see Pacman v PBF but that wasn't going to happen. A Pacman v JMM rematch would have been good as well.

Aside from a fight with PBF i'd also like to have seen a third fight with JMM. Fight would need to be at 135 or 140. JMM can't fight at 147.

What amuses me is how the media/boxing pundits claim Pacman would easily beat Mayweather just because the opponents they've both faced - Pacman has 'beat' them more easily.

It seems they faced Mayweather at their more natural weight. It's no surprise they get thumped by Pacman after having to starve themselves to fight at the weight. Also apart from JMM, Floyd beat them first and in some cases provided the blueprint for Roach to study.

                Mayweather/Pacman's opponents fight weight...
                De La Hoya: 154 / 145
                Hatton: 145 / 140
                Mosley 147 / ???

This is a shocking fight, just setting Mosley up for the first stoppage loss of his career and he's happy with the payday.

His chin is granite but I dont think this'll be much different to the Oscar fight, a past it fighter getting walloped round the ring until its stopped by the doctor, ref or corner.

Agreed, Manny should take the Olympic style blood drug tests and get on with the Mayweather fight.
