Cyclist killed in Wallington believed to be former boxing champion Gary Mason

    9:51am Friday 7th January 2011

    By Paul Jones »

A cyclist killed after a crash involving a van in Wallington yesterday is believed to have been former boxing champ Gary Mason.

The retired fighter, 48, is understood to have been involved in the incident on Sandy Lane South, near the junction with Woodcote Road, at 6.15am.

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and bailed until March pending further enquiries.

Mason fought 38 times as a professional between 1984 and 1994, with 37 wins. His only defeat was at the hands of future world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis.

Always thought he came across as a decent bloke.

    Sad day.

No way. I only looked up his record on Wikipedia the other day. RIP.

          Awful news. RIP Gary.

I know that exact spot in Walington as well.

Apparently he was on his way to work, as a hospital porter.

Sad. Only lost one fight, to Lennox Lewis, and still had to work for a living.

IIRC he had an eye problem that always hampered his career. Seemed a decent bloke who was overshadowed by Bruno for most of his career
