Marco Simoncelli died after a shocking crash today

Marco Simoncelli was killed after being involved in a horrific crash in the MotoGP race at Sepang, Malaysia.

The Italian lost the front end of his bike on the second lap of the race and fell to his right, with the bike's wheels continuing to grip and throwing him into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.

Both riders appeared to hit Simoncelli, whose helmet came off during the incident.

The race was red flagged immediately, and cancelled a few minutes later when it emerged that Simoncelli was in a critical condition. He died soon afterwards.

Honda rider Simoncelli was in his second season in MotoGP, and established himself as a fan favourite with his flamboyant riding style.

He took his maiden podium spot in the series in the Czech Republic two months ago, and followed that up with a second place finish at the recent Australian Grand Prix.

Simoncelli's death is the second casualty in the top level of motorsport, coming just a week after British driver Dan Wheldon was killed in an IndyCar race in Las Vegas.

Wonder if Rossi will call it a day now? He has nothing to prove anymore, and to be a part, albeit accidentally, in a fellow riders death might just be the catalyst for him to retire?

I chose not to click on it, but each to their own I guess. I did watch the Indy Car one last week though (I can probably deal with crashing cars better than motorbikes though).

Was a close friend of someone I know and she is absolutely devastated. I never really followed it but R.I.P.

When I was younger I worked with a guy who was killed racing bikes... He was there at work every day and then one Monday I went in to work to be told he had died the day before racing his bike in a hill climb. Totally tragic. It was pre internet I've never posted about him but RIP Paul.
