England opener Marcus Trescothick is returning home from England's Ashes tour to Australia after suffering a recurrence of a stress-related illness.

The announcement comes just nine days before the start of the five-match series in Brisbane.

"We are naturally disappointed to lose a player of his quality from our Ashes squad," said coach Duncan Fletcher.

"Everyone in the dressing room hopes that he is able to make a full recovery and resume his cricketing career."

Trescothick played in England's opening tour games against a Prime Minister's XI in Canberra and New South Wales in Sydney, but managed only 10 runs in two innings.

And following discussions with team management and medical staff, it was agreed he should fly home as soon as possible.

Does this mean the end of his test career?

He only said the other week he was feeling much better

His form has been shocking for ages - the Aussies would have pulled him apart. Looks like it could all be over for Tresco. Quite sad really.

Sad but...

.. playing in Australia has never been his strong point so maybe it will give a youngster a chance to prove their worth.

Cookie for me:respect:

:D

I'm just really surprised, given his recent comments. He must be a bit of a mess.

Yeah he seemed to be better and up for the fight from what he'd been saying in the press. Obviously he has got to Australia and realised its too much for him - can't have any passengers on an Ashes tour.
Sad to hear it though. He was a class act on his day.

My thoughts exactly. I reckon this actually improves England's chances.

If you're not 100% mentally tough, there is no point in being in a travelling England Ashes squad. The thing is Tresco has blips like this in form and then sticks up a 150 or something. I thought he was due a big score, shame it isn't going to happen.
We're struggling now.

In the old days men didn't have this sort of illness. They had a fag and a pint and got on with it.

Can you imagine any of the old school players like your Goochs, your Gattings, your Bothams, Gowers or Lambs flying home from a tour with stress?

I bet there's a woman involved somewhere.

Could be right there all this started since he never reurned home when his father-in-law fell off a roof.

Maybe the old ball and is giving him grief.

End of test career cant be having him do this all the time. Unfortunatly for him but England will want a player that is ready and hont have these problems.

My issue is just who do the selectors call up as a replacement.

In theory Robert Key should be the man called in to the squad, however I for one to not think he is cut out for test cricket and would prefer to see Owais Shah called up instead.

They say Key has had his chance and people are calling for Joyce but he's untested in test matches but probably move collingwood up the order

He had glorious future ahead of him in the Irish team though didn't he? Threw it all away.

He'll still be able to play for Ireland.

Gavin Hamilton played a few one day games a few years back for England and he's recently went on to further glory by playing for the Scottish "test" team. :handshake:
