Other than football, do you play or watch any other sport?

I like to have a few frames of snooker, and play the odd round of golf here and there. But struggle to watch Cricket.

I have been known to watch Bowls :shake:

I usually watch whatever Australia is involved in. But obviously Football is far and away my most beloved sport (religion).

I follow the Adelaide Crows locally in AFL (Aussie Rules). It is a decent sport but then at times I hate it as the more traditional AFL fan does tend to not like Football or "Soccer" as they call it. (They call AFL "Football" down here which is ironic as the hands play a major role)

But I follow the Crows 1) because they are similar to Liverpool in terms of there standing in the game and 2) our rivals Port Power are scum and poor like Neverton and their fans are all bitter sore losers. ;)

We have a good team ethic and our coach actually reminds me a bit of Rafa. (Also helps that he used to go to school with my dad).

In terms of local Football. I support Adelaide United in our new A-league competition. We have a stupid finals series here like in America which pisses me off. Especially as we finished top after the league season but lost in the finals which didn't show that we were the most consistent side in the league. It rewards flash in the pans rather then consistency. Still our game needs interest here and if the league title had been wrapped by us with nothing to play for then the interest would of been lost. Used to play Gaelic football (which is basically Aussie rules for lunatics) and a lot of tennis, but these days a bit of snooker is about as active as I get unfortunately. Although footy will always come first I'll watch almost any sport.. I just wish they'd bring Kabaddi back onto tv, what a sport that is :D

Hey Speedy

I have never been able to understand Aussie Rules, I used to watch highlights on Transworld Sport, but I couldn't get my head round how they score, the shape of the pitch etc.

You know any good links which can talk me through it.

Has football taken off a bit more in Australia after the World Cup? From what I heard, was football the 5th most played sport in Australia.

I usually watch Tennis if Wimbeldon is on, but not an avid fan.

As for snooker, its a nice escape to have a leisurely game with a few pints. Not that I am claiming to be any good, after 3 or 4 frames, I get annoyed that I can't hit a ball straight, or judge the pace of the ball!

www.afl.com is the official site of the league. But Wiki usually knows best: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_rules_football

Basically the field is oval shaped. You get 6 points for scoring a goal (putting it through the middle) and 1 point for getting it on either side of the goal.

It isn't a patch on Football. Can be quite entertaining but most ardent AFL fans live in a dream world where AFL rules all. Their belief is that AFL is better because "Soccer" is boring as there might only be 1 or 2 goals a game.

Basically most are meatheads. :haha:

However there are those like me who appreciate each sport for what it is and have time for both. Very little for AFL in comparison to Football. I watch the Crows games and that is about it.

Bah, I forgot to mention about the real Football down here. Football has always been popular. It is infact the number 1 participant sport in Australia and there has always been mass following of European leagues here due to a lot of television coverage of it and a lot of immigrants.

Problem is, our local league was a sham and a lot of the clubs were based on ethnicity. eg. Adelaide City (Italian), Melbourne Knights (Croatian). So if you weren't either then who did you support? Not to mention the standard of the league was rubbish and a history of crowd violence flamed by ethnic groups clashing.

Now with our new Federation things are moving on. Frank Lowey and John O'Neill (organized Rugby World Cup down here) have put things together. We now have got rid of all ethnic clubs and basically started from scratch. A new professional league (A-league), 6 new clubs, 2 old clubs (Adelaide United and Perth Glory because they weren't based on ethnicity and represent each city).

So now we have a vibrant 8 team competition with plans to expand to 12 as the years go by. We got record crowd numbers in season 1 and the quality of Football went up a lot with more professionalism brought in. (Yorke is also at Sydney FC and has helped in terms of marketing the league). Grand Final had 40,000 people and the atmosphere was incredible. A few Englishmen who were on holiday and went to it commented that they thought they were back in England.

The country got right behind the national side at the World Cup. I have never seen Football in the media like it was for the WC. Even non-Football people got right into it and a lot of meathead AFL fans were left with some warm humble pie.

The A-league hopes to exploit the success of the national side in the WC and already season 2 promises to be bigger and better then season 1. We've got some great new imports to the league and a lot of clubs have sold more season tickets for this season then they did for last season.

Our local league was also never shown on TV as no one wanted the rights. But Fox Sports had them last season and bought them for an extra 7 years this year and will broadcast every game live.

Our move into Asia was a big boost. Probably more important then our success at the WC. More competitive games for the national side and A-league clubs also in the Asian Champions League.

All in all, now that I have finished my rambling, I can say that Football is very much on the up in Australia.

As my username gives a reasonable hint as to my nationality,I do enjoy watching top flight
Rugby ( Tri-nations & Super 14). Played Footie till my early 30s, but unfortunately my other
sport Water Polo doesn't get all that much media time. I'll watch a bit of Golf, but generally
only the majors.

Hey, I have an idea! Why don't England and Australia plan a joint World Cup bid? :D

I can just see it now, all the big teams have to continually travel between the two countries, while England play all their games at Wembley. That way we might have a chance of lifting the cup (again)

Not for the light hearted is it?

Especially the Helmuth and Tom Pryce ones, Helmuth was instantly decapitated when his car went under the Armco, and Tom Pryce was smashed in the face with the extinguisher the marshall was holding (the guy who's torn apart) the video isn't really clear, but both the marshall and driver were instantly killed.
However, out of all of them, the one that gets me is Roland Ratzenberger, when the car slides out into view and comes to a stop, you can just tell that he's just died :(

Overshadowed by Ayton's death wasn't it...I did feel for his family at the time what with the global mourning for Senna which went on the day after their loved one had died so tragically

Paul.S

Yeah, Ayrton was so shook by his death, that on the morning of the main race Ayrton signed up to be the head of a new body to look into the safety of F1, then got killed on that very day.

Probably wont go down too well on here but my main sport (playing that is) is rugby: love playing it, love watching it. Also do a bit of running, plus play tennis and given a chance, basketball.

Of course I love my footie too, but have touch of a rhino, but am slowly getting more and more dissillusioned with the top level(s) of the game, i.e. havent supported England since the 98 WC.

But in general I like pretty much all sports, (always get too competitive) but not so keen on cricket, snooker and lately f1.

I would watch almost any sports.
From Athletics, Formula 1, cycling (Le tour) to almost anything in the Olympics, even gymnastics, my favourite are Boxing, UFC, and football.
Irish sports can be good to watch, Gaelic Football and Hurling. Rugby can be exciting too.
Whisper it, but I have even watched cricket on the occasion if nothing else was on, but only like 30 mins of a really big game.
Have been watching baseball and ice hockey on NASN too.
world championships darts are good as is the snooker.
Love watching texas holdem comps too.

I like most sports. Especially have a soft spot for US sports.

On a sickie today. Just watched the Yankees at White Sox baseball game (go Chi Sox!).

Always liked NFL (Raiders), NHL (Canucks) and NBA (Lakers).

Love my cricket and they show the English summer Test series over here. Couldn't get a ticket to the Adelaide Ashes test for love nor money though! :sigh:

Never really followed Aussie Rules - too many scores for my liking. And you get a point if you miss!

Overall, sport = YES! LARGE AMOUNTS!:D

Play

Swimming - I representated my school at Hong Kong national championships. My personal coach (I had private lessons) was a Hong Kong representative at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. My events were long distance Breaststroke and Freestyle.

Tennis - Pretty good at this sport too. I had private coaching lessions for about six years. My strength were my forehand and volleying. My serve sucked though...

Golf - My dad is a golf fanatic and so I got sucked in as well. My dad is a four handicap while I'm still crap after all those years of private tuition...

Football - Representated my school in middle school/high school. Captained the team when I was at high school and awarded various school colors for my contribution/achievements.

Watch

Football - Liverpool. Enough said...

Tennis/Golf - A big fan of Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Tiger Woods. Like to watch them play especially during a major tournament. (Masters, Wimbledon etc)

Baseball - Four years in Chicago and another year in New York made me a semi-Baseball fan as well. Used to watch the Cubbies play at Wrigley during my Chicago uni days. I quite like the Boston Red Sox as well...
