Hodgson has asked Spain/Del Bosque to Leave Torres out of International games

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is hoping Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque agrees to his request of not calling up striker Fernando Torres for international duty.
Spain face Liechtenstein in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday before a friendly in Argentina on Wednesday.

Torres, 26, has only recently returned from a groin injury.
"We are hoping Spain will pass up on his services and give him a chance to continue his recovery and his pre-season," said Hodgson.

Torres made his first Premier League start on Sunday as he scored the winner in the 1-0 victory over West Brom.

He struggled to get into the game before netting a volley in the 65th minute to earn Liverpool their first league win this season.

Fernando is trying very hard at the moment and he is playing catch-up
    Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson
"He needs more training and needs more matches and you won't see the best of him until a little bit later down the line," added Hodgson.

"It would be very nice if Del Bosque would look kindly on him and us because there is no doubt he would prosper from two weeks of serious training. Training for, and playing, matches is not really what he requires at this moment in time.

"We also want to keep an eye on the knee which caused him so many problems last season.

"We've spoken to the Spanish national team and I'm due to speak to someone later Sunday evening but we can only propose for the player himself this is the best option."

Hodgson said after the game that he was in the market for another striker to partner Torres but hoped the manner of the goal would provide the Spaniard with a boost.

"It was a hard-fought game, especially the first half when we weren't firing on all cylinders and they were playing well and causing us problems," said Hodgson.

"I thought we got better as the game went on and we got the points thanks to a world-class strike.
"It was an excellent piece of play, starting with Pepe Reina's throw, then the build-up down the left with Dirk Kuyt and the ball played in before the volley.

"It was good goal to win the game and I thought we were going to get a second when Steven Gerrard produced a piece of magic to find Fernando at the far post but Scott Carson was equal to that.

"Fernando is trying very hard at the moment and he is playing catch-up - we've said it many times before - but I think that goal will be great for his confidence."

It's fair enough, he's been milked dry by the national team for the past 3 years, what with the euros, the confed cup and the world cup.

Their 2nd game is a friendly and the 1st is against ****ing Liechtenstein. They plainly dont NEED to call on him.

Considering how he was treated by almost 100% of spanish media, i´d prefer if he could stay with Liverpool.

Although i´d love to see him scoring also with Spain so everyone could shut up for once () i can wait til he´s totally recovered. There´s no need to have Torres playing, anyway, like its been said in this thread (Liechtenstein and a friendly match)

I wonder how much Torres feels he's won everything at international level and feels like semi retiring for a few years to concentrate on club competitions (whether with us or someone else)? I know I would, but I'm 38 and have more life experience on my side.
            One tit for another.

It's worth asking I guess, I'm not sure what the response will be though!

Why have another international break such a short time into the season, especially after the world cup, we've barely seen some of our players so far because they are still recovering from the World Cup.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Slightly off topic but since you opened the door...

That we have had two international breaks in the first three weeks of the season is ludicrous. UEFA need to revise their qualifying format to introduce tiers. Let the mickey mouse nations playoff first, and then make x groups of 4 teams from the top ranked nations and the qualifiers. 6 games to qualify is plenty. The groups could be expanded to 5 for WC qualifiers because of the difference in the number of places at the finals. I believe Africa and Asia do something like this to weed out the ****e and limit the number of games the top sides have to play.

Was always going to happen. If they aren't going to play him, they would still take him for the two weeks. Can't be seen bowing to club pressure.

The Spanish national team management are a bunch of short sighted ****ers.

Watch him come back crocked and exhausted. It's like that film Indecent Proposal except we dont even get the $1m to cover the insult for ****ing over our best player. Cunts.

                              disagree!

the smaller teams will never get through. and who is to say the smaller teams wont have one player playing for a big team?
