    Anderson/Carson - New contracts

    itv sport

Paul Anderson and Scott Carson signed improved contracts at Liverpool before they travelled with Rafael Benitez's first-team squad to Switzerland.

Anderson, star of Liverpool's FA Youth Cup-winning side last season, has penned a new four-year deal while Carson - England's third goalkeeper in their World Cup squad - has agreed a five-year deal.

Winger Anderson, who celebrated his 18th birthday on Sunday, has figured in both of Liverpool's first-team friendlies this season.

He only joined Liverpool from Hull in January in a swap deal with John Welsh after a successful trial period. The youngster was released by West Brom when Adrian Boothroyd - now Watford boss - was in charge of the Baggies' youngsters.

But Benitez recognised Anderson's potential and saw him score a fine goal in the friendly at Wrexham earlier in the month. Anderson has signed what is effectively a three year extension to his current deal.

Carson is likely to be Liverpool's second-choice goalkeeper next season after he signed his new contract.

The 20-year-old had a spell last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, who have been trying to extend that deal this summer.

Portsmouth have also been trying to sign Carson on a season-long loan, but with the prospect of Jerzy Dudek being used in a possible transfer swap shortly, the opportunity is there for Carson to assume the role as Jose Reina's understudy.

    This is good news.
Two players brought in for next to nothing, on long term contracts.

      Great news!

Was a bit worried how Carson saw his future at the club with such a limited opportunities to play 1st team football.

Hoping that Anderson can challenge for the RM spot in a year or two.

would it be worth Rafa handing Anderson the chance this season for RW?
Look at Lennon, Jol trusted him gave him a chance and the rest is history.

Jol had the advantage of Lennon having already played first team football at Leeds to help him make the judgement. I think Anderson looks like he is a bit light weight at the minute (although much the same was said - and was true - about Beckham and he still made a contribution at Man Utd before he finally bulked out and became the player we know today).

Each young player matures at a different rate and I trust Rafa to judge it correctly. I do hope however that we get to see at least a few appearances from him this season.

This must surely mean that Dudek will be off soon?

Hopefully the dude leaves so we can get his high wages of the books
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06
