Liverpool FC's Ian Ayre labels Wigan owner Dave Whelan 'a comedian'

Brilliant pic of shanks and the boys ....

Liverpool FC's managing director Ian Ayre has criticised Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, labelling him "the biggest comedian" in the north west of England.

Ian Ayre claimed Wigan owner Dave Whelan conducted a "sideshow" during Liverpool FC's recent search for a new manager.

Whelan gave his manager Roberto Martinez permission to speak to Liverpool FC about the Anfield vacancy and then appeared to be speaking to the media every day to give updates.

Swansea’s Brendan Rodgers was eventually appointed on Friday, after the manager, Liverpool and the Swans concluded negotiations in less than four days in a much more private affair.

Ian Ayre said: "Our aim from the outset was to conduct a proper, thorough, search and do it in the proper manner.

"From our point of view, we did all the right things. We approached the clubs we needed to approach, and conducted ourselves properly at all times.

"It is disappointing, then, that Dave Whelan felt the need to run the kind of sideshow he conducted via Sky Sports News and various other media outlets.

"To be honest, I always thought John Bishop was the biggest comedian in the north west but Dave Whelan seems to have taken that mantle over the last couple of weeks."

At one stage last week, Dave Whelan claimed Roberto Martinez had been made an offer by Liverpool FC, something Ian Ayre denies.

"That is patently not true," he said.

"We make no secret of the fact we spoke with Roberto Martinez, but that is all we did.

"He is a great guy, and I can’t speak highly enough of his professionalism and conduct.

"But for his chairman to make suggestions like he has, and suggestions that just aren’t true, well it is disappointing to say the least.

"We can say with absolute certainty that the only person who was made any offer by Liverpool Football Club is Brendan Rodgers."

Dave Whelan was unavailable for comment when Press Association Sport attempted to contact him.

Wigan Athletic also declined to comment on Ian Ayre’s views.

Dumb for Ayre to say this... we have the man we want, move on. Looks small time to comment on it. Need PR people to know the game and play it.

What is the point of making comments like this in public? Even if he's right here.

Agreed, the comment about Whelan in the media was enough, the John Bishop gag was cringeworthy.

Whelan didn't want to lose his manager, I think he was deliberately trying to make things more difficult for Martinez. It worked.

then he shouldn't have allowed him permission to hold talks and collect free air miles.....should have made it clear i want you to remain as our manager not see if he can get a sweeter deal elsewhere.

There are ways of saying such things and Ayre's attempt is way off.
                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

That's unrealistic though. We don't know anything about the selection process (other than Whelan's comments!), but if it was a close call between Martinez and Rodgers then I'm sure the Wigan owner's running commentary didn't help Martinez. I think we've got the right man, but I'd have been happy with Martinez too. I think he'll move to a bigger club in the next couple of years and prove himself to be an excellent manager. I don't like Whelan, but he's done a great job at Wigan.

This comment in particular lacks professionalism.

"To be honest, I always thought John Bishop was the biggest comedian in the north west but Dave Whelan seems to have taken that mantle over the last couple of weeks."

If you are trying to make a serious point, make your point. Don't dilute it by making jokes. These are not the words of the MD of a professional company, I don't really think Ayre needed to say anything at all. It was very apparent what Dave Whelan was up to. Our PR is as always abject and lacks professionalism and direction.

tis a little scary that ayre thinks he is a geezer, and he is our MD

sooner he is binned the better.
