The tactic of playing a sweeper in front of the defence is certainly not a recent invention. I seem to recall an analysis of Dunga's role in '94 where it was suggested he held when Brazil attacked, providing a shield or cover for the centre backs while the two full backs went forward. If the opposition broke centrally then he went to close down the attack - if the opposition broke on one flank then he would drop into defence and allow a centre back to go wide.

I think a bit of a myth has built up about Makalele because he emerged during the Sky era and they base their whole approach to covering sport on individuals.

    Although it's 'Makelele'

I agree although I do sometimes wonder if this whole Makelele myth is a complete fib. I remember the likes of Peter Reid, David Batty and stacks of others who rarely ventured forward. Back then they were usually described as 'ball-winners' or 'enforcers', and they were - I just struggle to recall them doing anything other than winning the ball and making a simple pass. These days you seldom hear of 'ball-winners' - just 'holding' or 'sitting' midfielders.

Or of course someone "in the Makelele role"

One of the most misspelled names in football I reckon. I wonder why.

Sky are so crap - they pollute perceptions of the past.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
