tbe danger for us is that he tries not to get injured.....especially if he is still looking for a club in Feb / Mar

Glen Johnson may leave Liverpool after contract talks reach deadlock
      • 30-year-old looking for a longer-term deal at the club
      • Defender free to speak to foreign teams in January

Glen Johnson has indicated he is approaching the end of his Liverpool career having admitted that talks on a contract extension at Anfield have fallen “very quiet”.

The 30-year-old will become a free agent next summer and is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from 1 January, having so far resisted the offer of a 12-month extension to his £120,000-a-week deal from Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group.

Liverpool’s offer arrived earlier this year but remains unsigned, with Johnson seeking a longer-term contract. The Anfield club secured fellow England international Daniel Sturridge on a new five-year deal last week and have opened negotiations with Raheem Sterling’s representatives over an enhanced and extended contract for the talented 19-year-old.

Asked for an update on his contract situation, Johnson replied it was: “very quiet”. He added: “I am just concentrating week by week and not thinking about it. Of course I want to stay but, like I say, I worry about this week, this week, and then next week, next week. That is how I live my life.”

Johnson returned from a six-week injury lay-off in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and admitted he was disappointed not to have recovered ahead of England’s squad announcement for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

“I would have preferred the international break to have come next week so I could declare myself fit and available,” he said. “Obviously with the squad being picked last Thursday I haven’t played for six weeks so I can’t be involved. I want to go away with the England team and play again for them as well.”

I smell bull****, because I think his application and form over the last year has been impacted because of this.

Looking at his performances during last season he should be more than happy to get 120,000 a week!! Greed...

I'd be amazed if another club offered him £120k a week. If I were Glen and we were offering a 12-month extension on his current terms I'd be snapping their hand off.

He'll end up at QPR with Arry and will help drive them into the ground.

What will become of their current coach driver?

He'll end up moving to Arry's next club for a ridiculous fee on ridiculous wages. At which point Arry will complain that he's currently working with the worst bunch of players and drivers he's ever had, before buying more.

There is no way he's worth 120.000 on current form but we'll need to shell out for his replacement as well, so IF gets his **** together I'd consider a longer extension.

Yep wages are not always based on form etc. If it prevents him leaving on a free and getting a fee for him it might be worth signing him up again. Bigger picture and all that.

Case by case basis though, and with Johnson we might actually be best off just letting him go on a free instead of being lumbered with a player we can't sell as his wages are too high?

That's probably why we're offering 12 months. He'll be off next summer but he'll never get these figures elsewhere, except QPR maybe. He'll be playing somewhere for 80.000 a week IMO.

We have Flanno and Manquillo who can play this position so already have paid out

While they are both solid defensively, neither of them offer the same attacking threat as Johnson. Possibly Manquillo in a few years but not at the moment. I think we will buy another right back if Johnson leaves.

Players need game time if they are to improve and the amount we have spent I would prefer that we let him progress. I don't feel we can afford to splash out anymore on this position.
