Accrington chief executive Rob Heys told BBC Sport: "It was a three-way collision between Tom, Ian Dunbavin and the Tranmere player.
"It's difficult at this time to say what the injury is but our club doctor and physio ran immediatly to his assistance.
"Both sets of players were shaken up by the incident hence why we took the decision to call the game off - it's only natural reaction when you see a player stay down for so long.
"He was starting to show signs of coming around as he left the ground."

The radio stations I work for have an excellent relationship with Stanley and their chairman Rob Heys, he even made tea for us all after losing a bet. Tom is a top lad and I pray he's ok. I'm trying to find out if any of our news team know anything or if my mate at the club knows owt. Just hope he's ok. 18 is no age for this kind of thing to happen
Accrington’s game with Tranmere was abandoned after a horrific collision left Stanley’s Tom Bender on the ground for 25 minutes last night.
Welsh under-21 international Bender was caught in the middle of a three-player collision where he was hit by his own keeper Ian Dunbavin and Tranmere striker Lucas Akin after 38 minutes.
Bender was left out cold with a neck injury and as concern grew, the match was suspended, with the crowd, including Liverpool star Steven Gerrard, realising something was wrong.
Bender finally regained consciousness but Dunbavin was so upset at the scene he had accidentally caused, that he couldn’t play on and the players decided to accept the referee’s offer to abandon the game.

“He was unconscious for quite some time but came round before he left. He has been taken to the local hospital as a precaution.”
Bender is on a season-long loan deal from Colchester.
