We were interested in taking him back after his season at Real. They wanted £15m+ (or something) and we were only willing to pay Madrid the £8m that they paid us.

IIRC, Rafa spoke with Owen and told him to force a move to LFC only and to run some time down towards the end of the window to give us a stronger hand in signing him. Owen pooped it, signed for Newcastle and that was that.
